Hepatitis C virus affects more than 180 million people worldwide and as many as 4 million people in the United States. Given that most patients are asymptomatic until late in the disease progression, diagnostic screening and evaluation should be performed in patients who display high-risk behaviors associated with acquisition of hepatitis C. Chronic hepatitis C is associated with cirrhosis, hepatic failure, and death; therefore, treatment is aimed at reducing these complications, as well as improving quality of life and minimizing adverse effects. The current standard therapy for chronic hepatitis C is peginterferon plus ribavirin and yields a sustained virological response rate of approximately 50% overall. Over the past 2-3 years, many new therapeutic agents directed at a number of different viral targets have entered into development for the treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C. Many of these agents exhibit high levels of potency against the hepatitis C virus and have a rapid onset of activity. Some agents have been abandoned because of lack of efficacy or toxicity, but many others have shown promise and are undergoing furt

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is often associated with abnormal immunological responses. We describe four patients with vasculitic neurological signs and symptoms following HCV infection. A 56-year-old woman with HCV infection developed peripheral neuropathy characterized by asymmetric distal painful hypesthesia, dysesthesia and moderate motor weakness of the lower limbs. Serological examinations revealed cryoglobulinemia and low levels of complement C4. A biopsy of the sural nerve revealed vasculitic neuropathy. HCV infection associated immunomediated vasculitis was diagnosed. While stero

Total serum cholesterol levels have been studied in 100 patients with histological diagnoses of chronic hepatitis B and 100 wit chronic Hepatitis C, all without cirrhosis, and two age- and sex-matched control groups (B and C). Mean serum cholesterol levels of the groups were compared also in relation to sex, liver function, duration of the disease, alcohol intake, mass index, liver enzymes, presence of liver steatosis and severity of the liver disease on the basis of the histological activity index. The percentages of patients with serum cholesterol level < 150 mg/dl and > 240 mg/dl were also

Evaluation of liver biopsies in hepatitis C is aimed at confirming the clinical and serologic diagnosis, grading of necroinflammatory activity, staging of consecutive fibrosis, ruling out or confirming liver diseases of different etiology, and assessment of therapeutic effects. Usually, the course of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is slow, with mild inflammatory changes. Nevertheless, even in mild asymptomatic chronic hepatitis C episodes of higher inflammatory activity associated with extensive piecemeal necrosis and porto-central bridging, necrosis can accelerate the course of the

Advances in understanding the hepatitis C virus (HCV) life cycle and the urgent need to find complementary direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies has led to substantial advancements in treating chronic hepatitis C. The introduction of telaprevir and boceprevir in 2011 increased the sustained virological response (SVR) rate from approximately 50% to > 70%, but this therapy further restricted patient eligibility and is only approved for treating HCV genotype 1 infection. Interferon has long remained the backbone of HCV therapy and helps prevent viral breakthrough. However, interferon has limite

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate impulsiveness among chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients and its association with sociodemographic, clinical and psychopathological factors.
METHOD: Ninety-one CHC individuals were enrolled in a cross-sectional study at a Brazilian public university-based outpatient's service for infectious diseases. They were assessed using the Barrat Impulsiveness Scale, Brief Fatigue Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory and Hamilton Anxiety Scale. Structured psychiatric interview was performed according to the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Multivar

Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is the major cause of chronic hepatic pathology, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. CHC affects approximately 3.2 mln Americans. The commonest routes of CHC transmission are drug injections, blood transfusion, and sexual contacts (in this order). CHC is frequently an asymptomatic infection. Jaundice occurs only in one third of the cases with acute infection. Cirrhosis develops in 20-30% of the patients with chronic infection during 20 years. Cirrhosis eventually evolves into hepatocellular carcinoma in 1-4% of the patients per year.

Chronic hepatitis C is often asymptomatic and is mostly discovered accidentally. The natural course of viral C infection varies considerably from one person to another. Chronic hepatitis C more than other forms of hepatitis is diagnosed because of extrahepatic manifestations associated with the presence of HCV such as thyroiditis, porphyria cutanea tarda, cryoglobulinemia and glomerulonephritis, specifically membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, sicca syndrome, thrombocytopenia, lichen planus, diabetes mellitus and B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. We report here a case of a young man

Natural history, epidemiology, and histopathological features of chronic hepatis C (CHC) are well established in adults. Data on histopathological findings of CHC in children are still limited and controversial. We aimed to evaluate the histopathological features of CHC in children in Israel. We reviewed, retrospectively, 20 liver specimens from 20 children with CHC for inflammation and fibrosis, hepatocyte necrosis, fatty changes, cholestasis, bile duct damage, sinusoidal lymphocytosis, and glycogen storage. The most common histological feature was portal inflammation (95%) and lobular inflam

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with the development of lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs). The aim of this investigation was to determine the prevalence and characterization of monoclonal gammopathy and benign and malignant LPDs in individuals with chronic hepatitis C. A total of 233 subjects diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C (male/female ratio: 131/102, median age; 49 years) were studied. Serum and urine were examined for the presence of a monoclonal gammopathy. A bone marrow aspirate and biopsy was obtained in individuals with a monoclonal gammopathy. Thirty-two p

In 1999 a Swedish national expert panel published recommendations for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV) infection. Recently, pegylated interferon (peg-IFN) products have been introduced, and an increased knowledge concerning treatment of acute HCV and HCV-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection has been gained. As a result of this, an update of the Swedish recommendations was developed following an expert meeting in October 2002. The panel now recommends the use of peg-IFN together with ribavirin as the standard treatment. Owing to the excellent response rates in HCV genotype 2

It's well known that hepatitis C virus (HCV) related chronic liver disease may be associated with various extra hepatic disorders. These manifestations can revealed the hepatic disease. We review the available data on the conditions and asses their clinical implications: vascular, cutaneous, articular, neurological or renal disorders. There is no correlation between these extra hepatic manifestations and the severity of liver disease. Several recent studies have established a strong link between HCV infection and essential mixed cryoglobulinemia but some other extra hepatic associations are ju

Though patients with chronic hepatitis C after blood transfusion hepatitis decrease dramatically during the past decade, patients with it after non-transfused acute hepatitis C are still in existence. This means that new patients with chronic hepatitis C are on the decrease but not diminish. To the contrary, the number of patients with chronic hepatitis C is increasing. This depends on mainly dig up the undiscovered patients. These result in increasing the patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

The management of chronic viral hepatitis C is evolving rapidly. Monotherapy with interferon, the accepted standard of treatment until recently, achieves only a modest sustained virological response rate of 15%. Combination treatment with alpha-2b interferon and ribavirin has been shown to increase sustained response rates to 40% in patients who have never been treated with interferon and to 50% in those who have relapsed following monotherapy with interferon. However, side effects, which have led to the discontinuation of combination treatment in a significant proportion of patients, must be

AIM: To study incidence, special features and mechanisms underlying onset of extrahepatic lesions in HCV-infection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extrahepatic symptoms of chronic hepatitis C and its outcome--hepatic cirrhosis were studied in 157 patients. HCV-infection was confirmed by ELISA II and polymerase chain reaction (detection in the serum of anti-HCV and HCVRNA, respectively). Morphological studies of the liver were made in 134 patients, of other organs and tissues--in 20 patients. Immunological tests were made in 124 patients. Thyroid hormones, antibodies to thyroglobuline were measured wi

Clinical and laboratory findings of autoimmunity are common in chronic hepatitis C. Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), a disease of unknown cause, has been defined by use of the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group Score (AIH score), which quantifies clinical and laboratory parameters. To further validate the specificity of the International AIH score and investigate the similarities between hepatitis C and AIH, we measured the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group Score in patients with well-defined chronic hepatitis C. Thirty consecutive non-cirrhotic patients with chronic hepatitis C were e
