The first record of Centrocestus formosanus (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) in southern Brazil supported by molecular data.

Centrocestus formosanus is a digenean parasite first described from Asia, which parasitizes Melanoides tuberculata (Gastropoda: Thiaridae) at the first intermediate stage, and different fish species as second intermediate host. C. formosanus was previously recorded in Brazilian states, but never before in the southern region of this country. Recording and identification of digenean species through morphological identification is a taxonomic challenge. In light of this, we use an integrative taxonomic approach to report the occurrence of cercariae and metacercariae of C. formosanus in molluscs

Variable infection of stream salamanders in the southern Appalachians by the trematode Metagonimoides oregonensis (family: Heterophyidae).

Many factors contribute to parasites varying in host specificity and distribution among potential hosts. Metagonimoides oregonensis is a digenetic trematode that uses stream-dwelling plethodontid salamanders as second intermediate hosts in the Eastern US. We completed a field survey to identify which stream salamander species, at a regional level, are most likely to be important for transmission to raccoon definitive hosts. We surveyed six plethodontid species (N = 289 salamanders) from 23 Appalachian headwater sites in North Carolina: Desmognathus quadramaculatus (n = 69), Eurycea wilderae (n

Molecular detection of the zoonotic trematode Centrocestus formosanus (Nishigori, 1924) (Opisthorchiida, Heterophyidae) in Central Europe.

In our study, fancy southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus (Cyprinodontiformes, Poeciliidae) were examined due to breathing disorders and mortality. Fish came from Vietnam farm and were redistributed by international wholesaler. In fish, loss of appetite and gasping near the water surface was observed. Gill tissue showed small white spots, caused by metacercariae and areas of clearing surrounding the cysts. Primary branchial filaments were hyperplastic, necrotic, significantly deformed and shortened. Samples were fixed in 98% alcohol for molecular analyses. The identity of C. formosanus (Opi

Cytochrome b as a more promising marker for analysing the distribution vector for Metagonimus suifunensis (Trematoda: Heterophyidae).

In this study of Metagonimus suifunensis (M. suifunensis) in the Russian Southern Far East, the variability of the full-length sequences of the cytochrome b (cytb) mtDNA gene was assessed for the first time. In addition, the cox1 mtDNA gene sequences were also obtained for this species from new localities. In total, 87 and 81 sequences of the cytb and cox1 genes, respectively, were used in the current study. The cytb gene proved more promising and revealed two haplogroups that are associated with the spatial distribution of the species: geographical isolation caused the fixation of differences

Ultra-structure, genetic characterization and Immunological approach of fish borne zoonotic trematodes (Family: Heterophyidae) of a redbelly tilapia.

Fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FBZT) are highly significant zoonotic trematodes that can infect humans by eating raw or undercooked fish harboring active metacercaria. In this investigation, FBZT was found in samples of widely cultivated redbelly tilapia (Tilapia zillii) obtained from the Fayum governorate. Encysted metacercaria (EMC) infection was identified in fish belonging to the heterophyid family morphologically. The prevalence of heterophyid EMC was 30.5%. EMC was identified and implemented in a subsequent study on domestic pigeons (Columba livia domestica) carried out to allow adult f

Metagonimus suifunensis sp. n. (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) from the Russian Southern Far East: Morphology, life cycle, and molecular data.

The trematode from the Russian Southern Far East, earlier defined as M. yokogawai Katsuradai, 1912, was determined as a representative of the new species Metagonimus suifunensis sp. n. The life cycle of this trematode was experimentally studied and morphometric data for the cercariae, metacercariae and adult worm stages were obtained. The molecular data for samples from six Russian localities were received using the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region and 28S gene nuclear ribosomal DNA. The results revealed that M. suifunensis sp. n. does not have significant morphometric differences with M. yokogawai, M. t

A new species of Ascocotyle (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) from the South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens, off Patagonia, Argentina.

We describe a new heterophyid species, Ascocotyle (Ascocotyle) patagoniensis n. sp., based on specimens collected from the intestines of the South American sea lion Otaria flavescens from Patagonia (Argentina). Ascocotyle (A.) patagoniensis n. sp. is distinguished from the other species of the subgenus by the number of circumoral spines, which are arranged in 2 rows of 18 to 23. The new species also differs from the other species in having a gonotyl without papillae. The specimens exhibited the widest seminal receptacle described for a species of this subgenus. Species of the subgenus Ascocoty

Molecular characterization and confocal laser scanning microscopic study of Pygidiopsis macrostomum (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) parasites of guppies Poecilia vivipara.

Pygidiopsis macrostomum and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) pindoramensis (Digenea: Heterophyidae) parasitize guppies as intermediate hosts and, respectively, fish-eating mammals or birds as definitive hosts. Heterophyids have zoonotic potential, and molecular studies associated with morphological and ecological aspects have helped to clarify their taxonomy and phylogeny. Poecilia vivipara naturally parasitized by metacercariae of both species (100% prevalence) exhibit no external signs of parasitism. In this work, four new sequences of P. macrostomum (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA and ITS2 rDNA) and one new sequ

Resolution of cryptic species complexes within the genus Metagonimus (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) in Japan, with descriptions of four new species.

A nationwide fish survey was conducted in Japan to detect metacercariae of the genus Metagonimus (Trematoda: Heterophyidae). The metacercariae were subjected to DNA barcoding for molecular species identification. A phylogeny inferred from the sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) prompted us to recognize three cryptic species complexes (i.e., the M. miyatai complex, the M. takahashii complex, and the M. katsuradai complex). Each complex included one or two undescribed species. For morphological description, adult flukes of each species were raised through the experim

The life cycle of the potentially zoonotic trematode Metagonimus romanicus (Digenea: Heterophyidae): New insights from published and original data.

Fish-borne zoonoses are emerging worldwide, and although most human cases remain confined to tropical regions, particularly Southeast and East Asia, a few cases have been reported in Europe. This review summarizes published and new data on the life cycle of Metagonimus romanicus (misidentified as M. yokogawai, a human pathogen common in East Asia), a heterophyid trematode and one of the potentially fish-borne parasites in Europe. Metagonimus romanicus is distributed from the middle Danube in Central Europe (Slovakia) to eastern Ukraine (including the rivers of the Black Sea basin). Its distrib
