Harvey's Story.

Harvey Jules Karten passed away on July 15, 2024. With his passing, the world lost a remarkable and energetic man who had made major contributions to neuroscience, in particular, resetting our understanding of the evolution of the forebrain and the evolution of intelligence. He left behind a legion of loyal colleagues with whom he had collaborated and shared ideas, students he had inspired and trained, and non-neuroscientist friends he had made in the passionate pursuit of his hobbies-sailing, skiing, and hiking.

[Radiotherapy for non-tumoral disorders : a brief history and indications in 2024].

Radiotherapy for non-tumoral disorders has a long history. Lack of high-level evidence, therapeutic alternatives and fear of side effects (particularly radiation-induced cancer) reduced some indications to a trickle during the second half of the 20th century. Others were logically abandoned. There are two exceptions to this trend. On the one hand, some Central European countries (Germany in particular) still use radiotherapy regularly for diseases such as osteoarthritis, plantar fasciitis, chronic tendinopathies, Dupuytren's disease, etc. On the other hand, the development of stereotactic abla

A life in academia: My career in brief.

In this article I have summarized some of the main trends and topics of my research career, spanning a time period of 50 years, from its start as a master student at the Department of Psychology, University of Uppsala, Sweden to seeing the end of a long career, now at the University of Bergen, Norway. This journey has, apart from having been a journey across various disciplines and topics in experimental psychology, psychophysiology and neuropsychology, functional neuroimaging and cognitive neuroscience, also been a social class journey for me personally. I describe my academic career from my

Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition present in 2-4% of the population. Fibromyalgia consists of widespread pain with similarities to neuropathic pain in clinical findings, pathophysiology, and neuropharmacology. Pain is the predominant symptom and allodynia and hyperalgesia are common signs. Extreme fatigue, impaired cognition and nonrestorative sleep difficulties coexist in addition to other somatic symptoms. Research including neuroimaging investigations shows abnormalities in neurotransmitters and an abnormal response to pain. Altered pain processing peripherally and centrally contribu

Past, present and future of hemophilia: a narrative review.

Over the past forty years the availability of coagulation factor replacement therapy has greatly contributed to the improved care of people with hemophilia. Following the blood-borne viral infections in the late 1970s and early 1980, caused by coagulation factor concentrates manufactured using non-virally inactivated pooled plasma, the need for safer treatment became crucial to the hemophilia community. The introduction of virus inactivated plasma-derived coagulation factors and then of recombinant products has revolutionized the care of these people. These therapeutic weapons have improved th

Paroxysmal dyskinesias.

Paroxysmal movement disorders are a relatively rare and heterogenous group of conditions manifesting as episodic dyskinesia lasting a brief duration. Three forms are clearly recognized, namely, paroxysmal kinesigenic (PKD), nonkinisegenic (PNKD), and exercise induced (PED). There have been major advances in the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms and the genetics of these disorders, leading to better clinical definitions based on genotype-phenotype correlations in the familial idiopathic forms. PKD is genetically heterogenous, but there is linkage to chromosome 16 in a number of

[Philosophy of medicine in 2000].

In 2000 there is a prevalence of iatrosophistry above iatrophilosophy and philosophy of medicine. The reason of medicine as the religious duty of charity or secular philanthropy has been undergoing a crisis. Various forms of situation ethics has been replacing mortality. Medicine has been increasingly occupied by the neocapitalistic law of value. Illness now has an auction value. Suffering is a kind of debt, liable to insurance, to re-buy or to sell. The patient is utmost interest to pharmaceutical concerns and health factories. Health, formerly nationalized and now becomes privatized. The gov

JoAnne Stubbe's Radical Path: A Story of Passion, Curiosity, and Persistence.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Emerita JoAnne Stubbe was the chair of Mary O'Reilly's thesis committee. Over a decade later, they became neighbors, and then a global pandemic made them friends. Here they attempt to summarize JoAnne's life and her life's work-a story of passion, curiosity, and persistence, all for the thrill of discovery. Though, it may be premature: She is not done yet.

Four women whose pioneering contributions to science have been largely overlooked.

Ethel Browne Harvey and Hilde Pröscholdt Mangold did pioneering research in embryology, Ida Henrietta Hyde helped develop the first microelectrodes for the stimulation of single cells, and Marthe Gautier had a vital role in discovering that Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. So why are their names so little known by the scientific community at large?

The legacy of Rudolf Nieuwenhuys in perspective.

Professor Nieuwenhuys is among the great neuroanatomists and a historical figure of the later 20th and early 21st centuries. His legacy is manifold. There is the tangible legacy of the multiple scientific volumes, at once physical and conceptual entities. There is the generational legacy of handed-on scientific and intellectual traditions, and there is the legacy of specific scientific directions. In this brief Commentary, we highlight just two examples of his scientific contributions.

Hypnosis at the Crossroads: A Primer of the Past and Visions for the Future.

The field of hypnosis has intrigued clinicians and researchers alike for more than 200 years. Below, a review of hypnosis is presented from historical, theoretical, experimental, and clinical perspectives in order to provide those readers less aware of the field with a broad foundation. The literature reveals that while theoretically driven experimental research has led to groundbreaking clinical applications, there remains much to be done regarding dissemination of efficacious interventions and our understanding of underlying mechanisms responsible for observed effects. The goal is to inspire

Space to Act, Think, and Create.

My career began with the exciting beginnings of cognitive psychology. It took me to memory, mental representations, categorization, spatial cognition, language, event cognition, stories, discourse, visualizations, comics, gesture, joint action, creativity, design, and more. On the way I enjoyed collaborations with friends and students in many areas and many countries. I am slowing down just as brain, AI, computational models, and big data are taking over the field, bringing new methods and new ways of thinking and, with that, new talent and inspired minds.
