The hepatitis C virus causes both hepatic and extrahepatic disorders, particularly as regards dermatology. The link between essential mixed cryoglobulinemias and the C virus infection has been clearly evidenced., whereas its frequency seems low in other systemic vasculitis such as polyarteritis nodosa. Similarly, the link between C virus hepatopathy and porphyria cutanea tarda is now proven. Lichen planus is also described as being associated with this virus, but further epidemiological studies are required to determine the exact prevalence of lichen in C virus hepatopathy cases. Finally, vari

Herpes virus hepatitis varies in presentation, ranging from asymptomatic to acute liver failure, in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. Hepatitis caused by the Herpesviridae family is uncommon and usually results in mild disease. It is also often self-limiting, although in certain populations especially immunosuppressed patients, it can cause severe infections, leading to acute to fulminant hepatic failure. In addition, some isolated cases of fulminant disease in immunocompetent individuals have been reported. As the presentation is frequently non-specific, it is important

cDNA clone 11-7 was isolated by immunoscreening a cDNA library that was prepared from a pooled plasma of non-A non-B hepatitis (NANBH) patients using expression vector lambda gt11. This cDNA corresponds to known nucleotide positions 3983-4745 of the genome of hepatitis C virus (HCV). This clone was used as a probe for screening the HCV-related cDNAs in a cDNA library similarly prepared by using lambda gt10. As a result, six more cDNA clones were isolated and analyzed for their nucleotide sequences. The results strongly suggested that there are at least two groups of HCV, group I and group II.

Although a considerable number of studies have been undertaken to date, it is still controversial as to whether or not coinfection with schistosomiasis increases the susceptibility to or progression from Hepatitis B virus (HBV) or Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. This review is a closer examination of the key studies conducted on human populations on clinical factors that were published in English between 1975 and January 2015. Our review is mainly based on tables containing the salient information, which are arranged first by study population, country of study and publication date. We provi

Acute hepatitis can be caused by a number of viruses, especially A, B, C, E, delta, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus. Hepatitis A and B have been discussed previously in this series. The virus responsible for most cases of what commonly has been referred to as non-A non-B hepatitis has been tracked, and antibodies to certain proteins of this virus have been identified. This virus is now referred to as hepatitis C. The possible clinical outcomes after acute hepatitis C virus infection are similar to those for hepatitis B virus infection, except that hepatitis C is far more likely to beco

Among the five main viruses responsible for human hepatitis, hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are different while sharing similarities. Both viruses can be transmitted by blood or derivatives whereas HEV can also follow environmental or zoonotic routes. These highly variable RNA viruses can cause chronic hepatitis potentially leading to hepatocarcinoma. HCV and HEV can develop new structures and functions under selective pressure to adapt to host immunity, human tissues, treatments or even various animal reservoirs. Elsewhere, with directly acting antiviral treatments, HCV c

AIM: To study the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) replication interferences in patients with chronic hepatitis delta infected with different HBV genotypes.
METHODS: We conducted a transversal study including 68 chronic hepatitis delta (CHD) (37 HIV-positive) patients and a control group of 49 chronic hepatitis B (CHB) (22 HIV-positive) patients. In addition, a dynamic follow-up was performed in 16 CHD patients. In all the samples, the surface antigen of hepatitis B (HBsAg) serum titers were analyzed with the Monolisa HBsAg Ultra system (Bio-Rad), using as quantification st

Over the past two decades, progress in understanding human infections with hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) has been eclipsed by the priority of combating persistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. During that time, the global burden of liver disease caused by enteric hepatitis viruses has not abated. Because of vaccines, hepatitis A has become increasingly a disease of adults instead of early childhood in many regions of the world, resulting in an age-related shift toward more severe disease. HEV has remained endemic in many developing countr

The implication of genotypes is recognized increasingly in the clinical course of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and in response to anti-viral drugs of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Genotypic prevalence of both etiological agents varies geographically and no data are available for Tajikistan. To investigate the epidemiology and clinical significance of HBV and HCV genotypes in chronic hepatitis (group 1) and liver cirrhosis/hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (group 2) patients in Tajikistan, 124 patients with chronic liver disease (group 1 = 84 and group 2 = 40) were enrolled. Genotypes of HBV, HCV, and delta

A role for viruses in autoimmune hepatitis (AH) has been repeatedly proposed but convincing evidence links only two viruses, hepatitis A and Epstein-Barr virus, to the type 1 form of the disease, and only in those rare cases where a genetic predisposition exists and the viral infection occurs at the right time, i.e. when other unknown factors are cooperating. In spite of an impressive amount of information conclusively showing molecular mimicry between cytochrome P450IID6 (the target autoantigen of autoantibodies characteristic of AH type 2) sequences and viral (hepatitis C virus, herpes simpl

Recently, metabolic associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) became the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide and one of the most frequent causes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nonetheless, in this epidemiological trend, viral hepatitis remains the major driver in hepatic carcinogenesis. Globally, hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma, with an overall attributable risk of approximately 40%, followed by hepatitis C virus (HCV), which accounts for 28-30% of cases, with significant geographic variations between the Eastern and Western world. Discovery of five hepatitis viruses A to E has followed distinctive definable phases. Human experiments at Willowbrook identified two forms of hepatitis namely infectious hepatitis and serum hepatitis. The discovery of Australia antigen in 1965 led to rapid scientific developments in viral hepatitis. SH antigen was detected in sera of patients with serum hepatitis and soon SH antigen and Australia antigen were found to be identical and selectively associated with serum hepatitis. In 1970, 42-nm Dane particles were detected in Australia antigen positive sera and linked to the virus of serum hep

The classic hepatotropic viruses, hepatitis A through E, are not the only viral agents able to infect the liver. Other systemic viruses may cause hepatic injury that can range from mild and transient elevation of aminotransferases to acute hepatitis and occasionally acute liver failure and fulminant hepatitis. The clinical presentation may be indistinguishable from that associated with classic hepatotropic viruses. These agents include cytomegalovirus; Epstein-Barr virus; herpes simplex virus; varicella-zoster virus; human herpesvirus 6, 7, and 8; human parvovirus B19; adenoviruses among other

Since the beginning of blood transfusions concomitant transmission of viral hepatitis has been a frequent and serious side-effect. A first measure to reduce the frequency of transmission was the screening of blood donors for elevated levels of liver enzymes in the blood, which was introduced in Germany in the 1960s, but not in most other countries. After the discovery of hepatitis B virus (HBV), donors in all countries have been screened since the 1970s for its surface antigen (HBsAg). When it was realized that there was at least one other type of virus that was even more frequently transmitte

Human hepatitis viruses (HHVs) include hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis delta virus, and hepatitis E virus and can cause liver inflammation in their common human host. Usually, HHV is rapidly cleared by the immune system, following acute HHV invasion. The morbidities associated with hepatitis A virus and hepatitis E virus infection occur shortly after their intrusion, in the acute stage. Nevertheless, the viral infectious process can persist for a long period of time, especially in HBV and HCV infection, leading to chronic hepatitis and further pro

Five human hepatitis viruses cause most of the acute and chronic liver disease worldwide. Over the past 25 years, hepatitis C virus (HCV) in particular has received much interest because of its ability to persist in most immunocompetent adults and because of the lack of a protective vaccine. Here we examine innate and adaptive immune responses to HCV infection. Although HCV activates an innate immune response, it employs an elaborate set of mechanisms to evade interferon (IFN)-based antiviral immunity. By comparing innate and adaptive immune responses to HCV with those to hepatitis A and B vir

Viruses account for about 5% of all nosocomial infections. Viral cross-infection is most common in infants and children, but also occurs in other groups, including the elderly, institutionalized persons of all ages, immunecompromised hosts, and patients with underlying chronic pulmonary, renal, or cardiac disease. These infections are associated with extended length of hospital stay, as well as considerable morbidity and mortality. The new technology of rapid viral diagnosis allows a more timely and accurate recognition of viral infections, even in the smaller hospital with limited laboratory
