Helium is nontoxic at standard conditions, plays no biological role, and is found in trace amounts in human blood. Helium can be dangerous if inhaled to excess, since it is a simple tissue hypoxia and so displaces the oxygen needed for normal respiration. This report presents a fatal case of a middle-aged male victim who died from self-administered helium exposure. Melanoma involving the ciliary body is a rare tumor which carries a poor prognosis when compared to all uveal melanoma. We have treated 54 patients with ciliary body melanoma using helium ions from 1978 to 1985. Because of the high rate of metastatic disease, the 5-year disease specific survival rate is only 59% despite a 5-year local control rate of 98%. The greatest diameter of the tumor was predictive of loss of vision and enucleation (p = .05, p = .04, respectively). To evaluate the neuromuscular response to resistive unloading, we compared the ventilatory and occlusion pressure (P100) response of normal subjects breathing 20.9% O2 in helium (He-O2) with their response to unloading produced by inhaled atropine sulfate. Four patients in status asthmaticus and with alveolar hypoventilation were given a helium-oxygen (He-O2) mixture to breathe during 4 hours. Clinical improvement and return to normal of arterial blood gas levels were rapid and dramatic in all patients. The He-O2 mixture, which is a low density gas, causes a reduction in pulmonary resistance and an improvement in overall alveolar ventilation.

We report the formation of fcc and distorted hcp iron-helium compounds with x in FeHe_{x} up to 0.13 and 0.48, respectively, based on experiments at 5-54 GPa and ∼1000-2820 K. Upon releasing pressure under room temperature, these fcc and distorted hcp FeHe_{x} were still observed by XRD and SIMS measurements.
