Evaluating High-Intensity Interval-Training Validity Using Critical Power in Rowing.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effectiveness of the 3-minute all-out test (3MT) in rowing for determining critical power (CP) and work capacity above CP (W') to prescribe high-intensity interval training. METHODS: Thirteen physically active adults (7 female) participated. They completed a graded exercise test to determine maximal oxygen consumption (V˙O2max) and heart rate (HR) and a 3MT to estimate CP and W'. Two high-intensity interval-training sessions were prescribed based on CP and W' values: 4 × 3-minute intervals at 60% W' depletion and 3 × 5-minute intervals at 80% W' depletion. Re

High-Intensity Interval Training in Panic Disorder Patients: A Pilot Study.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) may produce strong physiological but also psychological effects within a short period. However, it is questionable if this type of training is applicable and effective in patients with panic disorder (PD) because they are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of exercise. Twelve PD patients performed a 12-day HIIT trial. Every second day, patients performed 10 high-intensive 1-minute intervals at 77% to 95% of their maximum heart rate separated by 1-minute intervals with moderate to low intensity. All patients completed the 12-day training period. PD se

Deep phenotyping of patients with MASLD upon high-intensity interval training.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Exercise is a key component of lifestyle management in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), but neither its therapeutic effect on the active stage of the disease, that is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) nor the mediating mechanisms have been characterized. Therefore, we performed multi-omic phenotyping of patients with MASLD-MASH on an exercise program. METHODS: Fifteen patients with MASLD conducted high-intensity interval training (HIIT) combined with home-based training for 12 weeks. MASLD was evaluated us

High-intensity interval training versus moderate-intensity continuous training within cardiac rehabilitation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Aerobic capacity has been shown to be inversely proportionate to cardiovascular mortality and morbidity and there is growing evidence that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) appears to be more effective than moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in improving cardiorespiratory fitness within the cardiac population. Previously published systematic reviews in cardiovascular disease have neither investigated the effect that the number of weeks of intervention has on cardiorespiratory fitness changes, nor have adverse events been collated. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to undertake

High-intensity interval versus moderate-intensity continuous cycling training in Parkinson's disease: a randomized trial.

Exercise training is recommended to improve the quality of life in those living with Parkinson's disease (PD); however, the optimal prescription to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and disease-related motor symptoms remains unknown. Twenty-nine participants with PD were randomly allocated to either 10 wk of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) (n = 15; 6 female) or moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) (n = 14; 5 female). The primary outcome was the change in maximal oxygen consumption (V̇o2peak). Secondary outcomes included changes in the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (

High-intensity interval training and moderate-intensity continuous training improve hippocampal synaptic plasticity in Alzheimer's disease via differential lactylation.

While both high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) are known to benefit physical health, their comparative effects on cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain unclear. Here, using equal number 3.5 months old male (28 ± 2 g) and female (24.0 ± 1.1 g) 5 × FAD transgenic mice, we demonstrate that HIIT and MICT improve AD pathology and cognitive performance, as evidenced by reduced amyloid-β deposition and enhanced hippocampal synaptic plasticity. Both exercise modalities significantly elevated lactate levels in the blood and hippocamp

Two weeks of moderate-intensity continuous training, but not high-intensity interval training, increases insulin-stimulated intestinal glucose uptake.

Similar to muscles, the intestine is also insulin resistant in obese subjects and subjects with impaired glucose tolerance. Exercise training improves muscle insulin sensitivity, but its effects on intestinal metabolism are not known. We studied the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on intestinal glucose and free fatty acid uptake from circulation in humans. Twenty-eight healthy, middle-aged, sedentary men were randomized for 2 wk of HIIT or MICT. Intestinal insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and fasting free fatty acid uptake f

High intensity interval training as a therapy: Mitophagy restoration in breast cancer.

Recent studies have highlighted the role of mitophagy in tumorigenesis. This study aimed to investigate the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on mitophagy in tumor tissues of mice with breast cancer. Twenty-eight female BALB/c mice were randomly assigned to four groups: Healthy Control (CO), Cancer (CA), Exercise (EX), and Cancer + Exercise (CA + EX). Mammary tumors were induced in the CA and CA + EX groups via 4T1 cell injections. Upon confirmation of tumor formation, the EX and CA + EX groups underwent 8 weeks (40 sessions) of HIIT, comprising 4-10 intervals of running at 80

The physiological impact of high-intensity interval training in octogenarians with comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Declines in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and fat-free mass (FFM) with age are linked to mortality, morbidity and poor quality of life. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been shown to improve CRF and FFM in many groups, but its efficacy in the very old, in whom comorbidities are present is undefined. We aimed to assess the efficacy of and physiological/metabolic responses to HIIT, in a cohort of octogenarians with comorbidities (e.g. hypertension and osteoarthritis). METHODS: Twenty-eight volunteers (18 men, 10 women, 81.2 ± 0.6 years, 27.1 ± 0.6 kg·m-2 ) with American
