A coinfection of severe leptospirosis and scrub typhus in Indian Himalayas.

Scrub typhus and leptospirosis are zoonosis and systemic febrile illnesses with diverse, nonspecific clinical manifestations, and shared risk factors for coinfection. Diagnosis of the coinfection is dependent on laboratory serological tests, which are under used. A coinfection from Uttarakhand Himalayan region is not yet reported. A 25-year-old man from altitude of 2126 feet above sea level presented with fever, myalgia, jaundice, oliguria, mental confusion, and tender hepatomegaly. Investigations revealed leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, impaired liver function tests, renal dysfunction with ne

Associations among cataract prevalence, sunlight hours, and altitude in the Himalayas.

The relationship between cataract prevalence, altitude, and sunlight hours was investigated in a large national probability sample survey of 105 sites in the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal, December 1980 through April 1981. Cataract of senile or unknown etiology was diagnosed by ophthalmologists in 873 of 30,565 full-time life-long residents of survey sites. Simultaneously, the altitude of sites was measured using a standard mountain altimeter. Seasonally adjusted average daily duration of sunlight exposure for each site was calculated by a method which took into account latitude and obstructions

Three hundred and five cases of high altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPO) hospitalised in eastern Himalayan region have been analyzed. Incidence of HAPO was 5.5 per cent. Eighty per cent cases occurred during latter half of the year. Fifty six per cent of cases belonged to the third decade of life. HAPO cases occurred most commonly between the height of 2740 m to 5960 m. Eighty three per cent cases developed symptoms within 72 hours of induction to high altitude and 65.9 per cent suffered from the illness despite complete acclimatization. Breathlessness, headache and cough were the commonest sympt

Ethnomedicinal and ecological status of plants in Garhwal Himalaya, India.

BACKGROUND: The northern part of India harbours a great diversity of medicinal plants due to its distinct geography and ecological marginal conditions. The traditional medical systems of northern India are part of a time tested culture and honored still by people today. These traditional systems have been curing complex disease for more than 3,000 years. With rapidly growing demand for these medicinal plants, most of the plant populations have been depleted, indicating a lack of ecological knowledge among communities using the plants. Thus, an attempt was made in this study to focus on the eco

Evaluating Challenges and Opportunities to Boost Forest Productivity in the Kashmir Himalayas.

Forests are vital ecosystems that sustain biodiversity, regulate climate, and support local livelihoods. However, in the Kashmir Himalayas, forest productivity faces multiple constraints, including financial limitations, population pressure, land-use changes, and political instability. This study employs expert-based assessments and the Garrett ranking method to systematically evaluate the key challenges and opportunities for improving forest resource productivity in the region. Findings reveal that financial limitations (Mean Garrett Score [MGS] 70.80; R1), increasing population pressure (MGS

Spectrum of Pediatric Acute Febrile Encephalopathy in Hilly Areas of Northwestern Himalayas.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The etiological profile of acute febrile encephalopathy (AFE) varies across different geographic areas and in different seasons across the world. Limited literature in children suggests central nervous system (CNS) infections to be the most common cause of AFE in India and developing countries. Most of these studies have been done in the plains of India, and no study has been done in the Himalayan region of northwestern India, where most of the vectors causing AFE in other parts of India, like mosquitoes, are not found. Therefore, this leads to a lacuna in available data on

Phytochemical studies of Jurinea macrocephala roots from Western Himalaya.

Phytochemical investigation of the Jurinea macrocephala roots afforded six compounds namely β-sitosterol (1), lupenone (2), physcion (3), ptiloepoxide (4), 20, 21α-epoxytaraxastan-3β-ol (5) and chlorogenic acid (6). All the compounds were isolated for the first time in roots. The structures of the compounds were established by analysis of their spectroscopic (1H and 13C NMR) and spectrometric (MS) data, as well as by comparison of these with those reported in the literature. Metabolic profiling of chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions were also accomplished using NMR. In NMR analysis, ERETIC

Evaluation of Antimicrobial and Anticancer Activities of Selected Medicinal Plants of Himalayas, Pakistan.

Medicinal plants are known for their diverse use in the traditional medicine of the Himalayan region of Pakistan. The present study is designed to investigate the anticancer and antimicrobial activities of Prunus cornuta and Quercus semicarpifolia. The anticancer activity was performed using cancerous human cell lines (HepG2, Caco-2, A549, MDA-MB-231, and NCI-H1437 carcinoma cells), while the antimicrobial activity was conducted with the agar-well diffusion method. Furthermore, toxicity studies were performed on alveolar and renal primary epithelial cells. Initially, different extracts we

Revealing four decades of snow cover dynamics in the Hindu Kush Himalaya.

Knowledge about the distribution and dynamics of seasonal snow cover (SSC) is of high importance for climate studies, hydrology or hazards assessment. SSC varies considerably across the Hindu Kush Himalaya both in space and time. Previous studies focused on regional investigations or the influence of snow melt on the local hydrological system. Here, we present a systematic assessment of metrics to evaluate SSC dynamics for the entire HKH at regional and basin scale based on AVHRR GAC data at a 0.05° spatial and daily temporal resolution. Our findings are based on a unique four-decade satellite

A rare case report of low-grade endometrial sarcoma: A surgical tale from Himalayas.

INTRODUCTION: In the context of female genital tract malignancy, uterine sarcoma is considered the rarest form of the disease. Despite the inert nature of low-grade endometrial sarcoma, they must be meticulously diagnosed on time, with an exact grading of the severity and staging of the disease, which further guides the treatment modality and prognosis. CASE SUMMARY: A married Asian female without any significant past medical and surgical history complained of abdominal distension and discomfort, which was progressive in nature, for which a radiological assessment was made that showed feature

Rising visceral leishmaniasis in Holy Himalayas (Uttarakhand, India) - A cross-sectional hospital-based study.

BACKGROUND: Apart from the rarity of the visceral leishmaniasis (VL) cases in high altitude (>2000 ft), the combination triad of VL, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) syndrome, and Himalayas is rarely being reported. Here, we studied the triad in the Himalayan region, attending a single tertiary care hospital over a period of 2 years. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional analysis of case records of seven confirmed VL patients. A systematic master chart review analyzed the demographic, clinical, laboratory, treatment, and outcome details of these patients. RESULTS: These cases were

Quantification of trace metal contamination and ecological risks in river sediments of the Himalaya.

Riverbed mining exerts significant pressure on Himalayan river systems, yet its influence on trace metal dynamics in sediments remains poorly understood across elevation gradients. This study quantifies the concentration and ecological risk of six trace metals Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, and Pb in surface sediments from the Chandra River (Upper Himalayas), Beas River (Middle Himalayas), and Chakki Khad (Lower Himalayas), Himachal Pradesh, India. Ten surface sediment samples were collected from each river and evaluated using pollution indices (Igeo, PINemerow, PLI, PERI, MERMQ, and MEC), sediment quali

Brown carbon is a significant contributor to aerosol climate forcing in the northwestern Himalayas.

We report here the climate-relevant optical properties and sources of water and organic-extractable brown carbon (BrCaq and BrCme) and its relative importance as a climate forcing agent in the northwestern (NW) Himalayan midlands (1044 m amsl). Diagnostic ratios coupled with trajectory and firespot-based analysis suggested that while biomass burning (BB) impacts are consistent in this region, a very significant influence is also exerted by the fossil fuel (FF)-dominated Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) outflow. BrC absorption peaked in winter, with ∼3-5 times enrichment in its absorption coefficient
