Mesenteric phlebosclerosis (MP) associated with herbal medicine is rarely reported and its endoscopic and radiological features remain poorly described. An 81-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for right lower abdominal pain and high-grade fever. Computed tomography (CT) revealed wall thickening, pericolic fat stranding, and linear calcifications extending from the cecum to the hepatic flexure of the colon. Ultrasonography (US) revealed wall thickening of the cecum and ascending colon. Colonoscopy (CS) revealed dark-purple edematous mucosa with erosion and ulcers from the cecum to the

We present the rare case of a young male with sinusoidal obstruction syndrome due to Ayurvedic herbal medicine which he took for management of bilateral leg swelling associated with protein-losing enteropathy due to intestinal lymphangiectasia. The patient developed progressive sinusoidal fibrosis leading to cirrhosis on long term follow-up. In a diagnosis that took three years to conclude, we showcase serial liver biopsies that reveal the rare disease progression. Complementary and alternative medicine use among apparently healthy population is a potentially modifiable risk factor for liver d

BACKGROUND: Low-back pain (LBP) is a common condition and imposes a substantial economic burden upon people living in industrialized societies. A large proportion of people with chronic LBP use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), visit CAM practitioners, or both. Several herbal medicines have been purported for use in treating people with LBP. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2006.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of herbal medicine for non-specific LBP.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following electronic databases up to September 2014: MEDLINE,

Although the majority of published cases of lead poisoning come from occupational exposures, some traditional remedies may also contain toxic amounts of lead. Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine that is native to India and is used in many parts of world as an alternative to standard treatment regimens. Here, we report the case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain, anemia, liver function abnormalities, and an elevated blood lead level. The patient was found to have been taking the Ayurvedic medicine Jambrulin prior to presentation. Chemical analysis of the medicatio

'Maqianzi' (the dried ripe seed of Strychnos nux-vomica L.) contains 1.0-1.4% each of strychnine and brucine. After processing to reduce its toxicity, 'maqianzi' was used as a herbal remedy for rheumatism, musculoskeletal injuries and limb paralysis. A 42-year old woman with neck pain was prescribed 15 g of 'maqianzi' to be taken in two doses at 7 hours apart, although the recommended dose was 0.3-0.6 g. She was apparently well after drinking the first of two bowls of 'maqianzi' decoction. One hour after she drank the second bowl of herbal decoction, she suddenly developed tonic contractions o

Glycyrrhizic acid, better known as licorice, is commonly found in various food and cosmetic products. Excessive consumption is known to cause a syndrome of apparent mineralocorticoid excess or pseudo hyperaldosteronism. Patients typically present with resistant hypertension and hypokalemia mimicking symptoms of primary hyperaldosteronism however laboratory workup will reveal low or normal levels of plasma renin and aldosterone in the serum. While diagnosis of licorice toxicity is relatively straight forward, the challenge lies in determining the culpable agent. We report the case of a Chinese

Alternative and indigenous systems of medicine are popular amongst the poorer sections of society in the developing world. Their use in the developed world has also increased in recent times. The source and composition of these medicines vary in different parts of the world, but herbs and other botanicals are central to these systems. Largely outside the ambit of regulatory control, herbal remedies are prepared by quasi-trained herbalists and not tested for safety. Toxicity can occur when a herb with unknown toxicity is consumed, incorrect identification leads to substitution of an innocuous h

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCHM) is widely used for treating vascular dementia (VaD) in China. Recent studies of a number of TCHMs have demonstrated in vitro biological activity and therapeutic effects in animals, but the published clinical evidence has not been systematically appraised.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of TCHMs listed in either the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (CP) or the Chinese National Essential Drug List (NEDL) that are used to treat VaD. A secondary aim was to identify promising TCHMs for further clinical research.

Management of functional gastrointestinal disorders is hindered by both poor efficacy and adverse effects of traditional pharmacological therapy. Herbal medicine may be an attractive alternative based on the perception of its 'natural' approach and low risk of side effects; however, the lack of standardization of drug components has limited the ability to perform rigorous clinical studies in Western countries. Japanese herbal medicine (JHM) is a standardized form of herbal medicine with regards to the quality and quantities of ingredients. While extensively studied and widely used in Asia, the

Chronic prostatitis is a very common and poorly understood condition with significant impact on quality of life. The etiology of prostatitis can be multifactorial and can present with a variety of symptoms. Given the lack of proven efficacy of conventional therapies such as antibiotics, many patients have turned to phytotherapy and other alternative treatments. This review will cover the alternative therapies commonly used in prostatitis with an emphasis on those with published data. These treatments include phytotherapy (quercetin, bee pollen) and physical therapy. Complementary therapies hav

A 56-year-old Indian lady presented with one week history of abdominal pain, jaundice and chronic polyarthralgia. She had evidence of hemolytic anemia and hepatitis. Her blood lead level was high and a peripheral blood film showed dense basophilic stippling. It is believed that the lead toxicity was due to the use of Indian herbal medicine.

After three endocrinologically normal cycles while undergoing unstimulated in-vitro fertilization treatment, a woman took a herbal medicine (Vitex agnus castus) at the beginning of a fourth unstimulated IVF treatment cycle. In this fourth cycle, her serum gonadotrophin and ovarian hormone measurements were disordered. One embryo resulted from the three eggs collected but a pregnancy did not ensue. She had symptoms suggestive of mild ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in the luteal phase. Two subsequent cycles were endocrinologically normal. We do not advocate the use of this herbal medicine to
