Interspecific hybridization among cultivars of hardy Hibiscus species section Muenchhusia.

Rose mallows belong to the Muenchhusia section of the Hibiscus genus. They represent a small group of cold tolerant North American plants and are popular ornamentals mainly because of their abundant, large and colorful flowers. Due to their geographical origin they are well suited for garden use in temperate regions worldwide. The aim of the study was to investigate hybridization barriers in crosses among cultivars of Hibiscus species from the Muenchhusia section: H. coccineus, H. laevis and H. moscheutos. Crossing barriers were identified as both pre- and post-zygotic. The analysis of pollen

Therapeutic Potential of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. in Attenuating Cardiovascular Risk Factors.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent a broad spectrum of diseases afflicting the heart and blood vessels and remain a major cause of death and disability worldwide. CVD progression is strongly associated with risk factors, including hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, oxidative stress, inflammation, fibrosis, and apoptosis. These risk factors lead to oxidative damage that results in various cardiovascular complications including endothelial dysfunctions, alterations in vascular integrity, the formation of atherosclerosis, as well as incorrigible cardiac remodeling. The use of conven

Mechanical buckling can pattern the light-diffracting cuticle of Hibiscus trionum.

Many species have cuticular striations that play a range of roles, from pollinator attraction to surface wettability. In Hibiscus trionum, the striations span multiple cells at the base of the petal to form a pattern that produces a type of iridescence. It is postulated, using theoretical models, that the pattern of striations could result from mechanical instabilities. By combining the application of mechanical stress with high-resolution imaging, we demonstrate that the cuticle buckles to create a striated pattern. Through mechanical modeling and cryo-SEM fractures, we show that the cuticle

Integrated morpho-physiological and transcriptomic dissection of waterlogging tolerance in Hibiscus hamabo.

Hibiscus hamabo is an important coastal ornamental plant and a pioneer tree species for coastal protection forests. Prolonged waterlogging severely restricts its ecological expansion toward the intertidal‑zone forefront and limits population regeneration; clarifying its waterlogging‑adaptation mechanisms is essential for coastal wetland ecological restoration. In this study, phenotypic, physiological and transcriptomic responses of H. hamabo under 3-, 9-, and 18-day waterlogging treatments were characterized. Prolonged waterlogging markedly suppressed plant growth and biomass accumulation, and

High-Sensitivity Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensors Based on Biomimetic Hibiscus Flower Microstructures.

The integration of low-dimensional nanomaterials with microscale architectures in flexible pressure sensors has garnered significant interest due to their outstanding performance in healthcare monitoring. However, achieving high sensitivity across different magnitudes of external pressure remains a critical challenge. Herein, we present a high-performance flexible pressure sensor crafted from biomimetic hibiscus flower microstructures coated with silver nanowires. When compared with a flat electrode, these microstructures as electrodes display significantly enhanced sensitivity and an extended

Metalation of Hibiscus-derived chlorophyll: Spectroscopic elucidation of a cobalt-porphyrin complex.

Chlorophyll is a naturally occurring chlorin macrocycle capable of interacting with transition metal ions. In this study, chlorophyll extracted from Hibiscus sabdariffa leaves was treated with cobalt(II) under controlled conditions to investigate possible metal-induced modifications. Considering that native chlorophyll contains a central Mg2+ ion, partial demetalation to pheophytin-like intermediates is expected prior to interaction with cobalt. UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed a bathochromic shift of the Soret band (≈432 → ≈448 nm) and reorganization of the Q-band region (≈662 → ≈642 nm), indicat

The first transcriptome dataset of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) calyces during maturation.

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is recognized for its phytochemical compounds such as anthocyanins, which possess pharmacological potentials in the treatments of hypertension, diabetes, cancer, hyperlipidaemia and hyperglycaemia. The calyx is the most commercially valuable part of the roselle and usually harvested at maturation. However, genetic study to understand the transcriptome changes in the calyx during maturation has yet to be explored. In this study, we sequenced the transcriptomes of roselle calyces at maturation stages III and IV using Illumina NextSeq 500 platform. These are the t

Response of hibiscus mealybug (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) to citrus volatiles induced by mechanical injury.

Hibiscus mealybug, Nipaecoccus viridis (Newstead) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is a recent invasive pest of citrus and many other crops in Florida. Nipaecoccus viridis attacks all above ground parts of citrus trees and heavy infestation can cause leaf drop and premature abortion of developing fruits. We quantified greater captures of N. viridis in cardboard band traps on areas of citrus trees that were intentionally injured by mechanical rasping of epidermal tissues as compared with similar but uninjured citrus branches. Direct field collection of headspace volatiles from mechanically injured

Computer-Aided Identification of Cholinergic and Monoaminergic Inhibitory Flavonoids from Hibiscus sabdariffa L.

BACKGROUND: The reduced levels of acetylcholine and dopamine lead to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease PD, respectively, due to the action of cholinesterase and monoamine oxidase B. METHODS: Therapeutic options for AD and PD involve respective cholinergic and monoaminergic inhibitors, and considering the adverse outcomes of cholinergic- and monoaminergic- inhibitory therapeutics, phytoconstituents may be promising alternatives. Reports have shown that different extracts of the calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa exhibit anticholinesterase and monoamine oxidase B inhibitory properties

Mechanism of delayed puberty in rats whose mothers consumed Hibiscus sabdariffa during lactation.

CONTEXT: Extract of the calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. (HS) (Malvaceae) has been reported to decrease fluid and food intake in lactating rats through a mechanism not yet fully understood. It has also been reported that rat pups undernourished during lactation have delayed puberty onset, suggesting a link between nutrition and onset of puberty. There is paucity of data addressing the effect of maternal consumption of HS during lactation on the onset of puberty in the female offspring. OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to investigate whether consumption of HS during lactation will a
