Egalitarianism as hierarchy control: Predictive social minds and the evolution of anti-dominance institutions.

Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden redefine egalitarianism as a process rather than an outcome. We extend this framework by arguing that egalitarian societies represent cognitive-ecological equilibria in which evolved psychological systems regulate dominance hierarchies. The six identified processes correspond to distinct neurocognitive mechanisms for hierarchy suppression, interpretable as distributed strategies for managing hierarchical risk within predictive processing.

When Social Hierarchy, Power, and Collective Autonomy Motivate Social Movement and Counter-Movement Mobilization Among Disadvantaged and Advantaged Groups.

What happens when disadvantaged group members try to gain power in an attempt to protect their collective autonomy? The present integrative review outlines dynamic social processes and conditions under which efforts to restrict a group's collective autonomy motivate social movement mobilization among disadvantaged groups to challenge social hierarchies that limit their power. This, in turn, threatens advantaged groups' perceptions of their access to power and, by extension, their sense of collective autonomy, motivating them to reaffirm the existing social hierarchy by mobilizing counter-movem

[Genotype-related changes in the reproductive function under social hierarchy in laboratory male mice].

The study was designed to investigate genetic differences in reproductive consequences of social hierarchy using inbred mice strains BALB/cLac, PT and CBA/Lac. Two adult males of different genotypes were housed together for 5 days. Hierarchical status of both partners was determined by asymmetry in agonistic behavior. The number of epididymal sperm and a proportion of abnormal sperm, weights of reproductive organs, serum concentration and testicular content of testosterone, and the testosterone response to introduction of a receptive female were determined. The testosterone measures were signi

The fluency of social hierarchy: the ease with which hierarchical relationships are seen, remembered, learned, and liked.

We tested the hypothesis that social hierarchies are fluent social stimuli; that is, they are processed more easily and therefore liked better than less hierarchical stimuli. In Study 1, pairs of people in a hierarchy based on facial dominance were identified faster than pairs of people equal in their facial dominance. In Study 2, a diagram representing hierarchy was memorized more quickly than a diagram representing equality or a comparison diagram. This faster processing led the hierarchy diagram to be liked more than the equality diagram. In Study 3, participants were best able to learn a s

Post-weaning social environment shapes reward learning, social hierarchy, and pCREB signaling in adult male rats exposed to early-life adversity.

Adverse experiences during early life are known to disrupt neuronal development and maturation of reward circuits, affecting both social behavior and responses to reward-predicting stimuli. We have previously demonstrated that rats exposed during early life to denial of expected reward in the form of maternal contact (DER, animal model of maternal neglect) develop anhedonia, increased aggressive play-fighting behavior, aberrant prefrontal structure, reward system overactivation, deficient adult learning, and disturbed social dynamics during a group-based food anticipation (FA) learning task. Importance of Social Hierarchy in Morphometry, and Socio-Sexual and Reproductive Behaviors in Dorper Sheep in Northern Mexico.

One of the most important aspects of animal production is the reproductive behavior, where a widely used strategy in small ruminants is the "male effect". However, the response to this effect can vary depending on several factors, including the social rank (SR) of both sexes. The objective of this study was to evaluate how SR influences morphometric and socio-sexual variables in Dorper sheep in Northern Mexico. Through behavioral tests, 33 rams and 59 ewes were divided into two groups taking into account their SR. Rams included high SR (HSR; n = 14) and low SR (LSR; n = 19), while ewes include

The influence of endogenous and exogenous sex steroid hormones and social hierarchy on decision-making: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Decision-making is a complex process influenced by factors such as hormone concentration and social hierarchy. This study underlines the intricate interplay between these biological and social factors, emphasizing the necessity of considering both to comprehend the variability in decision-making processes. METHOD: The present systematic review summarizes and compares included studies that investigate the effect of sex steroid hormones (testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone) on decision-making (risky, uncertain, and social decision-making), and social hierarchy, as well as the eff

An Adolescent Sensitive Period for Social Dominance Hierarchy Plasticity Is Regulated by Cortical Plasticity Modulators in Mice.

Social dominance hierarchies are a common adaptation to group living and exist across a broad range of the animal kingdom. Social dominance is known to rely on the prefrontal cortex (PFC), a brain region that shows a protracted developmental trajectory in mice. However, it is unknown to what extent the social dominance hierarchy is plastic across postnatal development and how it is regulated. Here we identified a sensitive period for experience-dependent social dominance plasticity in adolescent male mice, which is regulated by mechanisms that affect cortical plasticity. We show that social do

Transcranial direct current stimulation suggests a causal role of the medial prefrontal cortex in learning social hierarchy.

Social hierarchies can be inferred through observational learning of social relationships between individuals. Yet, little is known about the causal role of specific brain regions in learning hierarchies. Here, using transcranial direct current stimulation, we show a causal role of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in learning social versus non-social hierarchies. In a Training phase, participants acquired knowledge about social and non-social hierarchies by trial and error. During a Test phase, they were presented with two items from hierarchies that were never encountered together, requiri

Dominance hierarchies and social status ascent opportunity: anticipatory behavioral and physiological adjustments in a Neotropical cichlid fish.

In this work we characterized the social hierarchy of non-reproductive individuals of Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840), independently for both sexes, and its relationship to the opportunity for social status ascent. Female and male individuals who were located on the top rank of the social hierarchy, ascended in social status when the opportunity arose, therefore indicating that dominance is directly correlated with social ascent likelihood. Dominance was positively correlated with size in males but not in females, suggesting for the latter a relationship with intrinsic features such as aggre

Innate sensitivity to stress facilitates inflammation, alters metabolism and shortens lifespan in a mouse model of social hierarchy.

It is known that stress alters homeostasis and may lead to accelerated aging. However, little is known about the contribution of innate susceptibility to stress to the deterioration of physiological functions, acceleration of aging and developing of age-related diseases. By using socially-submissive stress susceptible (Sub) and socially-dominant stress resilient (Dom) selectively bred mouse model we observed a marked reduction in the lifespan of both male and female Sub mice. We found that innate susceptibility to stress correlates with chronic inflammation, development of splenomegaly and a s

The interaction between social hierarchy and depression/anxiety: Involvement of glutamatergic pyramidal neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC).

Social hierarchy greatly impacts physical and mental health, but the relationship between social hierarchy and depression/anxiety and the underlying neural mechanism remain unclear. The present study used the tube test to determine the social hierarchy status of mice and then performed several behavioral tests to evaluate depression-like and anxiety-like behaviors. Electrophysiological techniques were used to record the firing activities of glutamatergic pyramidal neurons and local field potentials in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). The results suggested that the mice in each cage (4 per

S-Adenosyl-Methionine alleviates sociability aversion and reduces changes in gene expression in a mouse model of social hierarchy.

Epigenetic changes are an important pathogenic mechanism in many diseases, including a variety of psychiatric disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and depression. Methyl donors such as S-Adenosyl-Methionine (SAMe) may cause epigenetic modifications, especially during embryonic development when the epigenetic memory is established. We treated pregnant submissive (Sub) mice exhibiting depressive-like phenotype with SAMe during days 12-14 of gestation aiming to alleviate the depressive - like symptoms in their offspring and normalize the expression in their prefrontal cortex of severa

When social identities intersect: understanding inequities in growth outcomes by religion- caste and religion-tribe as intersecting strata of social hierarchy for Muslim and Hindu children in India.

BACKGROUND: Minority social status determined by religion, caste and tribal group affiliations, are usually treated as independent dimensions of inequities in India. This masks relative privileges and disadvantages at the intersections of religion-caste and religion-tribal group affiliations, and their associations with population health disparities. METHODS: Our analysis was motivated by applications of the intersectionality framework in public health, which underlines how different systems of social stratification mutually inform relative access to material resources and social privilege, t

Social hierarchy and resilience affect stress-induced PTSD via Uba7 gene expression and subsequent inflammation in microglia of the mPFC.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs in individuals who have experienced a traumatic event; however, not everyone who has experienced a traumatic event will develop this condition, highlighting the significance of susceptibility factors. Social hierarchy is a critical behavioral regulator of stress susceptibility and a risk factor for mental disorders. Individual resilience, the ability to recover from acute stress and preclinical injury, also plays a role in PTSD susceptibility. Some studies found that individuals with higher social rank were more resilient. Furthermore, individuals o

Hierarchical fluctuation shapes a dynamic flow linked to states of consciousness.

Consciousness arises from the spatiotemporal neural dynamics, however, its relationship with neural flexibility and regional specialization remains elusive. We identified a consciousness-related signature marked by shifting spontaneous fluctuations along a unimodal-transmodal cortical axis. This simple signature is sensitive to altered states of consciousness in single individuals, exhibiting abnormal elevation under psychedelics and in psychosis. The hierarchical dynamic reflects brain state changes in global integration and connectome diversity under task-free conditions. Quasi-periodic patt

The perils of perceived power: The dual-threat model of antisemitism.

Antisemitism, characterized by prejudice, discrimination, and hostility toward Jews, is marked by two enduring paradoxes. First, although people typically defer to powerholders, perceptions of Jews as powerful are associated with disdain rather than deference among antisemites. Second, antisemitism emerges among individuals with opposing ideological worldviews, those who strongly support societal hierarchies and those who vehemently oppose them. To explain these paradoxes, we introduce the dual-threat model of antisemitism, which highlights the central role of perceived Jewish power in fueling
