Self-compassion buffers the impact of learned helplessness on adverse mental health during COVID-19 lockdown.

BACKGROUND: Learned helplessness may be the underlying cause of poor mental health status among college students during the COVID-19 lockdown, and self-compassion as a positive psychological quality may influence the link between learned helplessness and mental health. METHODS: A sample of 869 Chinese college students (443 male and 426 female), with a mean age of 20.03 (SD = 1.68), completed the Learned Helplessness Scale (LHS), Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), and DASS-21. The moderating effect of self-compassion on the relationship between learned helplessness and anxiety, depression, and stres

A potential candidate for prevention of PTSD: Prazosin prevents learned helplessness behavior in adult male rats.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder that arises following exposure to an extreme stress. PTSD is characterized by five primary trauma-related symptom clusters, including symptoms of negative mood and hyperresponsivity to the traumatic event. Regrettably, the current therapy options are not highly effective. Therefore, prevention of PTSD is crucial and potentially applicable. Prazosin is an anti-adrenergic medication that is used to reduce nightmares in patient with PTSD, and can also mitigate the noradrenergic dysfunction caused by trauma. Here we show

Propofol Alleviates Depression-Like Behavior and Cognitive Disorder in Learned Helplessness Model Mice via Regulating Synaptic Function.

Propofol, an anesthetic known for its safety, efficacy and neuroprotective properties, has potential novel antidepressant effects. However, its specific mechanisms still require further elucidation. Presently, we established a learned helplessness (LH) depression model to investigate the effects of propofol treatment on depression-like impairment. Thirty adult male C57BL/6j mice were randomly divided into three groups: control group (CON), model group (LH), and propofol group (PRO), with 10 mice per group. Behavioral analyses were conducted using weight measurement, sucrose preference test (SP

Latent Profile Analysis and Influencing Factors of Learned Helplessness in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross-sectional Study.

PURPOSE: Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients frequently experience psychological distress, including learned helplessness (LH), which impairs self-management and adversely affects health-related quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the latent profiles of LH among MHD patients and to identify the biopsychosocial determinants influencing these profiles. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in five hospitals in Guangdong, China, from May to July 2024, enrolling 548 MHD patients. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was applied to classify patients into distinct LH subgroups. C

Creatine transporter knockout mice (Slc6a8) show increases in serotonin-related proteins and are resilient to learned helplessness.

Approximately 20% of adults in the U.S. will experience an affective disorder during their life. While it is well established that serotonin (5-HT) is a crucial factor in mood, impaired cellular bioenergetics are also implicated. Creatine (Cr), through the Cr/Phospho-Cr (PCr) shuttle, maintains high ATP concentrations in the neuron. This system may be implicated in the etiology of affective disorders, as reduced Cr, PCr, and ATP are often seen in the brains of affected patients. To address this issue, Cr transporter (Crt) deficient male mice (Slc6a8-/y) and female mice heterozygous for Crt exp

Vicarious learned helplessness: a translationally relevant novel model of stress contagion elucidating sex-dependent prefrontal cortex pathology.

INTRODUCTION: Vicarious trauma, the psychological distress from witnessing others' suffering, is an increasingly recognized precursor to depression and anxiety. However, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain poorly understood and appear to be sex-dependent. This study investigated the behavioral, physiological, and molecular consequences of purely psychological stress using a novel rodent model of vicarious learned helplessness (VLH). METHODS: Male and female C57BL/6J mice were used to establish VLH paradigm. Observer mice witnessed conspecifics receiving inescapable foot shocks th

Assessment of Susceptibility of Outbred Albino Rats to the Formation of Depression-Like State of Learned Helplessness.

Learned helplessness (a model of depression-like state) was developed in rats by exposure to repeated inescapable electric stimulation and evaluated by the absence of attempts to escape when it could be performed. In randomly grouped outbred white rats, 37.5% animals after the above procedure meet the criterion of learned helplessness. On experimental day 14, the latent period and the number of applied electric shocks prior to the first escape to the safe compartment in rats with learned helplessness were significantly higher than in the control, but no significant differences in these paramet

Consequences of Learned Helplessness and Recognition of the State of Cognitive Exhaustion in Persons with Mild Intellectual Disability.

Persons with intellectual disability are a group at risk of being exposed to overly demanding problem-solving situations, which may produce learned helplessness. The research was based on the informational model of learned helplessness. The consequences of exposure to an unsolvable task and the ability to recognize the symptoms of cognitive exhaustion were tested in 120 students with mild intellectual disability. After the exposure to the unsolvable task, persons in the experimental group obtained lower results than the control group in the escape/avoidance learning task, but a similar result

Vicarious Acquisition of Learned Helplessness During the COVID-19 Campus Epidemics in China: Interactions Between Embodied and Mediated Experiences.

Numerous universities nationwide announced urgent implementation of closed campus management due to the epidemics of COVID-19 in Chinese universities since March 2022, and a large number of students were under quarantine. This study aims to explore how embodied experiences (i.e., centralized quarantine and self-quarantine) and mediated experiences (i.e., exposure to media sources, pandemic information overload, and online help seeking) influence the acquisition of learned helplessness during the campus epidemics among the Chinese university students, besides, how do these two types of experien

Maternal postpartum learned helplessness (LH) affects maternal care by dams and responses to the LH test in adolescent offspring.

It is known that the early environment affects the mental development of rodent and human offspring. However, it is not known specifically whether a postpartum depressive state influences the depressive state in offspring. Using learned helplessness (LH) in rats as an animal model of depression, we examined the influence of maternal postpartum LH on responses to the LH test of offspring. Dam rats were judged as LH or non-helpless (nLH) on postnatal days (PN) 2-3, and maternal behavior was recorded during PN2-14. On PN 45-46, offspring were subjected to the LH test. Plasma corticosterone (CORT)

Role of HPA and the HPG Axis Interaction in Testosterone-Mediated Learned Helpless Behavior.

Affective disorders show sex-specific differences in prevalence, symptoms, and complications. One hypothesis for this discrepancy is the interaction between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. The present study investigates the influence of androgen on the behavioral phenotype and explores how it interacts with HPA axis genes. Gonadectomized (GDX) and GDX rats treated with testosterone propionate (T) were tested for learned helplessness (LH) behavior and compared with tested controls (TC). Prefrontal cortex was used for analyses of HPG-

The hypothalamic orexin-medial prefrontal cortex pathway modulates susceptibility to depression in the learned helplessness paradigm in male mice.

Depression is a prevalent psychiatric disorder primarily characterized by behavioral despair and helplessness. The orexinergic system plays a crucial role in stress-induced depression; however, the precise mechanisms remain unclear. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a major target of orexinergic projections, is essential for emotional regulation. This study suggests that impaired orexinergic input to the mPFC underlies depression-like behaviors in murine models. In the learned helplessness (LH) paradigm, the majority of male mice subjected to inescapable foot shocks developed depression-lik

Curculigoside facilitates fear extinction and prevents depression-like behaviors in a mouse learned helplessness model through increasing hippocampal BDNF.

Curculigoside (CUR) is the main active component of traditional Chinese medicine Curculigoorchioides Gaertn (Xianmao in Chinese), which exhibits a variety of pharmacological activities. In this study we investigated the effects of CUR on fear extinction and related depression-like behaviors in mice. In fear conditioning task, we found that administration of CUR (1.6, 8, 40 mg·kg-1·d-1, ip, for 7 days) did not affect memory consolidation, but CUR at higher doses (8, 40 mg·kg-1·d-1) significantly facilitated fear extinction, especially on D3 and D4. Moreover, CUR administration significantly ame

[Learned helplessness and depression in the aged. A study of the concept of Seligman's depression in the old age home].

Seligman's concept of "learned helplessness" is examined with a sample of rest-home residents. A semi-structured interview is used to assess attributions in the dimensions of internality, stability and generality for past, present, and future life-events. Interrelations of these attributions with depression and age-related self-esteem are investigated. According to Seligman's model elderly subjects with high scores in depression and age-related self-esteem tend to attribute negative life-events as internal, stable and global. Some other assumptions of the model of "learned helplessness" could

Learned helplessness and its relevance for psychological suffering: a new perspective illustrated with attachment problems, burn-out, and fatigue complaints.

We develop a new perspective on various forms of psychological suffering - including attachment issues, burn-out, and fatigue complaints - by drawing on the construct of learned helplessness. We conceptualise learned helplessness in operant terms as the behavioural effects of a lack of reinforcement and in goal-directed terms as the dysregulation of goal-directed behaviour. Our central claim is that if one fails to reach a goal (e.g. the goal to secure a job), then not only this goal but also other related goals (e.g. the goal to maintain social relationships) may lose their motivating effects

From learned helplessness to motor recovery: integrating intensive neurorehabilitation in poststroke spastic paresis-clinical insights from over 10 years of practice.

BACKGROUND: Poststroke spastic paresis represents a dual pathology combining neurological impairment and secondary muscle contracture, often perpetuated by learned non-use. Current rehabilitation approaches frequently address these components separately, limiting functional recovery potential. METHODS: This perspective synthesizes over 10 years of clinical experience treating poststroke spastic paresis across European and sub-Saharan African settings, integrating constraint-induced movement therapy with progressive muscle-lengthening protocols. Clinical insights are drawn from over 300 patien
