An unusual case of malignant intracranial meningioma is presented. The operative management was complicated by the abrupt development of fulminant brain edema and herniation. The tumor contained areas of extramedullary hematopoiesis, a finding not previously reported. Various pathogenetic mechanisms involved in intradural extramedullary hematopoiesis are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a response of the organism to a deficient production of blood-forming cells within the bone marrow. It may coincide with some hematologic diseases. Two patients with paravertebral mass lesions representing extramedullary hematopoiesis are discussed. Characteristic findings of extramedullary hematopoiesis are presented along with a review of the literature on this topic.
CASE REPORTS: A 76-year-old male with a known myelodysplastic syndrome presented with pneumonia. In addition, he had symptoms of a cauda equina syndrome with complaints of pain and h

Intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare finding seen in some cases of chronic hemolytic anemia. A case of a 56-year-old man with congenital spherocytosis and characteristic lobulated masses in the posterior mediastinum, considered to be ectopic hematopoietic tissue, is reported. Biopsy in such cases is not necessary and may be dangerous.

Thoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a rare manifestation in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasm. A 76-year-old woman with a long-standing history of polycythemia vera presented with a 2-month history of worsening dyspnea and left-sided wheezing. A chest computed tomography showed an ill-defined soft tissue mass encasing the left mainstem bronchus causing airway obstruction, associated with paratracheal and paraesophageal lymphadenopathy. Endobronchial ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of the soft tissue mass and mediastinoscopy with excisional biopsy of a paratracheal l

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary hematopoiesis is defined as the formation of blood cells outside the bone marrow. It is a common manifestation of many chronic hemolytic anemias, and typically involves the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. Only rarely is the spinal epidural space involved.
METHODS: We describe a 25-year-old male, known to have thalassemia intermedia, who presented with a 1-month history of stiffness and weakness in both lower extremities. On physical examination, he had palpable splenomegaly accompanied by spinal tenderness at the D5 level, weakness in both lower extremities, hyperac

Myeloid metaplasia involving the central nervous system is a rare occurrence most frequently found as an incidental finding at autopsy. A case is presented of a 56-year-old man with myeloid metaplasia and myelofibrosis, who developed diabetes insipidus. Postmortem examination revealed posterior pituitary involvement by extramedullary hematopoiesis with fibrosis and gliosis. Diabetes insipidus caused by extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare event and is thus noteworthy.

The coexistence of extramedullary hematopoiesis and extramedullary multiple myeloma can occur and present as painful pelvic masses. In such a case, normal hematopoietic cells may outnumber clonal plasma cells, posing a diagnostic challenge.

BACKGROUND: Under certain clinical and experimental conditions hematopoiesis occurs in other site than bone marrow (BM), such as the liver. Here, we develop a 3D organoid that mimics several components of the hematopoietic niche present during liver extramedullary hematopoiesis.
AIM: To evaluate the capacity of a 3D hematopoietic organoid (3D-HO) to function as a hematopoietic like-niche allowing for blood cell production outside of the BM.
METHODS: The 3D-HO is constituted by liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC) as the stromal component, BM isolated from 5-FU treated mice (FU-BMCs), co

PURPOSE: To report the imaging appearances of mass-like extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH), to identify those features that are sufficiently characteristic to allow a confident diagnosis, and to recognize the clinical conditions associated with EMH and the relative incidence of mass-like disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified 44 patients with EMH; 12 of which (27%) had focal mass-like lesions and formed the study group. The study group consisted of 6 male and 6 female subjects with a mean age of 58 years (range 13-80 years). All 12 patients underwent CT imaging and 3 of

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a common inherited hemolytic anemia due to red cell membrane defects. Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a compensatory response to insufficient bone marrow blood cell production. The preferred sites of extramedullary hematopoietic involvement are the spleen, liver and lymph nodes; but in HS, the posterior paravertebral mediastinum is also commonly involved. We report a case of a 50-year-old male who presented to us in respiratory distress and with bilateral paravertebral posterior mediastinal masses, which on trucut biopsy were found to be extra-hematopoietic mas

Extramedullary hematopoiesis often occurs in hemoglobinopathies, hemolytic anemias, leukemias, lymphomas, and myeloproliferative disorders. Liver, spleen, and lymph nodes are frequently involved. However, extramedullary hematopoiesis may also develop in other sites such as thymus, kidney, retroperitoneum, and paravertebral areas of the thorax. Extramedullary hematopoietic masses are often microscopic and asymptomatic, but sometimes they lead to tumor-like masses. We describe massive intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis in a 41-year-old man with compound heterozygosis for beta-thalassemia

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare condition, characterized by the appearance of hematopoietic elements outside the bone marrow. It occurs primarily in patients with chronic myeloproliferative disorder or congenital hemolytic anemia. We report on a 60-year-old man with hereditary spherocytosis who presented with an extramedullary paraspinal hematopoietic mass, splenomegaly, and bone marrow expansion in the right distal femur and proximal tibia metaphysis. The diagnosis was established after biopsy of the paravertebral mass. The patient underwent a splenectomy.

During Schistosoma mansoni infection, there is morphological evidence of involvement of various hematopoietic growth factors, which cause eosinophil, neutrophil, megakaryocytic and erythroid extramedullary foci in the liver, lymph nodes and omental and mesenteric milky spots. While the eosinophil metaplasia in the periphery of hepatic granulomas roughly reproduced the intensity of the medullary eosinopoiesis, the neutrophil metaplasia, on the contrary, was more intense during the period of neutrophil depression in the bone marrow. This fact suggests that extramedullary hematopoietic foci are l

An autopsy revealed extramedullary hematopoietic foci scattered along the thoracic vertebrae and between the ribs in a patient who died of lung cancer. One of them formed a tumor-like mass adhering to the 10th vertebra, and measured 8X6X2 cm. The cellular components included erythrocytic, granulocytic and megakaryocytic series at various stages of maturation as well as abundant iron-pigmented histiocytes. The patient also suffered from chronic hemolytic anemia and secondary hemochromatosis. The intimate relationship of the intrathoracic tumor-like masses of extramedullary hematopoietic tissue

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is the physiological process of hematopoiesis occurring outside of the bone marrow and is an extremely rare occurrence in the prostate, with only 1 previously documented report in the English literature. We present a specimen from a 56-year-old man who was found to have a palpable nodule on digital rectal examination and visible findings on ultrasound, confirmed to be extramedullary hematopoiesis on the prostate core.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare condition characterized by the formation of blood cells outside the bone marrow. It is commonly seen in patients with hematopoietic disorders or chronic anemia. Here, we report the case of a 55-year-old patient who had extramedullary hematopoiesis that manifested as an asymptomatic posterior mediastinal mass. Chest computed tomography showed a 30 × 35-mm mass located on the left side of the D11 vertebra. Laboratory investigations revealed no signs of anemia. The tumor was safely and completely removed using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Pathologic

Myeloproliferative diseases (MPD) are clonal stem cell disorders which mainly include polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and idiopathic myelofibrosis (IMF). They are characterized by leucocytosis, thrombocytosis, erythrocytosis, splenomegaly, and bone marrow hypercellularity. This might also result in extramedullary hematopoiesis. Abdominal manifestation has been recognized as a feature of these disorders. Splenomegaly and hepatomegaly are fairly common as opposed to ascites which is rare. The MPDs mainly affect the hepatic circulatory systems. The common hepatic manifesta
