Deciphering the role of growth regulators in enhancing plant immunity against herbivory.

Plants are central to global food production, and the pursuit of sustainability aims to enhance or preserve food quality while safeguarding the environment. Due to their immobility, plants are unable to evade unfavourable climatic setups or interactions with other living creatures. Upon their interaction with insect herbivores, plants face biotic stress, which is a constant challenge for plants, causing molecular, physiological, and biochemical changes and reducing their productivity. To combat biotic stress caused by herbivores, plants have evolved intricate defence mechanisms through growth

Oviposition by a Specialist Herbivore Increases Susceptibility of Canola to Herbivory by a Generalist Herbivore.

Oviposition by specialist herbivores can alter the suitability of the host plant to subsequent infestation by other herbivores. In this study, we tested the effect of previous oviposition on canola, Brassica napus L., by a Brassica specialist, the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), on subsequent herbivory by the generalist feeder, the bertha armyworm (BAW), Mamestra configurata Walker (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The effect of DBM oviposition on subsequent BAW oviposition and larval feeding was tested in no-choice and choice experiments. Oviposition of BA

Cascading effects of early-season herbivory on late-season herbivores and their parasitoids.

There is an increasing awareness that herbivory by one insect species induces changes in a plant that affect the performance of other herbivore species that feed on the same plant. However, previous studies of interspecies interactions mediated by plant defense responses have rarely taken into account different insect guilds or the third trophic level. Using a combination of field and laboratory experiments, we examined how early-season herbivory in lima bean plants (Phaseolus lunatus) by the leaf-chewing herbivore Cerotoma ruficornis and the bean pod weevil Apion godmani affects the abundance

Constituents of glandular trichomes of Tithonia diversifolia: relationships to herbivory and antifeedant activity.

The herbivory activity of the bordered patch larvae (Chlosyne lacinia, Lepidoptera) on leaves of a Brazilian population of Tithonia diversifolia and the antifeedant potential of its leaf rinse extract were investigated. The caterpillars fed only on the adaxial face, where the density of glandular trichomes is very low, and avoided the abaxial face, which contains high levels of trichomes. Deterrent activity against the larvae was observed in leaf discs treated with leaf rinse extract at concentrations of 1-5% of fresh leaf weight. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis indicate

Inverse relationship between systemic resistance of plants to microorganisms and to insect herbivory.

Pre-inoculation of plants with a pathogen that induces necrosis leads to the development of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) to subsequent pathogen attack [1]. The phenylpropanoid-derived compound salicylic acid (SA) is necessary for the full expression of both local resistance and SAR [2] [3]. A separate signaling pathway involving jasmonic acid (JA) is involved in systemic responses to wounding and insect herbivory [4] [5]. There is evidence both supporting and opposing the idea of cross-protection against microbial pathogens and insect herbivores [6] [7]. This is a controversial area beca

Pathogen-triggered ethylene signaling mediates systemic-induced susceptibility to herbivory in Arabidopsis.

Multicellular eukaryotic organisms are attacked by numerous parasites from diverse phyla, often simultaneously or sequentially. An outstanding question in these interactions is how hosts integrate signals induced by the attack of different parasites. We used a model system comprised of the plant host Arabidopsis thaliana, the hemibiotrophic bacterial phytopathogen Pseudomonas syringae, and herbivorous larvae of the moth Trichoplusia ni (cabbage looper) to characterize mechanisms involved in systemic-induced susceptibility (SIS) to T. ni herbivory caused by prior infection by virulent P. syring

Evaluating crop options for managing rabbit populations: triticale exhibits lower herbivory than traditional cereals.

The European rabbit is a key species in Mediterranean ecosystems, yet its populations show contrasting trends: despite broad declines, some areas now sustain very high densities that cause crop damage. Conventional control methods, including hunting, have proven insufficient. As a complementary strategy, cultivating less palatable cereals may reduce crop losses while limiting food availability for rabbits, and, in turn, curbing further population growth. Triticale (x Triticosecale) has been proposed as resistant to rabbit herbivory, but its effectiveness remains unquantified. To quantify its r

Herbivory and Attenuated UV Radiation Affect Volatile Emissions of the Invasive Weed Calluna vulgaris.

Calluna vulgaris (heather) is an aggressive invasive weed on the Central Plateau, North Is., New Zealand (NZ), where it encounters different environmental factors compared to its native range in Europe, such as high ultraviolet radiation (UV) and a lack of specialist herbivores. The specialist herbivore Lochmaea suturalis (heather beetle) was introduced from the United Kingdom (UK) in 1996 as a biocontrol agent to manage this invasive weed. Like other plant invaders, a novel environment may be challenging for heather as it adjusts to its new conditions. This process of "adjustment" involves mo

Leaffolder Herbivory and Jasmonate Signalling Are Associated With Changes in Lipid-Derived Volatile Profiles in Rice.

Plants respond to insect herbivory by activating defence signalling pathways that regulate metabolism and volatile emissions. In rice, jasmonate signalling plays a central role in the production of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs), yet the contribution of lipid-derived semi-volatile compounds to parasitoid-mediated tritrophic interactions remains poorly understood. Here, we studied the effects of rice leaffolder (Cnaphalocrocis medinalis) herbivory, exogenous jasmonic acid (JA) treatment and mechanical damage on volatile profiles in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and evaluated the behavioural

Impacts of ramet density and herbivory on floral volatile emissions and seed production in Solidago altissima.

PREMISE: Plants produce an array of floral olfactory and visual cues to attract pollinators, including volatile organic compounds (VOC), which mediate plant-pollinator interactions and may be influenced by herbivory and neighboring plants. Consequently, these factors may affect plant fitness by disrupting pollination. However, most evidence comes from controlled experiments, limiting our understanding of how VOCs function in natural populations. This study investigated how herbivory and conspecific ramet density influence floral VOC profile, pollination, and seed production in a naturally occu

Plant-to-plant defence induction in cotton is mediated by delayed release of volatiles upon herbivory.

Caterpillar feeding immediately triggers the release of volatile compounds stored in the leaves of cotton plants. Additionally, after 1 d of herbivory, the leaves release other newly synthesised volatiles. We investigated whether these volatiles affect chemical defences in neighbouring plants and whether such temporal shifts in emissions matter for signalling between plants. Undamaged receiver plants were exposed to volatiles from plants infested with Spodoptera caterpillars. For receiver plants, we measured changes in defence-related traits such as volatile emissions, secondary metabolites, p

Unveiling sugarcane defense response to Mythimna separata herbivory by a combination of transcriptome and metabolic analyses.

BACKGROUND: Sugarcane is the most important sugar crop in the world. Like other crops, sugarcane suffers from herbivorous insect attack. The oriental armyworm Mythimna separata is a devastating pest of various crops in northeast Asia and an outbreak of this pest can result in substantial yield loss for sugarcane. However, the plant defense response situation is widely acquisition in model crops, but there is little information about how sugarcane plants defend themselves against this herbivore at the molecular and biochemical levels. RESULTS: We combined transcriptome and metabolomic analysis

Aboveground phytochemical responses to belowground herbivory in poplar trees and the consequence for leaf herbivore preference.

Belowground (BG) herbivory can influence aboveground (AG) herbivore performance and food preference via changes in plant chemistry. Most evidence for this phenomenon derives from studies in herbaceous plants but studies in woody plants are scarce. Here we investigated whether and how BG herbivory on black poplar (Populus nigra) trees by Melolontha melolontha larvae influences the feeding preference of Lymantria dispar (gypsy moth) caterpillars. In a food choice assay, caterpillars preferred to feed on leaves from trees that had experienced attack by BG herbivores. Therefore, we investigated th

Differences in volatile profiles of turnip plants subjected to single and dual herbivory above- and belowground.

Plants attacked by herbivorous insects emit volatile organic compounds that are used by natural enemies to locate their host or prey. The composition of the blend is often complex and specific. It may vary qualitatively and quantitatively according to plant and herbivore species, thus providing specific information for carnivorous arthropods. Most studies have focused on simple interactions that involve one species per trophic level, and typically have investigated the aboveground parts of plants. These investigations need to be extended to more complex networks that involve multiple herbivory

Enhancing inositol pyrophosphate accumulation in plants alters growth, phosphate homeostasis, and insect herbivory.

Phosphate (Pi) is a critical nutrient for plants and is often a limiting factor in food production, as many agricultural soils are limited in available Pi. Inositol pyrophosphates (PP-InsPs) are signaling molecules involved in Pi sensing and jasmonic acid (JA)-regulated plant defense. Here, we report that overexpression of 1,3,4-trisphosphate 5/6-kinase 1 (ITPK1) and the kinase domain of the dual-domain diphosphoinositol pentakisphosphate kinase 2 (VIP2KD) in Arabidopsis thaliana results in unique elevations in PP-InsPs, accompanied by altered leaf growth and senescence patterns, as well as de

Comparative and evolutionary analysis of Arabidopsis RIN4-like/NOI proteins induced by herbivory.

The spider mite Tetranychus urticae is an economically important agricultural pest, which feeds on a broad spectrum of plant species. In an RNAseq experiment performed in our laboratory, 4 of the 15 members of the RIN4-like/NOI family of Arabidopsis thaliana were significantly overexpressed after T. urticae infestation. Two of them (NOI3 and NOI5) are shorter and harbour one NOI domain, which characterises this family, and the other two (NOI10 and NOI11) have two-NOI domains. The only member of this family characterized is RIN4, a two-NOI intrinsically disordered protein anchored to the plasma

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus and Pseudomonas bacteria affect tomato response to Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) herbivory.

Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most significant invasive and destructive pests worldwide, causing serious economic losses to the tomato industry. Rhizosphere microorganism, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Pseudomonas bacteria, can interact with plants individually or collectively to improve plant growth and resistance to pests and disease. However, the effects of AMF, Pseudomonas, and their interactions on plant responses to insect herbivores remain unclear. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of single/dual inoculation with AMF (Fun

Spatial decoupling and herbivory tolerance stabilise a nursery pollination mutualism in an aquatic plant.

Nursery pollination systems face an inherent conflict: pollinator larvae consume seeds or floral tissues. Known conflict-resolution mechanisms, including host sanctions, selective abortion, chemical defences, and third-party suppression, operate in systems where larvae feed on seeds. How mutualisms are stabilised when larvae feed on vegetative tissues remains unclear. We investigated a novel nursery pollination involving the dioecious aquatic plant Ottelia jingxiensis, combining field observations, exclusion experiments, floral manipulation, and chemical and colour analyses. We tested whether

Specificity of phenolic glycoside induction in willow seedlings (Salix sericea) in response to herbivory.

Salix sericea (Marsh.) (Salicaceae) seedlings were used to investigate phytochemical induction of phenolic glycosides following beetle herbivory. Seven-week-old full-sibling seedlings were subjected to one of three damage treatments: Plagiodera versicolora adults, P. versicolora larvae, or Calligrapha multipunctata bigsbyana adults. Salicylate concentrations were measured locally (within damaged leaves) and systemically (above and below damaged leaves) 4 d later. Herbivory caused differential salicylate induction; 2'-cinnamoylsalicortin was induced, whereas salicortin was not. The induction of

Integrated proteomic analysis reveals differential remodelling of defense responses in potato to herbivory by Phthorimaea operculella.

Plants rely on both transcriptional reprogramming and post-translational machinery to regulate their responses to biotic stress. While transcriptome-wide dynamics underlying plant defense against insect herbivores have been extensively documented, systematic investigations into protein-level regulation and integrative analyses of these multi-layered regulatory networks remain limited. In this study, we employed quantitative proteomics and phospho-proteomics to characterize the protein-level responses of potato plants to attacks by Phthorimaea operculella. A total of 60 differentially expressed
