BACKGROUND: Life's Essential 8 (LE8) is a new metric to define cardiovascular health. We aimed to describe LE8 among Hispanics/Latinos and its association with incident hypertension.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The HCHS/SOL (Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos) is a study of Hispanic/Latino adults aged 18 to 74 years from 4 US communities. At visit 1 (2008-2011), information on behavioral and clinical factors (diet, smoking status, physical activity, sleep duration, body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, fasting glucose, and medication use) were measured and used to estimate an L

BACKGROUND: Despite variations in the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and related risk factors among US Hispanic/Latino adults of diverse backgrounds, there is little information on whether disparities exist in the use of medications for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. We examined the prevalence of statin and aspirin use among diverse US Hispanic/Latino adults at high cardiovascular risk.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A multicenter population-based study, the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study Of Latinos, included a total of 16 415 participants of Mexican, Puert

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), a major independent cardiovascular risk factor, is the leading cause of death among US groups, including Hispanic and Latino adults. LVH commonly occurs in the setting of hypertension, which may be influenced by psychological factors such as depression and anxiety.
METHODS: HCHS/SOL (Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos) participants, an ongoing population-based cohort study of Hispanic and Latino adults, completed visit 1 in 2008 through 2011 and visit 2 in 2014 through 2017. Depression and trait anxiety symptoms were self-reported

PURPOSE: Metabolic syndrome (MetS), the clustering of several risk factors for cardiovascular disease, is highly prevalent in Hispanics/Latinos. We tested whether all components significantly loaded on the syndrome in Hispanics/Latinos and whether their contribution differed by sex and Hispanic ancestry. We also examined associations of MetS with prevalent diabetes and coronary heart disease in Hispanics/Latinos.
METHODS: Data were obtained from a population-based cohort of n = 15,823 participants in the HCHS/SOL study who self-identified as being of Central American, Cuban, Dominican, Mexica

BACKGROUND: All major Hispanic/Latino groups in the United States have a high prevalence of obesity, which is often severe. Little is known about cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among those at very high levels of body mass index (BMI).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Among US Hispanic men (N=6547) and women (N=9797), we described gradients across the range of BMI and age in CVD risk factors including hypertension, serum lipids, diabetes, and C-reactive protein. Sex differences in CVD risk factor prevalences were determined at each level of BMI, after adjustment for age and other demographic an

This study provides critical insights into the pervasive structural violence and compounded stress experienced by Hispanic/Latino caregivers, a population disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities that can adversely affect overall well-being. We analyzed data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Youth (n = 458) to identify structural violence exposure patterns among Hispanic/Latino caregivers/parents and examine how these patterns vary by birthplace and U.S. residency duration. Structural violence exposure was measured using six domains: chronic stress, perceived

Despite experiencing health inequities, less is known about neighborhood environments and physical activity among Hispanic/Latino adults compared to other populations. We investigated this topic in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). Hispanic/Latino adults in the San Diego, California area of the U.S. completed measures of overall moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) via accelerometry and domain-specific MVPA via questionnaire at Visits 1 (2008-2011; n = 4086) and 2 (2014-2017; n = 1776), ~6 years apart. 800-m home neighborhood buffers were used to create

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine what factors, including acculturation (language and social contact preferences), were associated with self-perceived hearing handicap among adults from Hispanic/Latino background. We utilized the Aday-Andersen behavioral model of health services utilization to frame our hypotheses that predisposing characteristics (age, sex, education, city of residence, Hispanic/Latino background, and acculturation), enabling resources (annual income and current health insurance coverage), and need (measured hearing loss and self-reported hearing loss) would be related to cl

IMPORTANCE: The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in the US is highest among Hispanic/Latino individuals. Their risk of developing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with fibrosis, cirrhosis with progression to hepatocellular carcinoma and need for liver transplant, and death is similarly elevated.
OBSERVATIONS: The Hispanic/Latino population is the fastest-growing ethnic group in the US, and their annual increase in MASLD prevalence outpaces other ethnic groups. Cardiometabolic and genetic risk factors are highly prevalent amo

Objectives. To identify sociodemographic shifts among unsheltered Latino people experiencing homelessness (PEH) between 2020-2022. Methods. We examined differences in characteristics reported in demographic surveys for Latino PEH older than 25 years from 2020 (n = 1215) and 2022 (n = 1395) in Los Angeles County, California, using weighted bivariate χ2 tests. Results. From 2020 to 2022, there was a 25% increase in the number of unsheltered Latino individuals. The share of Latino PEH who were unemployed increased (57% to 67%). The increase in homelessness occurred largely among individuals livin

BACKGROUND: Most meatpacking workers have pain affecting their back, arms, and/or wrists from work-related repetitive motions, forceful exertion, and awkward positioning. Chronic musculoskeletal pain is associated with obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Hispanic/Latino workers in the meatpacking industry are a vulnerable population; limited English, lack of health insurance, and fear of deportation often deter them from seeking care where preventable cardiovascular risks might be detected. The purpose of this study was to examine perceived health and actual card

Global longitudinal strain (GLS) is a sensitive measure for detecting early cardiac dysfunction, but prone to variability by age, race/ethnicity, and sex. To date, GLS has not been described in Hispanics/Latinos, nor has GLS been associated with heart failure risk factors. Data from the Echocardiographic-Study of Latinos, a population-based study of Hispanics/Latinos in the United States, was used. A reference healthy sample was used to define the 95th-percentile lower limit of normal GLS value of -14.2% which was applied to the target population to describe the distribution of GLS across age,

BACKGROUND: The APOE ε4 allele has weaker association with ADRD outcomes in Hispanic/Latino populations compared to non-Hispanic White and East Asian populations.
METHODS: We used whole-genome sequencing data from 13,025 Hispanic/Latino adults to infer population groups (clusters) from short DNA sequences at the APOE gene region. We estimated the associations between these clusters and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and age-adjusted significant cognitive decline assessed via the Study of Latinos-Investigation of Neurocognitive Aging (SOL-INCA) study (n = 5334). We compared these associations

IMPORTANCE: Visual impairment (VI) affects approximately 7 million individuals in the US and is associated with adverse outcomes; cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and nonmedical drivers of health (NMDOH) may contribute. Prior research in Mexican American individuals suggested high VI prevalence, but data across more diverse US Hispanic/Latino populations remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate VI prevalence and assess its associations with CVD risk factors in Hispanic/Latino adults in the US.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from SOL Ojos, a

“Hispanic” and “Latino” (also known as Mestizo) describe a diverse racial and ethnic group, with a range of cultures, languages, and biological ancestry. It includes individuals of Mexican, Central-to-South American, and Spanish-Caribbean (eg, Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Dominican) descent.1 Individuals of Hispanic/Latino race and ethnicity represent a heterogenous group of people with different skin tones and Fitzpatrick phototypes. Hispanic/Latinos are the fastest growing population in the United States (US) - projected to increase from 55 million in 2014 to 119 million

Previous research suggests that Spanish-speaking parents and residents of areas with large Hispanic and Latino populations are likely to underutilize the assistance that is available through poison control centers (PCCs). In order to examine any real and perceived barriers to utilization of the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System (NJPIES), the only poison control center in the state, an intercept survey was conducted with self-identified Hispanics/Latinos at Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) centers and in nearby grocery stores, bus stops, and public laundromats. Only 38% of the

OBJECTIVES: The landmark Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) enrolled N = 16,415 Hispanic/Latino adults (2008-2011) who have been followed for 12-16 years, through 2024. HCHS/SOL identified high rates of cardiovascular risk factors in the target population, with significant variability by Hispanic/Latino heritage (Central American, Cuban, Dominican, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and South American). In the current study, we reviewed the evidence from HCHS/SOL concerning the social, psychological, and cultural dimensions of cardiovascular health (CVH).

INTRODUCTION: Better cardiovascular health (CVH) is associated with better cognitive function, but limited data exist on its association with cerebrovascular disease (CVD) burden using the Life's Essential 8 (LE8) metric, particularly among Hispanic/Latino adults.
METHODS: LE8 scores (range: 0 to 100) were calculated at baseline (2008 to 2011). Brain magnetic resonance imaging volumetric outcomes (2017 to 2022) included cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) burden (infarcts, cerebral microbleeds, high white matter hyperintensity [WMH] burden, enlarged perivascular spaces), gray matter (GM), an
