Persistence of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus RNA.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) causes severe disease with fatalities. Awareness of potential sources of infection is important to reduce risk to healthcare workers and contacts. We detected CCHFV RNA in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from a spontaneous abortion that were submitted for histology 9 weeks after a suspected CCHFV infection in the mother.

The global distribution of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne infection caused by a virus (CCHFV) from the Bunyaviridae family. Domestic and wild vertebrates are asymptomatic reservoirs for the virus, putting animal handlers, slaughter-house workers and agricultural labourers at highest risk in endemic areas, with secondary transmission possible through contact with infected blood and other bodily fluids. Human infection is characterized by severe symptoms that often result in death. While it is known that CCHFV transmission is limited to Africa, Asia and Europe, definitive global extents

First Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever outbreak in India.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has not been reportedly previously from India. Initial clinical features of dengue fever and CCHF are similar and it is very difficult to differentiate and diagnose CCHF. Common clinical features of CCHF include; high grade fever with chills, headache, body ache, myalgia, vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness and bleeding from multiple sites. Laboratory investigations showed cytopenia, raised prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), raised creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) as well as altered liver an

Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever and diffuse alveolar haemorrhage.

Although the pathology of Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is mainly related to a haemorrhagic process with secondary cytokine storm, there have been no published reports of this fatal disease being a cause of diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (DAH). There are many aetiological factors emphasizing the direct role of endothelial injury on DAH. We present the case of a young adult Turkish man with diffuse bilateral alveolar haemorrhage without an episode of gross haemoptysis caused by the CCHF virus. Successful clinical results and a rapid clinical and radiological clearance were obtained with

The clinical pathology of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

Observations were made of 15 fatal and 35 nonfatal Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) infections diagnosed from February 1981 to March 1987 in Kimberly and Sandringham, Republic of South Africa. Following an incubation period of 2-9 days after exposure to infection, patients had a sudden onset of disease with fever, nausea, severe headache, and myalgia. Petechial rash and hemorrhagic signs such as epistaxis, hematemesis, and melena supervened on days 3-6 of illness. Deaths occurred on days 5-14 of illness. Patients with fatal infections had thrombocytopenia and markedly elevated levels of

Reverse Genetics System for Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus.

Reverse genetic systems are powerful tools in molecular virology that allow the generation of infectious recombinant virus and the manipulation of viral genomes. Reverse genetic systems enable the incorporation of reporter genes, facilitating many virological assays, including high-throughput screening. Additionally, reverse genetic systems can be used to introduce targeted mutations into the viral genome, allowing investigations of viral genetic elements and protein functions in virus pathogenesis and biology. Here we describe in detail the materials and methods required for the Crimean-Congo

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever: An emerging threat in Europe.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), caused by Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), is endemic in Africa, Asia, and Europe. However, CCHF epidemiology and epizootiology have been poorly defined in Europe. Here, we summarize the current knowledge of CCHFV distribution in (non-Russian) Europe, including countries previously not considered to be at risk. We collected data on CCHF cases, human/vertebrate animal anti-CCHFV seroprevalence, CCHFV vector (Hyalomma tick), and CCHFV isolation from ticks and classified countries into five risk levels using a One Health approach. From 1944 th

Interactome profiling of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus glycoproteins.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a biosafety level-4 pathogen requiring urgent research and development efforts. The glycoproteins of CCHFV, Gn and Gc, are considered to play multiple roles in the viral life cycle by interactions with host cells; however, these interactions remain largely unclear to date. Here, we analyzed the cellular interactomes of CCHFV glycoproteins and identified 45 host proteins as high-confidence Gn/Gc interactors. These host molecules are involved in multiple cellular biological processes potentially associated with the physiological actions of the vir

Big Epidemic of Small City: Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever.

OBJECTIVE: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is the most common tick-borne viral hemorrhagic fever in our country and the world. While investigating the etiology of fever, tick contact should be questioned, especially in rural areas, and CCHF should be remembered. This study aimed to review the characteristics of the cases detected in Bayburt, one of the cities where CCHF is endemic. METHODS: A total of 100 patients aged 16 years and older who were diagnosed with CCHF in our clinic between April 2020 and October 2022 were included in the study. Demographic, epidemiological, and clinical

A case of crimean-congo hemorrhagic Fever in oman.

In the summer of June 2011, the first case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) was observed in Oman since the last fifteen years. The first blood sample using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test were sent looking for CCHF, tick-borne encephalitis, dengue, Japanese encephalitis, Chikungunya and West Nile. All resulted as negative. The repeated serology for CCHF came strongly positive after five days from the initial negative test, and accordingly patient started on ribavirin and he responded to it. His condition improved dramatically.

Co-infection of Malaria and Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever.

Southeast of Iran is an endemic area for Malaria and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). In 1999, we faced with an outbreak of CCHF in Sistan and Baluchistan Province, in the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The most cases of Malaria in Iran are also reported from this area. This article presents a 17-year- old woman who admitted to our hospital because of acute fever, headache, epistaxis, hemorrhagic lesions on the skin and vaginal bleeding. Finally, she was recognized as a case that was co -infected with CCHF and malaria.

Evidence for recombination in Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus has attracted considerable attention recently and a number of phylogenetic studies have been published, based mostly on partial sequences of S and M RNA segments. In this study, available full-length S, M and L segment sequences of CCHF virus were checked for recombination. Similarity plots and bootscan analysis of the S segment suggested multiple recombination events between southern European, Asian and African CCHF virus strains, with additional evidence provided by phylogenetic trees, the hidden Markov model and probabilistic divergence measures

Antibodies to hemorrhagic fever viruses in domestic livestock in Niger: Rift Valley fever and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

A repository of domestic animal sera collected in Niger between 1984 and 1988 was assayed for antibody against two zoonotic hemorrhagic fever viruses known to be present in the West African Sahel. A total of 2,540 serum samples from 2,324 cattle, sheep, goats, and camels were tested by an IgG-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the 80% plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT80) for Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus antibody. Of the 2,540 sera tested for RVF-specific IgG antibody, 1,676 sera from cattle, sheep, and goats were examined for RVF-specific IgM antibody by ELISA. A

Decoding blood fatty acids in Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

INTRODUCTION: Fatty acids (FAs) are essential for cellular structure, metabolism, and inflammatory regulation. This study investigated FA profiles in Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a severe viral illness with high mortality rates, to explore their potential as disease progression and severity biomarkers. METHODS: 190 participants were included in the study, comprising 115 CCHF-positive patients, 30 CCHF-negative patients, and 45 healthy controls. FA concentrations were analyzed via gas chromatography‒mass spectrometry (GC-MS). RESULTS: Statistically significant differences in specif

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever: a growing threat to Europe.

Tick-borne infectious diseases are increasing, driven by geographic expansion of ticks. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a tick-borne virus of the family Nairoviridae that poses serious threat to public health. CCHFV can cause severe forms of hemorrhagic fever with high case fatality rates (CFR) (10-40%) and can be transmitted from human to human. Until a few years ago, no cases of CCHF had been reported in western Europe. However, high seropositivity rates in wildlife and detection of multiple strains of CCHFV in ticks in Spain suggest that CCHFV enzootic cycle has been establ
