Extradural hematoma management: A case-control study with historical controls reassessing the 'zero mortality' goal.

INTRODUCTION: Extradural hematoma (EDH) remains a significant cause of mortality following traumatic brain injury (TBI), although fatality rates have declined. This study examines whether improvements in a regional trauma and neurosurgical care system over four decades have enabled the achievement of the long-standing goal of "zero mortality" in surgically treated EDH. RESEARCH QUESTION: Has the evolution of a regional trauma and neurosurgical care system over four decades reduced mortality and moved towards the 'zero mortality' goal in surgically treated extradural hematomas? An analysis of the use of historical control data in the assessment of regulatory pesticide toxicity studies.

The concurrent control group is the most important reference for the interpretation of toxicity studies. However, pooled information on control animals from independent studies, i.e., historical control data (HCD), is also used for the interpretation of results. Currently, an overview on actual HCD use in regulatory toxicology is lacking. Therefore, we evaluated the HCD use of the Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues from 2004 to 2021 and compared it with recommendations in regulatory guidelines and in the literature. We found that HCD was used routinely and exclusively to avoid potenti

Lamotrigine XR conversion to monotherapy: first study using a historical control group.

The efficacy and safety of lamotrigine extended-release tablets (LTG XR) as monotherapy for partial seizures were evaluated using the conversion-to-monotherapy design, and historical data as the control. This methodology was recently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, and this study is the first historical control design in epilepsy to complete enrollment. Patients ≥13 years old with uncontrolled partial epilepsy receiving monotherapy with valproate or a noninducing antiepileptic drug were converted to once-daily LTG XR (250 mg or 300 mg) as monotherapy and were follow

How does an historic control study of a surgical procedure compare with the "gold standard"?

PURPOSE: It has been suggested that nonrandomized studies of interventions can neither discriminate between the effect of an intervention and that of bias nor accurately estimate the magnitude of measured effects. This study was designed to compare the results of an historic control study of a surgical procedure with those of a subsequent randomized control trial conducted under similar circumstances. METHODS: The results of an historic control study and a randomized, controlled trial of the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic rectopexy for rectal prolapse that were conducted 17 months apart

Pyrocardan Implant Arthroplasty for Carpometacarpal Osteoarthritis of the Thumb: A Comparative Study with a Historical Control Group.

Background  New and improved surgical techniques are warranted to treat osteoarthritis of the thumb carpometacarpal joint (CMC-1). The Pyrocardan implant yields striking results but only few series exist, making the evidence scarce. Purpose  The aim of this study was to conduct a prospective series using the Pyrocardan implant. Methods  We compared the outcomes to a matched historical control group of patients operated on with ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition. The hypothesis was that the Pyrocardan implant would yield better patient-reported outcomes as well as the procedure wo

Adjunctive Corticosteroids for Lyme Neuroborreliosis Peripheral Facial Palsy-A Prospective Study With Historical Controls.

BACKGROUND: Lyme neuroborreliosis peripheral facial palsy (LNB PFP) and idiopathic PFP, Bell's palsy (BP), are the most common causes of facial palsy in borrelia-endemic areas and are clinically similar. Early treatment with corticosteroids has been shown to be effective in Bell's palsy, and antibiotics improve the outcome in LNB. However, there is a lack of knowledge on how the addition of corticosteroids to standard antibiotic treatment affects the outcome in LNB PFP. METHODS: This prospective, open trial with historical controls was conducted at 2 large hospitals in western Sweden between

The Use and Misuse of Historical Controls in Regulatory Toxicology: Lessons from the CLARITY-BPA Study.

For many endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including Bisphenol A (BPA), animal studies show that environmentally relevant exposures cause harm; human studies are consistent with these findings. Yet, regulatory agencies charged with protecting public health continue to conclude that human exposures to these EDCs pose no risk. One reason for the disconnect between the scientific consensus on EDCs in the endocrinology community and the failure to act in the regulatory community is the dependence of the latter on so-called "guideline studies" to evaluate hazards, and the inability to incorpora

Advancing the management and control of typhoid fever: a review of the historical role of human challenge studies.

Typhoid infection causes considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in settings where lack of clean water and inadequate sanitation facilitate disease spread through faecal-oral transmission. Improved understanding of the pathogenesis, immune control and microbiology of Salmonella Typhi infection can help accelerate the development of improved vaccines and diagnostic tests necessary for disease control. S. Typhi is a human-restricted pathogen; therefore animal models are limited in their relevance to human infection. During the latter half of the 20th century, induced human i

Renal cell carcinoma and thiazide use: a historical, case-control study (California, USA).

Renal cell carcinoma has been linked to hypertension and antihypertensive medications. We investigated the association between renal cell carcinoma and the use of thiazide in a case-control study of 167 men and 90 women. Subjects were members of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in northern California (United States) who had taken a multiphasic health check-up from 1964 through 1988 and who were evaluated for cancer until the end of 1989. Control subjects received the same check-up, were matched by gender, year of check-up, and age at check-up, and had to be in the health plan until t

Pregnancy outcome after illegal induced abortion in Nigeria: a retrospective controlled historical study.

The effect of illegal abortion on subsequent reproduction was studied in 46 Nigerian women who gave a history of illegal termination of pregnancy. There was a statistically significant increase in the incidences of premature rupture of membranes, premature labour and low birth weight when compared to 53 primigravida who gave no such history of abortion. The perinatal mortality was also significantly higher in the abortion group. In contrast, pre-eclampsia was less common in the abortion group. These findings indicate that illegal abortion has adverse effects on pregnancy outcome in Nigerian wo

Elective colorectal surgery without bowel preparation: a historical control and case-matched study.

BACKGROUND: Although full bowel preparation, including mechanical washout and non-absorbable antibiotherapy, has been considered for decades as a prerequisite to any elective colorectal surgery, recent literature has suggested that this habit was perhaps unjustified. The aim of this study was to assess the safety of ileocolic, colocolic and colorectal anastomosis in the absence of pre-operative mechanical bowel preparation. METHODS: During a 1-year period, 59 consecutive patients underwent elective colorectal surgery with ileocolic, colocolic or colorectal anastomosis without any pre-operativ

Effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acid administration on completion rate of adjuvant chemotherapy for biliary tract cancer: study protocol for a single-centre, open-label, single-arm, historically controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Multimodal treatment prolongs the survival of patients with biliary tract cancer (BTC). However, the chemotherapy choices for this disease are few, and completing each chemotherapy session is important. Adjuvant chemotherapy has been attempted for BTC, but has only had a 75% completion rate. Body weight loss and cholangitis are reasons for the interruption of chemotherapy. Previous reports suggested that nutritional intervention with omega-3 fatty acids maintained body weight and improved the completion rate for chemotherapy. Moreover, omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammator

Impact of surgical care pathways on efficiency and outcomes in orthopedic operating rooms: a historical control study.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of surgical care pathways (CP) on efficiency and patient outcomes in orthopedic operating rooms (OR) is unclear, and we aim to optimize nursing strategies and enhance service quality. METHODS: From July 2019 to June 2024, 3,836 patients undergoing orthopedic surgery at a single Grade 3 Chinese hospital were retrospectively analyzed and divided into two equal groups, with or without CP (1,918 patients in each group). The effectiveness of CP was assessed by comparing surgical site infection (SSI) rates, pathogens, OR turnover times, and patient satisfaction. Statistical an

Sagittal alignment of the spine and lumbar disc herniation in young adults: A historical, case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: This study hypothesizes that the spinopelvic sagittal alignment can influence the development of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). To investigate this relationship, the spinopelvic data of surgical LDH patients was compared to that of a healthy historical control group. METHODS: The spinopelvic data of LDH patients aged 15-45 years, undergoing herniated disc surgery (L4-L5/L5-S1) from 2015 to 2019, was compared to that from healthy controls reported by Roussouly et al. Cardiovascular and renal complications to postsurgical hypoparathyroidism: a Danish nationwide controlled historic follow-up study.

We aimed to identify all patients with postsurgical hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) and to evaluate their risks of renal complications and cardiovascular disease in relation to their disease and its treatment. We identified possible patients through the Danish National Patient Registry and a prescription database. Case status was adjudicated by review of individual patients' hospital records. For each patient with postsurgical HypoPT due to surgery for nonmalignant diseases between 1988 and 2012, three age-matched (± 2 years) and gender-matched controls were selected from the general background po
