Effects of Ultralow Oxygen and Vacuum Treatments on Bed Bug (Heteroptera: Cimicidae) Survival.

Control of bed bugs is problematic, balancing among efficacy, safety, and cost. In this study, ultralow oxygen (ULO) and vacuum treatments were tested on bed bugs to develop a safer, effective, and environmentally friendly solution to kill bed bugs on infested items. ULO treatments were established by flushing sealed enclosures with nitrogen. All life stages of bed bugs were found to be susceptible to ULO and vacuum treatments, and efficacy of the treatments increased with reduced oxygen levels, increased treatment time, and temperature. In the ULO treatments, 100% mortality of bed bug nymphs

Giant fish-killing water bug reveals ancient and dynamic venom evolution in Heteroptera.

True Bugs (Insecta: Heteroptera) produce venom or saliva with diverse bioactivities depending on their feeding strategies. However, little is known about the molecular evolution of the venom toxins underlying these biological activities. We examined venom of the giant fish-killing water bug Lethocerus distinctifemur (Insecta: Belostomatidae) using infrared spectroscopy, transcriptomics, and proteomics. We report 132 venom proteins including putative enzymes, cytolytic toxins, and antimicrobial peptides. Over 73% (96 proteins) showed homology to venom proteins from assassin bugs (Reduviidae), i

A new species and updates on Paravelia Breddin, 1898 (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Veliidae) in Brazil.

Paravelia Breddin, 1898 is the most speciose genus of the subfamily Veliinae (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Gerromorpha, Veliidae). It has gone through revisions since the 1990s, with several species being transferred to other genera, and currently contains 46 species distributed from Mexico to Argentina, 35 of which occur in Brazil. Here, we describe P.intervalensis sp. nov. based on material obtained during an expedition carried out in 2023 in the Parque Estadual Intervales, state of São Paulo. The new species can be distinguished from congeners by the the following: body length between approximat

Fine structure of the triturating devices in pumps of the food Aphelocheirus and typical naucoridae (heteroptera).

The cibarial food pumps of aquatic Heteroptera contain specialized epipharyngeal triturating devices. In the Naucoridae, striated bands and transverse plates triturate particles against the underlying hypopharynx. Anterior to them lie a pair of oblique folds which play an accessory role. The gross morphology of these devices is very similar in representatives of five genera of typical Naucoridae (Ambrysus, Pelocoris, Limnocoris, Cataractocoris, Cryphocricos) and differs from that of the atypical genus Aphelocheirus. The scanning electron microscope reveals additional differences between Aphelo

Reevaluation of the type species and redescription of five species of Edessa (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Edessinae).

In accordance with the rules in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, the type species for the genus Edessa Fabricius, 1803 is now recognized to be Cimex antilope Fabricius, 1798 rather than the previously recognized Cimex cervus Fabricius, 1787. Edessa antilope is redescribed, as well as the following four species that have in the past been related or compared to E. antilope: E. arabs (Linnaeus, 1758) from French Guiana, Costa Rica and Panama (new record), E. helix Erichson, 1848 from Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Suriname (new record), Guyana, Brazil (new record), Bolivia (new

First record and vital statistics of Triatoma longipennis (Heteroptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae) from Southern Mexico.

Several insect species exist beyond their native habitats, some classified as invasive alien species (IAS), which can affect human health by carrying parasites and causing disease. These include vectors of vector-borne diseases, such as American trypanosomiasis, caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, a major vector-borne disease primarily affecting the Americas. Mexico ranks third in the number of individuals infected with T. cruzi. Among the 35 Mexican triatomine species, Triatoma longipennis is notably significant. The presence of T. longipennis is reported for the first time in Southern

Multidisciplinary approach detects speciation within the kissing bug Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus populations (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Reduviidae).

BACKGROUND: Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus (Hemiptera-Reduviidae) is a triatomine species with a wide geographic distribution and a broad phenotypic variability. In some countries, this species is found infesting and colonising domiciliary ecotopes representing an epidemiological risk factor as a vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, etiological agent of Chagas disease. In spite of this, little is known about P. rufotuberculatus genetic diversity. METHODS: Cytogenetic studies and DNA sequence analyses of one nuclear (ITS-2) and two mitochondrial DNA sequences (cyt b and coI) were carried out in P. ruf

Description of the immature of Podisus graziae Brugnera, Roell & Lemaître, 2021 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Asopinae).

As predaceous insects, the Asopinae have a great economic importance. The knowledge about the development of the species is essential for use in biological control programs. However, only 1% of the Neotropical Asopinae species have the immature stages known. In this work we describe the egg and the five nymphal stages of Podisus graziae Brugnera, Roell & Lemaître, 2021 using light and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that P. graziae eggs and nymphs present unique characters which are not observed in other species of the genus and subfamily. As other Podisus species, the egg prese

Superhydrophobicity and size reduction enabled Halobates (Insecta: Heteroptera, Gerridae) to colonize the open ocean.

Despite the remarkable evolutionary success of insects at colonizing every conceivable terrestrial and aquatic habitat, only five Halobates (Heteroptera: Gerridae) species (~0.0001% of all known insect species) have succeeded at colonizing the open ocean - the largest biome on Earth. This remarkable evolutionary achievement likely required unique adaptations for them to survive and thrive in the challenging oceanic environment. For the first time, we explore the morphology and behavior of an open-ocean Halobates germanus and a related coastal species H. hayanus to understand mechanisms of thes

Morphology of the female reproductive system and spermatheca in Notonecta maculata Fabricius, 1794 (Heteroptera: Notonectidae).

Notonecta maculata Fabricius, 1794 is an ecologically important freshwater predator of mosquito larvae and other aquatic invertebrates and has potential as a biological indicator of water quality. This study presents the first detailed microscopic anatomical and histological description of the female reproductive system of N. maculata, based on stereomicroscopy, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The female reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries, each with seven telotrophic meroistic ovarioles, a spermatheca, and a genital chamber. Each ovariole is differentiated in

Revision of Vitruvius (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) with the description of a new species from Cambodia and Thailand.

The monotypic Oriental genus Vitruvius Distant, 1901 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae), having an intricate and confusing taxonomic history, is revised. A new species, Vitruvius dobby Roca-Cusachs, Rider & Kment new species, is described from Cambodia and Thailand. Notes on the hypothesized classification of the genus based on both biology and morphology are presented, but its systematic placement is left unresolved. The morphological characteristics of the genus are redescribed. Habitus photographs of the type specimen of V. insignis Distant, 1901 and its labels, and photog

A distributional synopsis of the Pentatomidae (Heteroptera) north of Mexico, including new state and provincial records.

The species of Pentatomidae known to occur north of Mexico, comprising 223 species in 68 genera, are enumerated with taxonomic notes and updated and annotated distributions. Included in this update are 126 new state records reported for 62 pentatomid species in 30 genera. The copious annotations in these distributions and attendant bibliography serve as an extensive compilation of overlooked references that might contain distributional records for other insect, especially heteropteran, species.

Evidence for a sexually selected function of the attachment system in bedbugs Cimex lectularius (Heteroptera, Cimicidae).

Attachment to surfaces is a major aspect of an animal's interaction with the environment. Consequently, shaping of the attachment system in relation to weight load and substrate is considered to have occurred mainly by natural selection. However, sexual selection may also be important because many animals attach to their partner during mating. The two hypotheses generate opposing predictions in species where males are smaller than females. Natural selection predicts that attachment ability will scale positively with load, and hence body size, and so will be larger in females than males. Sexual

Importance of species of Triatominae (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) in risk of transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi in western Mexico.

The epidemiological risk of infection by Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas in human populations of western Mexico is still under study. Although most vectors in this region and their vector capability are already known, new studies estimating the risk and the importance of individual Triatominae species (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) for T. cruzi transmission are necessary. For 1 yr, every month, > 400 human dwellings and their surroundings in eight communities of two western Mexico states were searched for triatomines. More than 1,000 specimens representing four species were collected and checked for T. cruz
