Investigation of the Relationship Between Vocal Fatigue, Quality of Life, and Compliance With Vocal Hygiene in Professional Voice Users.

PURPOSE: Intensive voice use may lead to the development of voice disorders or voice complaints, such as vocal fatigue, for professional voice users (teachers, academics, call center workers, actors, singers, speech and language therapists, voice trainers, and religious officials). Vocal fatigue has a detrimental effect on occupational, emotional, and social performance, besides the quality of life of the individual. The effect of voice hygiene interventions on voice fatigue is not fully known. The results of studies conducted with different occupational groups are inconsistent. The present st

Bilateral Vocal Cord Paralysis after Anterior Cervical Discectomy Following Cervical Spine Injury: A Case Report.

Bilateral vocal cord paralysis is a rare and preventable complication of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Herein, we report a fatal case of bilateral vocal cord paralysis after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACD/F). A 65-year-old man with cervical spine trauma and anterior cord syndrome, following car overturn presented to our emergency department. The patient had C6-T10 prolapsed discs for which ACD/F was performed. In the recovery room he developed stridor and respiratory distress immediately after extubation, and was reintubated. Otolaryngological evaluation revealed bilat

Auditory pathways of caudal telencephalon and their relation to the song system of adult male zebra finches.

Auditory information is critical for vocal imitation and other elements of social life in song birds. In zebra finches, neural centers that are necessary for the acquisition and production of learned vocalizations are known, and they all respond to acoustic stimulation. However, the circuits by which conspecific auditory signals are perceived, processed, and stored in long-term memory have not been well documented. In particular, no evidence exists of direct connections between auditory and vocal motor pathways, and two newly identified centers for auditory processing, caudomedial neostriatum

Lesions of a telencephalic nucleus in male zebra finches: Influences on vocal behavior in juveniles and adults.

Male zebra finches learn to sing during a restricted phase of juvenile development. Song learning is characterized by the progressive modification of unstable song vocalizations by juvenile birds during development, a process that leads to the production of stereotyped vocal patterns as birds reach adulthood. The medial magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (mMAN) is a small cortical region that has been implicated in song behavior based on its neuronal projection to the High Vocal Center (HVC), a nucleus that is critical for adult vocal production and presumably also plays a role

Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography imaging of benign and malignant laryngeal lesions: an in vivo study.

OBJECTIVE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT), an imaging technology that provides cross-sectional subsurface tissue structure images using back-scattered light, is a promising noninvasive imaging modality for in vivo assessment of vocal fold layered microstructure. Polarization-sensitive OCT (PS-OCT) augments conventional OCT by detecting changes in the polarization state of reflected light. This study imaged various benign and malignant laryngeal pathologies in patients undergoing direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia to determine whether PS-OCT would provide useful additional informa

Electroglottography and vocal fold physiology.

The electroglottogram (EGG) is known to be related to vocal fold motion. A major hypothesis undergoing examination in several research centers is that the EGG is related to the area of contact of the vocal folds. This hypothesis is difficult to substantiate with direct measurements using human subjects. However, other supporting evidence can be offered. For this study we made measurements from synchronized ultra high-speed laryngeal films and from EGG waveforms collected from subjects with normal larynges and patients with vocal disorders. We compare certain features of the EGG waveform to (a)

National trends in pediatric laryngeal reinnervation.

OBJECTIVES: Over the last decade, many pediatric otolaryngologists have come to regard non-selective laryngeal reinnervation (NSLR) from ansa cervicalis to the recurrent laryngeal nerve as the preferred definitive treatment for unilateral vocal fold paralysis. The purpose of this study is to review national trends in NSLR. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study using the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS), 2004 to 2022. Linear regression to identify trends in the incidence of reinnervation and vocal fold paralysis. RESULTS: 198 NSLRs were identified. Mean patient age was 8.2 years old (

Sleep-related breathing disorders in patients with multiple system atrophy and vocal fold palsy.

We performed sleep studies in eight patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) and three patients with peripheral bilateral vocal fold palsy (PBVFP) and investigated stenosis of the upper airway tract during sleep in MSA patients with vocal fold palsy. Among the eight MSA patients in this study, five had definite glottic snoring and two others were suspected of having glottic snoring. Of the PBVFP patients, two had glottic snoring. Three of 11 patients died, and two of the three deaths occurred during sleep. Glottic snoring indicated a high degree of negative esophageal pressure. High negativ

Questionário de Saúde e Higiene Vocal (Vocal Health and Hygiene Questionnaire): Development, Validation, and Cutoff Value.

INTRODUCTION: Vocal hygiene is regarded as a patient-centered behavioral intervention that plays a crucial role in vocal rehabilitation and in the vocal conditioning of professional voice users. Accordingly, the development of an instrument capable of evaluating whether vocal health and hygiene habits effectively distinguish individuals with and without voice disorders - when used as a complementary tool within a multidimensional vocal assessment - could provide valuable guidance for speech-language pathologists in the clinical management of patients with dysphonia and individuals at risk of d

Post-traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the descending aorta.

High-energy deceleration injuries of the thoracic aorta are associated with high mortality. But among long term survivors, just 2 %-5 % of traumatic aortic injuries fail initial detection and are discovered later (Pozek et al., 2012 [1]). We present a rare case of pseudoaneurysm of the descending aorta in a female with a history of chest blunt trauma 45 days before who presented with chronic severe cough and vocal hoarseness that was treated with endovascular intervention in our center.

First record of an adult female ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) making a male-specific howl vocalization.

Vocal communication is a critical aspect of social life in group living species. Ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) are one of the most studied lemur species, yet the quantity of male specific vocalizations remains unclear. Howling has previously been described as a male only vocalization. While investigating Duke Lemur Center (DLC: Durham, N.C.) ring-tailed lemurs' responses to novel objects when separated from their group for five minutes, video and audio opportunistically captured a female howling. We sought to determine whether these vocalizations were acoustically similar to male howling or

Partial laryngectomy for glottic cancer after high-dose radiotherapy.

A vertical partial laryngectomy (VPL) for salvage was performed on 25 patients with locally persistent or recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the vocal cord(s) after high-dose radiotherapy at the UCLA Medical Center between 1969 and 1988. Patients were followed for a minimum of 2 years and a median of 4.4 years after VPL. Ninety-six percent of patients remained free of disease. Tumor was controlled in patients with impaired vocal cord mobility and involvement of the contralateral cord or false cord. The actuarial survival rate was 80% at 5 years. There were no serious wound healing problems.

Afferents from vocal motor and respiratory effectors are recruited during vocal production in juvenile songbirds.

Learned behaviors require coordination of diverse sensory inputs with motivational and motor systems. Although mechanisms underlying vocal learning in songbirds have focused primarily on auditory inputs, it is likely that sensory inputs from vocal effectors also provide essential feedback. We investigated the role of somatosensory and respiratory inputs from vocal effectors of juvenile zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) during the stage of sensorimotor integration when they are learning to imitate a previously memorized tutor song. We report that song production induced expression of the imme

Congenital H-type tracheoesophageal fistula: A multicenter review of outcomes in a rare disease.

OBJECTIVE: To perform a multicenter review of outcomes in patients with H-type tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) in order to better understand the incidence and causes of post-operative complications. BACKGROUND: H-type TEF without esophageal atresia (EA) is a rare anomaly with a fundamentally different management algorithm than the more common types of EA/TEF. Outcomes after surgical treatment of H-type TEF are largely unknown, but many authoritative textbooks describe a high incidence of respiratory complications. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective review of all H-type TEF patients treated
