Phenylalanine 15N enrichment likely indicates fungal-derived organic nutrient acquisition in mycoheterotrophic plants across fungal guilds.

Beyond fully mycoheterotrophic plants, many green plants may also obtain carbon from fungal partners. However, bulk stable isotope analyses often lack sufficient resolution in arbuscular mycorrhizal and rhizoctonia-associated orchid systems, limiting inference of fungal-derived organic nutrient acquisition. We measured δ15N values of glutamic acid (δ15NGlu) and phenylalanine (δ15NPhe) in 10 fully mycoheterotrophic species spanning arbuscular mycorrhizal, ectomycorrhizal, and saprotrophic fungal guilds, as well as in three photosynthetic species with contrasting inferred nutritional modes, toge

From heterotrophic monoculture to light-driven coculture: A sustainable platform for PHA biosynthesis and insights into interspecies metabolic interactions.

Microbial consortia combining phototrophic and heterotrophic partners offer a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for producing polyhydroxyalkanoates, which have attracted considerable attention as promising alternatives to petroleum-derived plastics. Here, a synthetic cyanobacteria-heterotroph consortium composed of Synechococcus elongatus and Priestia aryabhattai was employed to produce polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) directly from CO2. Transcriptomic analysis of the heterotrophic partner revealed the sucrose-to-PHB biosynthesis pathway and key gene cluster. Optimal coculture conditions were e

Protist-dominated hard substrate faunas thrive at the deepest ocean depths.

Deep-sea hard substrates host faunal novelties and distinct evolutionary lineages. However, sessile organisms on rocks are difficult to sample and largely unknown at extreme hadal depths. Here, we report a deep hard-substrate fauna (9000 to 10,898 meters), comprising 32 species of six protist and metazoan phyla, most millimeter-sized and new to science, from the Kermadec and Mariana trenches, using the manned submersible Fendouzhe. We show that the filamentous organisms dominating these assemblages are heterotrophic foraminiferans, challenging the earlier chemolithoautotrophic hypothesis. Larg

Heterotrophy and symbiosis affect energy reserves for pedal lacerates in the sea anemone Exaiptasia diaphana.

Nutrient exchange between corals and their dinoflagellate symbionts is the foundation of the stable symbiosis that underpins coral reef ecosystem success. The cnidarian-dinoflagellate holobiont engages in both autotrophy (photosynthates supplied by the symbiont) and heterotrophy (feeding by the host on microscopic organisms and particulate matter) to meet their nutritional demands. While considerable research has been devoted to understanding nutrient dynamics in adult corals and other symbiotic cnidarians, less is known about how the combination of heterotrophy and autotrophy influences nutri

Advances and new horizons in metabolic engineering of heterotrophic bacteria and cyanobacteria for enhanced lactic acid production.

Bacteria species such as E.Coli, Lactobacilli, and pediococci play an important role as starter strains in fermentation food or polysaccharides into lactic acid. These bacteria were metabolically engineered using multiple proven genome editing methods to enhance relevant phenotypes. The efficacy of these procedures varies depending on the editing tool used and researchers' ability to pick suitable recombinants, which significantly increased genome engineering throughput. Cyanobacteria produce oxygenic photosynthesis and play an important role in carbon dioxide fixing. The fixed carbon dioxide

Diversity and functional traits of the flower stigma microbiome in heterotrophic and autotrophic plants: Phelipanche ramosa vs. its host Nicotiana tabacum.

Phelipanche ramosa is a widespread parasitic weed of significant economic importance, particularly affecting tomatoes and tobacco. Despite its well-documented impact on agriculture, its microbial associations remain poorly understood. For the first time, we used Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) to determine the composition of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) on the flower stigma of P. ramosa and its host, Nicotiana tabacum, as well as to explore their potential functions. The stigma is a nutrient-rich environment that fosters a varied microbial community, encompassing both beneficial and pa

Elevated heterotrophic activity in Guaymas Basin hydrothermal plumes influences deep-sea carbon cycling.

Deep-sea hydrothermal plumes are characterized by chemoautotrophic production fueled by the oxidation of reduced inorganic substrates. Recently, organic carbon cycling was proposed, but the metabolic fate of organic carbon is unconstrained. Here, we investigate organic carbon metabolisms in and around a hydrothermal plume to constrain the impacts of hydrothermal vents on deep-sea carbon cycling. Acetate and methanol are detected throughout the water column and are rapidly metabolized in Guaymas Basin waters. Heterotrophic production, up to 7.69 µg C L-1 d-1, greatly exceeds chemoautotrophic pr

Stable isotope signatures and specific mycobionts reveal the mycoheterotrophic nutrient acquisition of Danxiaorchis yangii.

Fully mycoheterotrophic orchids rely entirely on fungal symbionts for carbon acquisition, are often highly specialized in their fungal associations, and exhibit stable isotope signatures distinct from autotrophic plants. Danxiaorchis yangii is a rare, leafless orchid endemic to subtropical China whose nutritional ecology has not been previously examined. We combined high-throughput fungal community profiling with multi-element stable isotope natural abundance analyses (δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N, δ²H, δ¹⁸O) to investigate fungal associations and nutrient acquisition in D. yangii. Mycorrhizal rhizomes were dom

Environmental drivers of heterotrophic euglenoid diversity in Czech bogs.

We investigated whether the diversity and community composition of morphologically recognizable heterotrophic euglenoids are associated with major environmental gradients in Czech bog habitats. Bogs and other Sphagnum-dominated wetlands are biodiversity hotspots for microbial eukaryotes, yet the ecological structuring of heterotrophic euglenoids in these systems remains poorly understood. We examined 419 samples from 110 sites from mire sites using live light microscopy, and species occurrences were related to habitat characteristics and water chemistry using correlation analyses, canonical co

Fatty acid signatures distinguish autotrophy, partial mycoheterotrophy, and full mycoheterotrophy in angiosperms.

Detecting partial mycoheterotrophy in green plants remains challenging, particularly in associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) or rhizoctonia fungi, because natural-abundance stable isotope patterns often provide limited diagnostic resolution in these systems. We tested whether fatty acid composition, widely used to infer trophic relationships in animal and soil ecology, provides complementary evidence of fungal carbon acquisition by plants. We characterized fatty acid profiles of 21 autotrophic reference plants, six partially mycoheterotrophic plants, and 17 fully mycoheterotrophic pla

Gas-Phase Integration of Trophically Distinct Microbial Cultures for Net-Reduced CO2 and Enhanced Metabolite Production.

The continued increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations has intensified global efforts to develop sustainable biotechnologies that capture and reutilise carbon rather than releasing it. While photosynthetic microorganisms provide a renewable route for CO2 fixation into organic products, heterotrophic fermentation remains the industrial standard due to its high productivity, controllability and scalability. Consequently, integrating the carbon efficiency of autotrophic processes with the productivity of heterotrophic systems may represent a promising strategy toward circular biomanufacturing.

Aromatic acid metabolism in Methylobacterium extorquens reveals interplay between methylotrophic and heterotrophic pathways.

Efforts toward microbial conversion of lignin to value-added products face many challenges because lignin's methoxylated aromatic monomers release toxic C1 byproducts such as formaldehyde. The ability to grow on methoxylated aromatic acids (e.g., vanillic acid) has been identified in certain clades of methylotrophs, bacteria characterized by their unique ability to tolerate and metabolize high concentrations of formaldehyde. Here, we use a phyllosphere methylotroph isolate, Methylobacterium extorquens SLI 505, as a model to identify the fate of formaldehyde during methylotrophic growth on vani

Acidocella aromatica sp. nov.: an acidophilic heterotrophic alphaproteobacterium with unusual phenotypic traits.

Three obligately heterotrophic bacterial isolates were identified as strains of a proposed novel species of extremely acidophilic, mesophilic Alphaproteobacteria, Acidocella aromatica. They utilized a restricted range of organic substrates, which included fructose (but none of the other monosaccharides tested), acetate and several aromatic compounds (benzoate, benzyl alcohol and phenol). No growth was obtained on complex organic substrates, such as yeast extract and tryptone. Tolerance of the proposed type strain of the species (PFBC) to acetic acid was much greater than that typically reporte

Autochthonous particulate organic carbon drives extreme carbon fluxes in river-reservoir systems: Potential role of interactions between picophytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria.

Reservoir ecosystems are significant natural sources of atmospheric methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), while also receiving large amounts of nutrients and particulate organic carbon (POC) from various sources. Ecosystem-level events, such as variations in microbial community composition or abundance, can substantially contribute to the occurrence of extremes in carbon (CH4 and CO2) concentrations and fluxes. The trophic linkage between picophytoplankton (PP) and heterotrophic bacteria (HB) plays a vital role in regulating POC, thereby shaping patterns of carbon emissions in aquatic system

Apparent thermal acclimation of soil heterotrophic respiration mainly mediated by substrate availability.

Multiple lines of existing evidence suggest that increasing CO2 emission from soils in response to rising temperature could accelerate global warming. However, in experimental studies, the initial positive response of soil heterotrophic respiration (RH ) to warming often weakens over time (referred to apparent thermal acclimation). If the decreased RH is driven by thermal adaptation of soil microbial community, the potential for soil carbon (C) losses would be reduced substantially. In the meanwhile, the response could equally be caused by substrate depletion, and would then reflect the gradua

Isolated heterotrophic nitrifying and aerobic denitrifying bacterium for treating actual refinery wastewater with low C/N ratio.

Heterotrophic nitrifying and aerobic denitrifying bacteria that have been widely isolated from complicated activated sludge microflorae demonstrate dominant advantages in simultaneous removal of ammonium and nitrogen oxides under aerobic conditions. However, owing to the need of organic carbon to support bacterial growth, nitrogen removal of actual industrial wastewater with low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio remains a challenge. Here, Pseudomonas mendocina Y7 was identified and presented to effectively remove nitrogen of actual refinery wastewater with low C/N ratio. The isolated bacterium sh

Efficient ammonium removal through heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification by Acinetobacter baumannii strain AL-6 in the presence of Cr(VI).

A novel strain AL-6, which was identified as Acinetobacter baumannii, presented an efficient ability to remove ammonium. Nitrogen balance indicates that 55.8% of the initial NH4+-N was ultimately converted to N2 through heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification, while 30.6% was contributed to assimilation. More interestingly, efficient ammonium removal could be achieved in the presence of Cr(VI) of 0-10 mg L-1 by strain AL-6. Meanwhile, Cr(VI) reduction was observed. The Cr(VI) was mainly reduced to less toxic Cr(III) by strain AL-6 in the culture, while a small part of Cr(VI) mi

Photoresponse in the heterotrophic marine dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina.

Expressed rhodopsins were detected by proteomic analysis in an investigation of potential signal receptors in the cell membrane of the marine heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina (CCMP604). We inferred these to be sensory rhodopsins, a type of G-protein-coupled receptor trans-membrane signaling molecule. Because phototactic behavior based on sensory rhodopsins has been reported in other protists, we investigated the photosensory response of O. marina. This dinoflagellate exhibited strongest positive phototaxis at low levels (2-3 μE/m(2)/s) of white light when the cells were previously

Ammonium and organic carbon co-removal under Feammox heterotrophic conditions at low Fe3+ concentrations.

Feammox, the anaerobic oxidation of ammonium coupled to Fe3+ reduction, offers a promising alternative for nitrogen removal under low-oxygen and high-organic load conditions. In this study, Feammox was successfully enriched from Anammox sludge by adjusting environmental conditions. Ammonium and organic carbon were co-removed at low Fe3+ concentrations (200 mg/L), indicating that Feammox can operate under heterotrophic conditions. Ferrous iron generation, XRD analysis, and PCR amplification of functional genes (nirK, narG, nxrA) support the occurrence of Feammox and iron cycling. Key microorgan

Defatted heterotrophic microalgae (Aurantiochytrium limacinum SR21) was treated with high temperature water (175-350°C, 10-90min) to obtain nitrogen and phosphorous nutrients as a water soluble fraction (WS). Yields of nitrogen and phosphorous recovered in WS varied from 38 to 100% and from 57 to 99%, respectively. Maximum yields of nitrogen containing compounds in WS were proteins (43%), amino acids (12%) and ammonia (60%) at treatment temperatures of 175, 250 and 350°C, respectively. Maximum yield of phosphorous in WS was 99% at a treatment temperature of 250°C. Cultivation experiments of mi
