Sporadic hemangioblastoma of the retroperitoneum.

Hemangioblastoma is a rare neoplasm occurred in soft tissue. Herein, we present an intriguing case of sporadic hemangioblastoma in the retroperitoneum occurring in a 59-year-old male. The tumor was characterized by an alternation of cellular and paucicellular areas surrounded by a thick fibrous capsule. The stromal cells showed a pale cytoplasm exhibiting occasional lipid droplets and hyperchromatic, irregularly nuclei. CD56, NSE, a-inhibin and S100 were positive in tumor cells. This is the third reported case of a hemangioblastoma in the retroperitoneum. Based on clinical examination, compute…

Hemangioblastoma of the filum terminale.

A 52-year-old man presented with low backache, paraesthesiae and spasticity of both lower limbs. He had urinary retention and constipation. … istency was encountered arising from the filum terminale. The tumor was excised en bloc. A sporadic hemangioblastoma arising from the filum terminale should be considered as a rare cause of back pain and sciatica. Total excision of the tumor offers cure.

Hemangioblastoma of the optic nerve.

A 43-year-old woman presented with progressive loss of vision in the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a prominently enhancing lesion of the optic nerve, thought preoperatively to represent an optic nerve meningioma or optic neuritis. Histological examination of the excised tumor showed this lesion to be hemangioblastoma. Her family history was unremarkable. However, subsequent review of the preoperative MRIs and postoperative imaging studies showed two small cerebellar lesions, probably hemangioblastomas, and renal, pancreatic, and adnexal cysts, establishing the diagnosis of…

Hemangioblastoma of the cauda equina.

A very rare hemangioblastoma of the filum terminale with sciatic pain and partial cauda syndrome in a 36-year-old man is presented. The difference between solitary hemangioblastoma, hemangioblastomatosis and von Hippel-Lindau disease is stressed. The literature is reviewed and the diagnosis of cauda equina neoplasms is discussed. Even nowadays often the final diagnosis is made late and only after operation and microscopical tissue examination.

Dural-Based Frontal Lobe Hemangioblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastomas are benign vascular neoplasms that may be associated with von Hippel-Lindau disease. They are more common in men, with a mean age of 36 years, and rarely affect the supratentorial region and, when present in this topography, do not have meningeal impairment. Diagnosis by the radiologic and histopathologic study is difficult, since they are rare and, therefore, forgotten diagnosis, besides they are differential diagnoses with other supratentorial neoplasms. CASE DESCRIPTION: The present report describes a case of a frontal hemangioblastoma in a 64-year-old woman w…

Parasagittal leptomeningeal hemangioblastoma--case report.

A 50-year-old male patient presented with a rare dural supratentorial hemangioblastoma manifesting as severe headache persisting for 2 months. Neuroimaging revealed a tumoral mass localized in the right parietal lobe near the sagittal sinus. The tumor was totally excised successfully. The postoperative histological diagnosis was hemangioblastoma. Such supratentorial hemangioblastomas can easily be removed because of the arachnoid cleavage plane.

Hemangioblastoma during pregnancy. Case report.

A 20-year-old pregnant woman (8th month of gestation) developed signs of intracranial hypertension and coordination disorders. The CT examination demonstrated hydrocephalus, occlusion of the IV ventricle and hyperdense mass lesion in the right cerebellar hemisphere. Following ventricular drainage cesarean section was performed and then total removal of cerebellar hemangioblastoma, which resulted in rapid and complete reversal of neurological abnormalities of the mother and the child.

Computed tomography in supratentorial hemangioblastoma.

Supratentorial hemangioblastomas are rare. A 28-yr-old man with a solid tumor in the left temporal region is described. There was neither meningeal connection nor associated polycythemia or Von Hippel-Lindau disease. Contrast enhanced computerized tomography showed a hyperdense, homogeneous lesion and cerebral angiography demonstrated a nodular tumor blush. The microscopic appearance of the lesion is described with a review of previously reported cases.

Hemangioblastoma of the optic nerve.

Optic nerve hemangioblastoma is a rare tumor that is usually unilateral and most commonly occurs in the context of von Hippel-Lindau disease. Differential diagnosis is based on clinical history and imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging with gadolinium enhancement is the most useful imaging modality as it can reveal flow voids and an absence of dural attachment, differentiating optic nerve hemangioblastoma from other more commonly encountered optic nerve tumors. Optic nerve hemangioblastoma are usually well-circumscribed vascular lesions composed of stromal cells and vascular endothelial cells. T…

Hemangioblastomas and neurogenic polyglobulia.

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic polyglobulia occurs with central nervous system hemangioblastomas. Among the suggested mechanisms are extramedullary hematopoiesis in the tumor tissue and germline mutations of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and driving mechanisms of polyglobulia in central nervous system hemangioblastomas. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of pre- and postoperative (at 3 and 12 months) hemoglobin levels in a consecutive series of patients with hemangioblastomas operated on in our institution from 1996 to 2009. We p…

Supratentorial intraventricular hemangioblastomas.

A 33-year-old male presented with a headache. He had a history of a previous surgical procedure for excisions of cervical spine hemangioblastomas 13 years prior He had a family history of von-Hippel Lindau (VHL) disease, and a VHL mutation was identified. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed enhanced mass lesions in both the third and right lateral ventricles as well as in the cerebellum. The lesion in the right lateral ventricle also had a cystic component. Two-staged resections of the tumors in the third and right lateral ventricles and ventriculo-peritoneal shunt were performed. A histop…

Hemangioblastoma of the third ventricle.

A third ventricle tumor, in addition to a recurrent cerebellar hemangioblastoma, was found in a 47-year-old woman on follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 5 years after operation of the cerebellar tumor. On MRI, the tumor was hypo- to isointense on T1-weighted images and hyperintense on T2-weighted images compared with the normal gray matter, and was strongly enhanced with gadolinium. The tumor was first treated with fractionated conventional external-beam radiation (5120 cGy in 16 fractions over a 4-week period), resulting in a slight decrease in size of the tumor. For a definite diagnos…

[A case of hemangioblastoma in the thalamus].

Supratentorial hemangioblastoma is encountered very rarely. About 80 cases in all have been reported. The authors present a case of supratentorial hemangioblastoma in the thalamus with gradually enlarging cysts. The patient was a 45-year-old man with complaints of left hemiparesis and headache. Computed tomographic scans of the brain showed a cystic mass with mural nodule in the right thalamus. Left vertebral angiography demonstrated a vascular tumor fed by a thalamogeniculate artery. A right temporo-parietal craniotomy was performed and the tumor was totally resected through the transcortical…

[Hemangioblastoma of the cauda equina].

Hemangioblastomas are dysontogenetic tumors of the central nervous system. They occur as single tumors or multiple. Hereditary and sporadic cases are known. The most frequent localisations are the retina and cerebellum but they can be localized at any site of the neuraxis. In a 37 year old male patient a solitary hemangioblastoma of the cauda equina was demonstrated by myelography and totally removed by laminectomy. In the literature 17 cases of isolated hemangioblastomas of the cauda equina are described. A further 16 cases of were observed within a Lindau-complex, 10 of which remained withou…

[Stereotactic radiotherapy of spinal hemangioblastoma].

Hemangioblastoma (HAB) is a benign, richly vascularized tumor that accounts for 2-6% of all spinal cord neoplasms and ranks third in the structure of intramedullary space-occupying lesions of the spinal cord. Hemangioblastoma may occur sporadically or, in approximately 30% of cases, as part of the clinical picture of a hereditary disease, von Hippel-Lindau disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of stereotactic irradiation of hemangioblastomas of the spinal localization in patients with sporadic and von Hippel-Lindau-associated hemangioblastomas The results of st…
