PURPOSE: I analyzed mentions of treatment in the Hippocratic Collection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: I examined quantitatively mentions of treatments in the Hippocratic Collection (Roeb edition, Otsuki edition, and Kon edition) to compare preferences for therapy between the Kos and Knidos schools.
RESULTS: Treatments, mentioned in 2,687 passages, were medical in 2,319 (86%), and surgical in 368 (14%). These 2,687 descriptions included 1,023 (38%) from the Kos, 1,261 (47%) from the Knidos school, and 403 (15%) from unspecified schools. Of the 2,319 descriptions of medical treatment, 560 (24%) refe

This paper approaches narrative criminology through the visual art produced by Carey Grayson prior to his execution by nitrogen gas in the state of Alabama in 2024. The art satirically represents Dr. Joseph Antognini, an anesthesiologist who testifies as an expert witness in favor of the safety of nitrogen gas as a method of execution. When studied through the lens of narrative sequencing and restorying, the satirical portraits by Grayson raise important ethical questions about the increasing involvement of medical professionals in executions, which undermines the Hippocratic oath these profes

For more than two decades, classes on "professionalism" have been the dominant platform for the non-technical socialization of medical students. It thus subsumes elements of previous foundation courses in bioethics and "medicine and society" in defining the appropriate relation between practitioners, patients, and society-at-large. Despite its importance, there is, however, no clear definition of what "professionalism" entails or the manner in which it serves various purported goals. This essay reviews, first, the historical role of the vocational practitioner in society, and second, the intro

ECT is an effective treatment for severe mental disorders, including major depression, delusional depression, bipolar disorder, manic delirium, schizophrenia, malignant catatonia, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. It reduces suicidality, melancholia, catatonia, aggression, and excitement. Age is no barrier, with ECT successful in children, adolescents, and the old-old. It is effective when other treatments have failed. It is a safe treatment. The mortality rate is less than that associated with normal pregnancies. The fractures, panic, and amnesia that marked early treatments have now been m

The history of rhinoplasty is absolutely fascinating. It is replete with mysterious practices, intrigue, and imaginative thoughts. If necessity is the mother of invention, then sex, crimes, and punishment lay a legitimate claim to being the mother of rhinoplasty. The history of rhinoplasty is a global saga spanning the millennia. Practitioners of the art and science have included those demonstrating the most admirable traits espoused in the Hippocratic Oath, as well as those to whom the word "charlatan" might more aptly be applied. The truth of a story is illustrated in its telling, and we hav

It is important for surgeons to have insight into themselves, their life stories, and the rationales they use to convince themselves that their actions are unselfish and well motivated. The battle between Philanthropia and Philotechnica was recognized by Hippocrates and is still a source of internal strife for many surgeons: the need to perform an operation that they are poorly equipped to do offset against the knowledge that it could be better done by someone else. In the treatment or referral for treatment of children with craniosynostosis and craniofacial syndromes, appropriate referrals ar

The sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship is deeply embedded in tradition - the Hippocratic oath, medical ethics, professional codes of conduct, and legislation - all of which are being disrupted by big data and 'artificial' intelligence (AI). The transition from paper-based records to electronic health records, wearables, mobile health applications and mobile phone data has created new opportunities to scale up data collection. Databases of unimaginable magnitude can be harnessed to develop algorithms for AI and to refine machine learning. Complex neural networks now lie at the core of

Eligibility assessment of a potential candidate for allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is a complex yet vital component of pretransplant evaluation. Although no formal standardized consensus exists to guide this process, transplant centers follow institutional standard operating procedures and parameters to approve candidacy of an individual patient. Consideration for allo-HCT is dependent on a myriad of interrelated factors, including disease-related (eg, appropriate indication, disease status, prior therapies), patient-related (eg, age, functional status, frailty, comor

Human pluripotent stem cells are the foundations of regenerative medicine. However, the worst possible complication of using pluripotent stem cells in therapy could be iatrogenic cancerogenesis. Nevertheless, despite the rapid progress in the development of new techniques for induction of pluripotency and for directed differentiation, risks of cancerogenic transformation of therapeutically implanted pluripotent stem cells still persist. 'Above all, do no harm', as quoted from the Hippocratic Oath, is our ultimate creed. Therefore, the primary goal in designing any therapeutic regimes involving

This paper relates the neglected history of an idealistic, secret medical fraternity which existed briefly in Lexington, Kentucky, during the first half of the 19th century. It was created for students in the Medical Department at Transylvania University, the fifth US medical school, founded in 1799. One goal of the fraternity was to counter the widespread dissension and often violent quarrels among doctors that characterized American medicine of that period. And to that end, it was among the first to promote Thomas Percival's code of medical ethics in this country. Branches of the fraternity

INTRODUCTION: The Tuskegee Syphilis Study, a dark chapter in medical history, still resonates today. The Tuskegee Study, conducted between 1932 and 1972 by the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is the longest controversial study performed in the U.S. Peter Buxtun, an epidemiologist at the USPHS, raised ethical concerns about the study and eventually leaked the story to the press, leading to the study's termination. Buxtun has died at the age of 86. It is imperative to remember this study and the heroic actions of Buxtun to expose this ethi

AIM: This phenomenological study was aimed at exploring principal physicians' (participants') experience of attending to COPD patients and motivating their self-management, in light of the GOLD clinical guidelines of COPD therapy.
METHODS: Interviews were conducted with nine physicians, who had referred patients to PR, five general practitioners (GPs) and four lung specialists (LSs). The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed through a process of deconstruction and reconstruction.
RESULTS: The participants experienced several ethical dilemmas in being principal physicians of COP

"Conscience clauses" define conscience as "religious beliefs" or "moral convictions," and they come up, therefore, usually in relation to women's reproductive rights. This article argues that conscience is better understood as a feeling of integrity, rightness, and self, and that we need it especially now, as huge corporations take over health care. After an illustrative story, the author reviews the history of patients' rights and also the health-care consumer movement, which introduced the idea that health care is a commodity, and the doctor, therefore, simply a tradesman, whose duty is to p

BACKGROUND: Peaceful protests and strikes are a basic human right as stated in the United Nations' universal declaration on human rights. But for doctors, their proximity to life and death and the social contract between a doctor and a patient are stated as the reasons why doctors are valued more than the ordinary beings. In Pakistan, strikes by doctors were carried out to protest against lack of service structure, security and low pay. This paper discusses the moral and ethical concerns pertaining to the strikes by medical doctors in the context of Pakistan. The author has carefully tried to

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a new infectious disease that emerged in mid- November 2002 in Guangdong, southern China. The global pandemic began in late February 2003 in Hong Kong. By the time SARS was declared contained on 5 July 2003 by the World Health Organization (WHO), it had afflicted 8096 patients in 29 countries. No other disease had had such a phenomenal impact on healthcare workers (HCWs), who formed about 21% of SARS patients. In Vietnam, Canada and Singapore, HCWs accounted for 57%, 43% and 41% of SAR patients, respectively. At the beginning of the outbreak, there w

From 1915 [corrected], the first time a flight surgeon participated in an aeromedical evacuation, to the present, the role has become more fundamental by working in wars and operations, experiencing search and rescue aeromedical evacuations from mass accidents or motor accidents, treating seriously ill individuals, and caring for wounded victims of attacks either at the scene or at the hospital. The improvements in cognitive and technological standards of medical science and in the education available have contributed in upgrading the role of flight surgeons; however, their presence in flight
