The sexual attitudes, behavior, and relationships of women with histrionic personality disorder.

To examine the sexual attitudes, behaviors, and intimate relationships of individuals with histrionic personality disorder, this study compared a sample of women with histrionic personality disorders to an adequately matched sample of women without personality disorders (aged 24-31 years) using various measures. As compared to the control group, women with histrionic personality were found to have significantly lower sexual assertiveness, greater erotophobic attitudes toward sex, lower self-esteem, and greater marital dissatisfaction. Women in the histrionic group were also found to evidence s

Microgenetic styles in histrionic and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders.

Microgenetic styles of regulation of subjects with (n = 46) and without (n = 44) psychometric evidence of personality disorders were assessed by means of the Serial Color-Word Test. The disordered group were characterized by the primary Dissociative pattern and by very low values of the initial strategy called ITa. Subjects with psychometric evidence of Histrionic (n = 21) and Obsessive-Compulsive (n = 21) Personality Disorders were then compared. Histrionic personality corresponded most often to a primary Stabilized style, with a progressive slight increase of dissociation over time (Cv type)

Sex bias in the diagnosis of histrionic and antisocial personality disorders.

The differential prevalence of the histrionic and antisocial personality disorders among men and women has been attributed both to sex biases and to actual variation in disorder base rates. The present study assessed the bias and base rate explanations and examined whether sex biases are minimized by the relatively explicit diagnostic criteria in the DSM-III. Psychologists (N = 354) either diagnosed 9 DSM-III disorders from case histories that varied in the ambiguity of the antisocial and histrionic personality disorder diagnoses or rated the degree to which specific features extracted from th

Questioning the coherence of histrionic personality disorder: borderline and hysterical personality subtypes in adults and adolescents.

After the introduction of histrionic personality disorder (HPD), nosologists struggled to reduce its overlap with borderline personality disorder and other PDs. We studied the coherence of HPD in adults and adolescents as part of 2 larger studies. Clinicians described a random patient with personality pathology using rigorous psychometrics, including the SWAP-II (a Q-sort that captures personality and its pathology in adults) in study 1 and the SWAP-II-A (the adolescent version) in study 2. Using DSM-IV-based measures, we identified patients who met HPD criteria with varying degrees of diagnos

Implicit and self-attributed dependency needs in dependent and histrionic personality disorders.

Theorists speculate that dependent personality disorder (DPD) and histrionic personality disorder (HPD) are both associated with high levels of implicit (i.e., unconscious) dependency needs but speculate that only DPD is associated with high levels of self-attributed (i.e., conscious) dependency needs. To test this hypothesis, 444 undergraduates (236 women and 208 men) completed the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised (PDQ-R), along with widely used measures of implicit dependency needs (the Rorschach Oral Dependency Scale; ROD), and self-attributed dependency needs (the Interpersonal

Case Report: A possible association between significant dissociations after esketamine treatment and histrionic personality disorder.

Dissociation is a complex and transdiagnostic phenomenon defined as a disruption of, or discontinuity in, the normal, subjective integration of one or more aspects of psychological functioning. Dissociation has been identified as one of the most frequently occurring adverse effects associated with the use of esketamine nasal sprays. Individuals with high trait dissociation may be at a higher risk of experiencing an induced dissociative state and a significantly higher risk of experiencing severe induced dissociation. High esketamine-induced dissociation may act as a predictor of optimal therap

Relative Effects of Sexual Assault and Temperament Traits on Cognitive Characteristics of Histrionic Personality Disorder.

Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is a common and problematic form of personality pathology involving excessive attention-seeking, often through overly sexualized means. Much of the research on HPD has involved the association between HPD characteristics and basic temperament traits. Given the sometimes hypersexualized presentation of HPD, another potential influence on HPD characteristics may be exposure to sexual assault. However, there is little research on the association between sexual assault and HPD in general or with respect to temperament traits in particular. In this study, we ex

Sexual Coercion by Women: The Influence of Pornography and Narcissistic and Histrionic Personality Disorder Traits.

Largely overlooked in the literature, this study investigated factors influencing women's use of sexual coercion. Specifically, pornography use and personality disorder traits linked with poor impulse control, emotional regulation, and superior sense of sexual desirability were considered. Women (N = 142) aged 16-53 years (M = 24.23, SD = 7.06) were recruited from community and student populations. Participants completed the Narcissistic and Histrionic subscales of the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4, in addition to the Cyber-Pornography Use Inventory to explore the influence of their p

A time series evaluation of the treatment of histrionic personality disorder with cognitive analytic therapy.

The central aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) with a patient presenting with Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD). The methodology employed an A/B single case time-series experimental design, with additionally 6 months of continuous follow-up in the experimental measures. Five HPD experimental variables were collected on a daily basis, creating 357 days of continual data for analysis, across various phases of assessment baseline (A), treatment (B) and follow-up. The therapy contract was 24 sessions of CAT, with 4 additional follow-up session

Neurocognitive impairment in dramatic personalities: histrionic, narcissistic, borderline, and antisocial disorders.

Thirty-seven patients with personalities in the dramatic cluster (DSM-III-R histrionic, narcissistic, borderline, and antisocial) and 40 controls matched for age and gender were evaluated on 16 neurocognitive variables. The evaluation screened for deficits in functions of attention, memory, language, abstraction, and behavior planning/sequencing. Analysis of variance revealed significant deficits in neurocognitive performance among patients with dramatic personalities, particularly in subtests requiring multi-step, multi-element associative operations.

Gender stereotypes for paranoid, antisocial, compulsive, dependent, and histrionic personality disorders.

To assess similarity between gender-role stereotypes and the personality disorder prototypes, university students (31 women and 13 men) were asked to assign gender to six descriptions of DSM-III--R personality disorders. Significant agreement was found in gender assignment for five of the six descriptions. Descriptions of the paranoid, antisocial, and compulsive personality disorders were viewed as male, and descriptions of the dependent and histrionic personality disorders were viewed as female. The description of schizoid personality disorder was not significantly gender-typed.

Hypomanic symptoms predict an increase in narcissistic and histrionic personality disorder features in suicidal young adults.

Consistent with the "scar hypothesis", according to which mood depression might impact personality, we examined the effect of unipolar and hypomanic mood disturbances on cluster B (i.e., narcissistic, histrionic, and borderline) personality disorder features. Data from 113 suicidal young adults were utilized, and cross-lagged associations between unipolar and hypomanic mood disturbances and cluster B personality disorder features were examined using manifest-variable structural equation modeling (SEM). Hypomanic symptoms predicted an increase in narcissistic and histrionic personality disorder

Construction and Validation of the Identity Crisis and Histrionic Personality Disorder Scale for Young Adult Girls.

Background This study centers on the development and validation of a psychometric scale designed to assess identity crisis and histrionic personality disorder (HPD), addressing a significant gap in current diagnostic tools. Identity crises, often characterized by confusion about one's self-concept and societal roles, commonly emerge during adolescence and can lead to maladaptive behaviors. HPD, marked by attention-seeking and emotional dysregulation, shares notable overlaps with identity crises, particularly in disrupted self-concept and a heightened dependence on external validation. Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill Initiation in a Patient With Major Depressive Disorder, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, and Histrionic Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid psychiatric conditions present an added layer of challenge in managing patients, as each condition and associated set of symptoms exacerbate the complexity of the overall presentation. Premenopausal women may be at particular risk for inadequate care, as their comorbid conditions may present overlapping symptoms and mask independent premenstrual symptoms. The prevalence of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and associated conditions can be as high as 8% in women of reproductive age. Recognizing and assessing premenstrual symptoms that are comorbid with other psychiatric condi

Facial emotion recognition deficits and alexithymia in borderline, narcissistic, and histrionic personality disorders.

Previous studies that aimed to support emotion recognition deficits and alexithymia in B cluster personality disorders have mainly focused on borderline personality disorder (BPD), and resulted in mixed findings. In our study we examine emotion recognition and alexithymia in patients with histrionic (HPD), narcissistic (NPD) and borderline (BPD) personality disorders compared to each other and healthy controls. Furthermore, the possibility is investigated that it is not the type of PD but the severity of psychopathology which predicts the severity of emotion recognition deficits and alexithymi

Treatment outlines for borderline, narcissistic and histrionic personality disorders. The Quality Assurance Project.

Treatment outlines for Axis I disorders were published during 1982-1985. Treatment outlines for the DSM-III personality disorders are being published. This guide to the treatment of borderline, histrionic and narcissistic disorders was developed from the literature, from the opinions of practising psychiatrists and from the experience of nominated experts. Even though the treatment of patients who suffer from these disorders is very difficult, the surveys of outcome in the literature suggest that a majority of patients improve significantly with long term psychotherapy. In the present outline

Successful and rapid response to electroconvulsive therapy of a suicidal patient with comorbid bipolar I disorder and histrionic personality disorder.

A woman with bipolar disorder I, histrionic personality disorder, and suicidal ideation with repeated suicide attempts, who had been treated for 2 years with mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines, received a total of 8 bitemporal-biparietal electroconvulsive therapy sessions. Her suicidal ideation and self-harm behavior disappeared immediately after the first session and her psychopathology soon after. This supports the existence of a relatively independent suicidal syndrome and confirms data on its immediate responsiveness to electroconvulsive therapy. Electroconvulsive therap

Electroconvulsive therapy in a physically restrained man with comorbid major depression, severe agoraphobia with panic disorder, and histrionic personality disorder.

A 36-year-old man with comorbid panic disorder with agoraphobia, major depression, and histrionic personality disorder since age 21 was resistant to combined drug and psychotherapy treatment. His conditions had progressively worsened with time, causing him to withdraw socially and to simultaneously require continuous physical restraint, which further worsened his functioning. He spent almost 3 consecutive years in restraint, until he consented to receive bilateral ECT treatment. He improved after 13 sessions in all areas (social and role functioning, and panic, depressive, and histrionic sympt

Is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, histrionic personality disorder category a valid construct?

PURPOSE: The study investigated crucial aspects of the construct validity of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) histrionic personality disorder (HPD) category. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 2289 patients from the Norwegian Network of Psychotherapeutic Day Hospitals. Construct validity was assessed by means of prevalence, comorbidity with other personality disorders, internal consistency among HPD criteria, severity indices, as well as factor analyses. RESULTS: The prevalence of HPD was very low (0.4 %). The comorbidity was high, espe
