Neuroimaging studies of the hippocampus in schizophrenia.

Three neuroimaging techniques, morphometric neuroimaging, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and functional neuroimaging, have provided evidence for abnormal hippocampal structure and function in schizophrenia. Hippocampal volume reduction is now one of the most consistent structural abnormalities found in schizophrenia: it is present at the onset of the illness and, to a lesser degree, in first-degree relatives of schizophrenic probands. Decreased levels of N-acetyl-aspartate point towards a cellular basis of such volume changes. Functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated abnormal levels

Magnetic material in the human hippocampus.

Magnetic analyses of hippocampal material from deceased normal and epileptic subjects, and from the surgically removed epileptogenic zone of a living patient have been carried out. All had magnetic characteristics similar to those reported for other parts of the brain [6]. These characteristics along with low temperature analysis indicate that the magnetic material is present in a wide range of grain sizes. The low temperature analysis also revealed the presence of magnetite through manifestation of its low temperature transition. The wide range of grain sizes is similar to magnetite produced

Actions of enprofylline in the rat hippocampus.

Enprofylline is a novel xanthine with a low adenosine antagonistic potency, but with a good bronchodilator activity. In order to further elucidate its central nervous actions we have studied its effects in the rat hippocampus, both electrophysiologically and biochemically. Adenosine was found to depress evoked field excitatory post-synaptic potentials (EPSPs) in the rat hippocampus. The effect of adenosine was antagonized by theophylline but not by enprofylline. Both xanthines caused a slight increase per se of the field EPSP amplitude. Cyclic AMP accumulation in the rat hippocampus was stimul

Anorexia and the hippocampus: A case report.

Eating disorders have been shown to be associated with epilepsy, typically associated with the temporal lobe and usually of non-dominant hemisphere origin. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman with drug resistant epilepsy, localized to the dominant left hippocampus. She experienced an increasing frequency of seizures over a two-year period associated with loss of appetite and substantial weight loss independent of antiseizure medication changes. Extensive workup eliminated gastrointestinal and paraneoplastic etiologies. There was no history of psychiatric illness, including anorexia nervo

Morphological imaging of the hippocampus in epilepsy.

The hippocampus is a structure frequently involved in epilepsy, especially in partial drug-resistant forms. In addition, some hippocampal pathologies are associated with specific types of epilepsy presenting specific clinical courses and requiring specific treatments. Considering these major implications for treatment, morphological investigations of the hippocampus are crucial for epileptic patients. Indeed, discovery of hippocampal sclerosis may (depending on the clinical and electrophysiological findings) lead to the diagnosis of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). If the diagnosis of MTL

Semantic memory and the human hippocampus.

It has been unclear whether the hippocampus is uniquely important for episodic memory (memory for events that are specific to time and place) or whether the hippocampus is also important for learning and remembering facts (semantic memory). In two studies, we assessed the capacity for semantic memory in patients with bilateral damage thought to be restricted primarily to the hippocampal region who developed memory impairment at a known time. Since the onset of their memory impairment, the patients have acquired less factual knowledge than controls. The patients also exhibit temporally limited

[The role for the hippocampus in the biorhythmical behavior].

The hippocampus as a important limbic structure has polyfunction properties among which take place chronotropic activity. It is showed in instability of different biological rhythms that provided for adaptation of organism to changing environment conditions. Chronotropic activity may be depenede from reciprocal connections of the hippocampus with brain rhythmorganizing structures (suprachiasmatic nuclei of hypothalamus and pineal gland). Increase of hippocampal excitability after chronic stress are produce disorganization of some rhythmic processes and followed neurosis or psychical depression

The hippocampus in aging and Alzheimer's disease.

The role of imaging in the evaluation of neurodegenerative disorders is summarized. The primary role of imaging is to exclude potentially treatable disorders such as meningioma, extracerebral hematoma, Wernicke's disease, and hypothyroidism. Atrophic changes dominate in the hippocampal region on Alzheimer's disease versus the anterior, frontal, and temporal lobes in Pick's disease. Signal hypointensity in the putamen on T2-weighted spin-echo images favors poorly drug-responsive Parkinson's disease whereas putaminal hyperintensity is observed with Creutzfeldt-Jacob, Wilson's, and Leigh's diseas

Unilateral optogenetic kindling of hippocampus leads to more severe impairments of the inhibitory signaling in the contralateral hippocampus.

The kindling model has been used extensively by researchers to study the neurobiology of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) due to its capacity to induce intensification of seizures by the progressive recruitment of additional neuronal clusters into epileptogenic networks. We applied repetitive focal optogenetic activation of putative excitatory neurons in the dorsal CA1 area of the hippocampus of mice to investigate the role of inhibitory signaling during this process. This experimental protocol resulted in a kindling phenotype that was maintained for 2 weeks after the animals were fully kindled. A

Hippocampus as comparator: role of the two input and two output systems of the hippocampus in selection and registration of information.

Processing of multimodal sensory information by the morphological subdivisions of the hippocampus and its input and output structures was investigated in unanesthetized rabbits by extracellular recording of neuronal activity. Analysis shows principal differences between CA3 neurons with uniform multimodal, mainly inhibitory, rapidly habituating sensory responses, and CA1-subicular neurons, substantial parts of which have phasic reactions and patterned on-responses, depending on the characteristics of the stimuli. These differences result from the organization of the afferent inputs to CA1 and

A population code for semantics in human hippocampus.

Motivated by the successes of large language models (LLMs), we hypothesized that semantic information in the brain may be expressed in distributed patterns of neural activity. We recorded responses of hippocampal neurons while individuals listened to narrative speech. Here, using an encoding model approach, we find robust encoding of semantics, even after controlling for phonemics and grammar. Individual words had complex selectivities that included multiple words in multiple semantic categories. Similar to embedding vectors in LLMs, distance between neural population responses correlated with

The hippocampus as a small-world cognitive map.

When a mouse perceives a hawk's shadow, it may have only seconds to decide where to run, yet the safest refuge is often neither visible nor nearby. To survive, it must search its cognitive map quickly enough to choose among many possibilities, and accurately enough to avoid dead ends and hazards along the way, all while what counts as "safe" changes as paths, refuges, and threats shift with time. This scenario highlights a core design problem: cognitive maps must preserve fine local structure for reliable action, yet remain globally searchable so that distant, useful solutions can be found eff

Interpretation of the Intracranial Electroencephalogram of the Human Hippocampus.

Understanding and discriminating the normal and abnormal elements of the intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) is essential in decision-making for epilepsy surgery. The hippocampus is widely acknowledged as a key structure in decision-making processes for surgical treatment in temporal lobe epilepsy and epilepsies that involve the mesial temporal structures. This review will provide a summary of the current state of our knowledge and understanding regarding normal and abnormal features of the iEEG of the human hippocampus.

Interactions between the hippocampus and the auditory pathway.

Increasing evidence has shown that noise overexposure could lead to impaired hippocampal function. Hippocampal alteration is also observed in several auditory deficits, including hearing loss, and tinnitus. Therefore, the functions of hearing and cognition interact with each other. Here, we summarize the evidence that noise affects the hippocampus from aspects of behavior, neurogenesis, ultrastructure, neurotransmission, other biomarkers, and electrophysiology. We also address hippocampal alterations in auditory disorders, including hearing loss and tinnitus. Based on the current state of the

Interaction of Taste and Place Coding in the Hippocampus.

An animal's survival depends on finding food and the memory of food and contexts are often linked. Given that the hippocampus is required for spatial and contextual memory, it is reasonable to expect related coding of space and food stimuli in hippocampal neurons. However, relatively little is known about how the hippocampus responds to tastes, the most central sensory property of food. In this study, we examined the taste-evoked responses and spatial firing properties of single units in the dorsal CA1 hippocampal region as male rats received a battery of taste stimuli differing in both chemic

[Protein-Protein Interactions of Huntingtin in the Hippocampus].

Huntingtin (HTT) occurs in the neuronal cytoplasm and can interact with structural elements of synapses. Huntington's disease (HD) results from pathological expansion of a polyglutamine stretch in the HTT molecule, being probably associated with aberrant protein-protein interactions. The pathogenetic mechanism is still incompletely understood. Alterations of the synaptic structure and plasticity in the hippocampus are observed in early HD. The objective of the study was to theoretically evaluate the HTT contribution to changes in synaptic plasticity by integrating the available experimental da

Associative learning, the hippocampus, and nicotine addiction.

The abuse liability of nicotine is comparable to or greater than that of a variety of addictive substances. However, the reinforcing and/or rewarding properties of addictive substances other than nicotine far outweigh the reinforcing and/or rewarding effects associated with nicotine use. These data suggest that, in addition to the intrinsic reinforcing effects of nicotine, other factors may contribute to nicotine addiction. One such factor is associative learning, or rather, the ability of nicotine to alter learning and memory processes that may underlie addiction. The present paper presents a

Context fear learning in the absence of the hippocampus.

Lesions of the rodent hippocampus invariably abolish context fear memories formed in the recent past but do not always prevent new learning. To better understand this discrepancy, we thoroughly examined the acquisition of context fear in rats with pretraining excitotoxic lesions of the dorsal hippocampus. In the first experiment, animals received a shock immediately after placement in the context or after variable delays. Immediate shock produced no context fear learning in lesioned rats or controls. In contrast, delayed shock produced robust context fear learning in both groups. The absence o

Growth points in research on memory and hippocampus.

We present an overview of two of our on-going projects relating processes in the hippocampus to memory. We are trying to understand why retrograde amnesia occurs after damage to the hippocampus. Our experiments establish the generality of several new retrograde amnesia phenomena that are at odds with the consensus view of the role of the hippocampus in memory. We show in many memory tasks that complete damage to the hippocampus produces retrograde amnesia that is equivalent for recent and remote memories. Retrograde amnesia affects a much wider range of memory tasks than anterograde amnesia. N
