Common ivy (Hedera helix subsp. helix) is a well-known native and ornamental plant in Europe. Reports on contact dermatitis from ivy have regularly appeared since 1899. Recently, it has been suggested that allergic contact dermatitis from the plant may be under-diagnosed, partly due to lack of commercial patch test allergens. The objective of the article is to present the results of aimed patch testing with the main common ivy allergen, falcarinol, during a 16-year period and review the newer literature. Consecutive patients tested with falcarinol 0.03% petrolatum from May 1993 to May 2009 wer

Experimental and chemical investigations revealed that common ivy (Hedera helix susp. helix) contains 3 compounds which are powerful irritants and moderate sensitizers. Only 2 of these constituents, falcarinol and didehydrofalcarinol, are present in the plant during the whole year. Besides Panax ginseng and Schefflera arboricola, this is the third species of the Araliaceae in which these polyacetylenic sensitizers have been found. Falcarinol and didehydrofalcarinol also occur in Hedera helix subsp. canariensis. 4 patients have been patch tested. Even in low concentrations (0.03%), the main all

Reference gene evaluation and selection are necessary steps in gene expression analysis, especially in new plant varieties, through reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). Hedera helix L. is an important traditional medicinal plant recorded in European Pharmacopoeia. Research on gene expression in H. helix has not been widely explored, and no RT-qPCR studies have been reported. Thus, it is important and necessary to identify and validate suitable reference genes to for normalizing RT-qPCR results. In our study, 14 candidate protein-coding reference genes were selected. Thei

Candida is an opportunistic pathogen and a common cause of fungal infections worldwide. Anti-fungal use against Candida infections has resulted in the appearance of resistant strains. The limited choice of anti-fungal therapy means alternative strategies are needed to control fungal infectious diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibition of Candida biofilm formation by Hedera rhombea (Korean name: songak) extract. Biofilm formation was assessed using the crystal violet assay which showed a dose dependent reduction in the presence of extract with the biofilm formation inhibito

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is common and endemic in many areas of Iran, caused by species of a protozoan parasite belonging to the genus Leishmania. There is not any effective vaccine against leishmaniasis; so, therapy is important for prevention and separation of disease. Herbal extract for treatment of CL is cost-effective, applicable topically to lesions, and can avoid the development of drug resistance.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vivo activity of an alcoholic extract of Hedera helix (a native Iranian plant) on the experimental ulcer of zoonotic

The genus Hedera L. has long been recognized as a valuable source of anticancer agents, such as triterpenoid saponins. In contrast, Hedera pastuchovii Woronow remains largely unexplored. This study investigates the cytotoxic profiles and genoprotective potential of H. pastuchovii leaf extracts. Leaves were extracted with ethanol and fractionated into n-hexane (Hex-F), ethyl acetate (Eth-F), and methanolic (Met-F) fractions using vacuum liquid chromatography. Phenolic, flavonoid, and saponin contents were quantified. Cytotoxicity was evaluated against four human cancer cell lines: A549 (lung),

INTRODUCTION: Acute bronchitis is defined as a sudden inflammation of the bronchial tubes in the lung mainly caused by viral infection. It is characterized by a persistent cough which can be productive or dry. It is the most common disease in industrialized countries, and thus herbal expectorants enjoy a high popularity in many European countries due to their favorable risk-benefit ratio.
OBJECTIVE: The present noninterventional study was intended to gain further data on the application of a cough syrup containing ivy leaf extract EA 575® by evaluating its efficacy and safety in children and

Infection with Fasciola hepatica (liver flukes) causes fascioliasis in humans and fasciolosis in ruminants. The current strategy for controlling fascioliasis/fasciolosis is predominantly mediated by chemotherapy with triclabendazole (TCBZ). As this flukicide targets newly excysted juveniles (NEJs), immature flukes and mature liver flukes, it's use as the frontline chemotherapy for over four decades has led to widespread drug resistance. New chemotherapeutics are, therefore, urgently required. Here, continuing our studies of flukicidal phytochemicals derived from Hedera helix (common ivy), we i

Hedera helix (HE) contains diverse bioactive constituents, including triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, which exhibit various pharmacological activities. In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) combined with natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) was employed to enhance the extraction efficiency and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Among the tested formulations, a ternary system composed of malonic acid (Mal), N,N'-dimethylurea (DMU), and 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BDO) achieved the highest efficiency for extracting eight target compounds from the HE leaves. In addi

Several anti-influenza drugs that reduce disease manifestation exist, and although these drugs provide clinical benefits in infected patients, their efficacy is limited by the emergence of drug-resistant influenza viruses. In the current study, we assessed the therapeutic strategy of enhancing the antiviral efficacy of an existing neuraminidase inhibitor, oseltamivir, by coadministering with the leaf extract from Hedera helix L, commonly known as ivy. Ivy extract has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antihelminthic properties. In the present study, we investigated its potential

Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is a prevalent upper airway disorder characterized by inflammation and epithelial damage due to the backflow of gastric contents. Current treatments, primarily proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), often show variable efficacy, necessitating the exploration of alternative or adjunctive therapies. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of a mixture of Hedera helix and Coptidis rhizome (HHCR) in mitigating the pathophysiological mechanisms of LPRD. Using an in vitro model of human pharyngeal epithelial cells exposed to acidic conditions, we observed th

In this postmarketing study 9657 patients (5181 children) with bronchitis (acute or chronic bronchial inflammatory disease) were treated with a syrup containing dried ivy leaf extract. After 7 days of therapy, 95% of the patients showed improvement or healing of their symptoms. The safety of the therapy was very good with an overall incidence of adverse events of 2.1% (mainly gastrointestinal disorders with 1.5%). In those patients who got concomitant medication as well, it could be shown that the additional application of antibiotics had no benefit respective to efficacy but did increase the

Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced bacterial keratitis is one of the most sight-threatening corneal infections associated with intense ocular inflammatory reactions that may lead to vision loss. Hence, this study investigated the efficacy of three nanocomposite chitosan-coated penetration enhancer vesicles (PEVs) to augment the ocular delivery of saponin(s), α-hederin (PEVI), hederacoside C (PEVII), or both (PEVIII) for treatment of Pseudomonas keratitis and its induced inflammatory response. The three formulations were prepared using the ethanol injection method and comprehensively characterized.

Hedera helix L. is among the most popular over-the-counter formulations for effectively alleviating respiratory disorders in adults & children due to its unique active constituents such as α - Hederin & Hederacoside C. Even though its respiratory pharmacological activity is thoroughly researched, its other pharmacological activities remain relatively unexplored. Alcoholism is a Western cultural habit that is associated with various side effects, including peptic ulcer disease (PUD) & drug interaction. The PUD is commonly & recurrently presented clinically, increasing the load on healthcare sys

Ivy leaves (Hedera helix) is a traditional plant used for common cold, cough, and bronchial disorders and can be used for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as an attempt in alternative medicine. RA is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by its increasing frequency and adverse consequences. There is an urgent need for a long-term therapy that has favorable biological effects and is less expensive than the already authorized synthetic medicines. This study aimed to determine the anti-arthritic potentials of Hedera helix with determination of the bioactive fraction and discovery of its second-gene
