Pyrocarbon shoulder hemiarthroplasty has been shown to reduce glenoid erosion that occurs with metal hemiarthroplasty and avoid the risk of glenoid loosening in total shoulder replacement. We have been using pyrocarbon hemiarthroplasty in our unit since 2014. We have developed a systematic reproducible surgical technique that reliably restores the anatomy of the proximal humerus and avoids overstuffing. Here, we describe our technique and present the results of a joint registry comparison of survivorship to the other classes of shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of complex proximal humerus fractures with hemiarthroplasty is associated with a high failure rate due to secondary displacement of the tuberosities. It was the aim of this in-vitro study to compare the mechanical stability of tuberosity reattachment obtained with the so-called "Cow-Hitch" (CH) cerclage compared with conventional tuberosity reattachment.
METHODS: A 4-part proximal humerus fracture was created in 10 fresh-frozen, human cadaveric shoulders. The greater and lesser tuberosity were reattached to the hemiarthroplasty stem with in total 4 CH Cerclages in th

There is a paucity of objective information in the literature about first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) hemiarthroplasty. The authors postulate that it is a reasonable treatment option for severe hallux rigidus in selected patients. Twenty-two elective first MTP hemiarthroplasties were performed on 20 patients that met the inclusion criteria. Pre- and postoperative evaluations were done using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) forefoot score, visual analogue scale (VAS) pain score, range of motion (ROM) measurements, and radiographs. Average ROM and dorsiflexion improved by 15

Surgical intervention for hallux rigidus could be necessitated when conservative attempts fail to alleviate pain and dysfunction. Controversy exists as to which procedure is ideal and will provide lasting relief of hallux rigidus pain. Many arguments have been made for and against hemi-implant arthroplasty. We advocate the use of a low-profile hemimetallic endoprosthesis (Metasurg(®)) and present our technique of using a reamer to sculpt the articular surface of the metatarsal head when necessary. We further advocate for minimal resection of the phalangeal base when using a low-profile device

BACKGROUND: Hemiarthroplasty is a common treatment for cuff tear arthropathy and glenohumeral arthritis associated with a massive tear of the rotator cuff; however, to our knowledge, long-term outcomes and preoperative factors affecting results have not been reported.
METHODS: Thirty-four shoulders in thirty-one patients with cuff tear arthropathy or a massive rotator cuff tear with glenohumeral arthritis underwent hemiarthroplasty at an average age of seventy-two years. Outcomes in all patients were evaluated by direct physical examination and according to the limited goals criteria of Neer

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: With the advent of angle-stable implant systems in surgical treatment of proximal humeral fractures, the number of indications to shoulder hemiarthroplasty decreased dramatically, because these modern implants provide certain fixation of osteoporotic bone fragments in elderly patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors report on their experience with shoulder replacement surgery in 29 patients, of which 26 underwent urgent surgery. The indications for acute hemiarthroplasty included humeral head fractures in which destruction of the articular surface exceeded 40 %, and f

Although bipolar hemiarthroplasty of the hip is a frequently performed procedure, little information is available about the frequency of postoperative dislocation and its treatment. For this study, 1,934 hips treated consecutively with primary bipolar hemiarthroplasty were reviewed. A postoperative dislocation developed in 29 patients (1.5%): during the first month after surgery in 24 patients and between 1 month and 5 years after surgery in five patients. Of the 29 dislocations, 25 were successfully reduced with with routine closed methods. Among these 25 hips, 13 (52%) subsequently redisloca

Purpose and aims Hip hemiarthroplasty (HHA) is a common procedure undertaken to manage intracapsular neck of femur fractures. Dislocation of HHA is one of the most dreadful complications. There is a paucity of clinical evidence to guide decision-making for managing these patients. The aim of this study was to describe the operative management and outcomes of patients with dislocated hemiarthroplasties of the hip and outline a treatment strategy for their management. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of all the patients presenting to University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, UK with

INTRODUCTION: The authors update their results of wrist hemiarthroplasty for irreparable distal radius fracture in the elderly, at a minimum of 2-year follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2011 and 2018, 25 consecutive independent elderly patients (24 female, 27 wrists) were treated with wrist hemiarthroplasty for distal radius fracture at a single institution. The average age was 77 years (range 65-88). They all were independent at home. A total of 19 wrists were treated at the acute stage, and 8 secondary procedures. The average follow-up was 32 months (range 24-44).
RESULTS: There was

AIMS: This study describes and compares the operative management and outcomes in a consecutive case series of patients with dislocated hemiarthroplasties of the hip, and compares outcomes with those of patients not sustaining a dislocation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of 3326 consecutive patients treated with hemiarthroplasty for fractured neck of femur, 46 (1.4%) sustained dislocations. Of the 46 dislocations, there were 37 female patients (80.4%) and nine male patients (19.6%) with a mean age of 83.8 years (66 to 100). Operative intervention for each, and subsequent dislocations, were recorded. T

Hemiarthroplasty of the hip is a commonly performed procedure for subcapital neck of femur fractures. Dislocation of the hemiarthroplasty is a recognised but uncommon complication. Dislocations can be complicated by the uncoupling or dissociation of the femoral head component from the femoral stem. Dissociations are rare and require open reduction. We present a case of a patient with a hip hemiarthroplasty dislocation and dissociation subsequent to a fall.

PURPOSE: Hemiarthroplasty may be considered for treatment of elbow arthritis with successful implantation requiring reproduction of native anatomy. This study identifies whether an uncemented hemiarthroplasty implant that achieves fixation with intramedullary (IM) screws can restore the valgus alignment of the distal humerus flexion-extension axis of rotation when assessed through radiographic parameters.
METHODS: We stripped six cadaveric specimens of soft tissues and obtained orthogonal radiographs to characterize native distal humerus anatomy. We implanted hemiarthroplasty components using

INTRODUCTION: There has been much debate on use of bipolar or unipolar femoral heads in hemiarthroplasty for the treatment of femoral neck fractures. The outcome of these implants should be studied in the America Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR).
METHODS: All primary femoral neck fractures treated with hemiarthroplasty between January 2012 and June 2020 were searched in the AJRR. All cause-revision of unipolar and bipolar hemiarthroplasty and reasons for revision were assessed for these patients until June of 2023.
RESULTS: There were no differences in number and reason for all cause revisi

Forty-seven bipolar hemiarthroplasties were performed from January 1985 to December 1986. Twenty-three patients (24 hips) returned for a history, physical, and repeat radiographs. Ten primary press-fit and two cemented primary bipolar hemiarthroplasties were performed. Four patients underwent cemented and eight received press-fit revision bipolar hemiarthroplasties. Fourteen patients had simultaneous cancellous, reamed femoral head autograft, or allograft acetabular bone augmentation. Omitting one patient who had replacement for Lévi's pleonosteosis, the average acetabular migration among the

We reviewed 55 patients (78 feet) who had undergone silicone hemiarthroplasty of the first metatarsophalangeal joint for hallux valgus (40) or hallux rigidus (38). At a mean period of 4.5 years (1 to 11), 56 feet had radiological evidence suggestive of silicone granulomatous disease. The frequency and severity of the changes increased with time from the operation. Histological material from three revisions confirmed the presence of silicone granulomata. We recommend that the operation of silicone hemiarthroplasty for hallux valgus and hallux rigidus be abandoned.

The case histories and radiographs of 100 patients treated with a cemented Thompson prosthesis for displaced subcapital fracture were reviewed. All had been operated on through a lateral approach to the hip joint, combined with trochanteric osteotomy. Twenty patients had an unsound trochanteric reattachment at follow-up; only six were symptomatic. There were no cases of proximal femoral fracture or perforation, and only one dislocation. Infection rate and para-articular ossification did not occur more frequently than in other series.

PURPOSE: This study identifies whether a novel hemiarthroplasty implant that achieves fixation with an intramedullary screw accurately restores native anatomy based on radiographic parameters.
METHODS: Six cadaveric specimens were stripped of soft tissue. A novel hemiarthroplasty with modular components was implanted into each cadaver. Radiographic measurements were taken to compare pre- and postimplantation anatomy.
RESULTS: The average age of the cadavers was 62.7 years. The trochlear width of the implant averaged 3.39 mm (range, 2.37-4.7 mm) smaller than the native trochlear width. The im

PURPOSE: Hemiarthroplasty of hip joint is a frequently performed procedure in geriatric patients, especially in cases of trauma. Several risk factors are associated with this surgery, including postoperative delirium, which has been linked to poorer functional recovery, longer hospital stays, and higher short- and long-term mortality rates. The present study aimed to compare the rates and risk factors of postoperative delirium and its correlation with neglected cases in geriatric patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was performed at Surabaya Orthopedic and Traumatology Ho

INTRODUCTION: Hemiarthroplasty is the recommended treatment for displaced, intracapsular, femoral neck fractures. This study aimed to evaluate the early complications following insertion of the JRI Furlong cemented hemiarthroplasty, a contemporary, modular, double tapered, polished prosthesis.
METHOD: A series of 459 consecutive patients (May 2006 - June 2009) treated with a JRI hemiarthroplasty with a minimum of one-year (1-4years) follow-up were evaluated. Data collected retrospectively from clinical records and hospital databases included patient demographics, mortality, deep infection, di
