In-home environment and happiness among older adults in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: The fact that housing can play a critical role in maintaining the health and independence related to happiness of the older population has been studied in more developed countries. However, research on the effect of housing conditions on happiness is rare in less developed countries. This study aimed to construct and test a structural equation model describing the structural relationship among personal aspects (living alone and physical disability), in-home environment (sleeping place and toilet/bathroom), and happiness among older adults in Thailand. METHOD: The data on the popul

CHAOS in the Home Environment and Child Weight-Related Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Biopsychosocial approaches to health care are critical to addressing childhood obesity. This study aimed to examine how multiple indicators of the home environment related to child weight-related outcomes. We hypothesized that families with home environments of higher chaos and stress, and lower quality parent-child interactions, would have children with a higher body mass index (BMI), less healthy dietary intake, and less healthy eating behaviors. METHODS: Data were drawn from the cross-sectional Phase I of the Family Matters study. Participants were 150 racially/ethnically div

Sleep Environment and Insomnia in Elderly Persons Living at Home.

The aim of this study was to draw a portrait of the sleep environment of elderly persons living in private households and to determine its relationship with the presence of insomnia. A sample of 599 individuals aged 70 years and older responded to questions about the comfort of their pillow and mattress and the noise level and brightness of their bedroom at night and in the morning. They were also asked whether or not they shared their bed or bedroom with a sleep partner. The Insomnia Severity Index was used to assess insomnia severity. Over 40% of the study participants were using a pillow th

Family and neighborhood disadvantage, home environment, and children's school readiness.

The purpose of this study was to examine associations between family socioeconomic risk, neighborhood disadvantage, and children's school readiness. A sample of 420 children from 48 early childcare programs yielded multi-informant data. The average age was 55.3 months (SD = 6.4), with 38% of children being Black, non-Hispanic, Hispanic, or other minority race (American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander). One third (32.4%) of the parents had annual incomes less than $30,000. We used multilevel structural equation modeling to test direct and indirect associa

Home Assessment of Person-Environment Interaction (HoPE): content validation process.

The purpose of this paper is to present the content validation, including a pilot test, of the Home Assessment of the Person-Environment Interaction (HoPE). The HoPE fills a gap for evaluating issues related to home adaptation. Using qualitative methods, a two-phase study was conducted: an expert consultation and a pilot test. The expert consultation was conducted via focus groups with occupational therapists (n = 20), and individual interviews with adults who had undergone home adaptation (n = 5). The pilot test was undertaken using a multiple case study design of four adults awaiting home ad

Music@Home-Retrospective: A new measure to retrospectively assess childhood home musical environments.

Early home musical environments can significantly impact sensory, cognitive, and socioemotional development. While longitudinal studies may be resource-intensive, retrospective reports are a relatively quick and inexpensive way to examine associations between early home musical environments and adult outcomes. We present the Music@Home-Retrospective scale, derived partly from the Music@Home-Preschool scale (Politimou et al., 2018), to retrospectively assess the childhood home musical environment. In two studies (total n = 578), we conducted an exploratory factor analysis (Study 1) and confirma

The effect of the home environment on children with autism spectrum disorder.

The estimated prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is 1% worldwide. Autistic individuals typically have a high level of sensitivity to the various environmental stimuli (smell, noise, light). These stimuli have a positive or negative influence on the person-environment interaction, and an excess of stimuli may create inappropriate or unanticipated behavioral responses (such as a crisis) effecting their well-being. The Model of Competence, which provides an explanation of the interaction between the individual and the environment, was selected as the conceptual framework to direct this

Welfare Reform and the Quality of Young Children's Home Environments.

This study investigates the effects of welfare reform-a major policy shift in the United States that increased low-income mothers' employment and reliance on earnings instead of cash assistance-on the quality of the home environments mothers provide for their preschool-age children. Using empirical methods designed to identify plausibly causal effects, we estimate the effects of welfare reform on validated survey and observational measures of maternal behaviors that support children's cognitive skills and emotional adjustment and the material goods that parents purchase to stimulate their chil

Transition to a Safe Home Sleep Environment for the NICU Patient.

Of the nearly 3.8 million infants born in the United States in 2018, 8.3% had low birth weight (<2500 g [5.5 lb]) and 10% were born preterm (gestational age of <37 completed weeks). Many of these infants and others with congenital anomalies, perinatally acquired infections, and other disease require admission to a NICU. In the past decade, admission rates to NICUs have been increasing; it is estimated that between 10% and 15% of infants will spend time in a NICU, representing approximately 500 000 neonates annually. Approximately 3600 infants die annually in the United States from sleep-relate

Asthma, COPD, and home environments: Interventions with older adults.

BACKGROUND: We describe a multifaceted home environmental intervention project involving low-income older adults with asthma who have a greater risk of asthma-related respiratory impacts because they spend up to 90% of their time in the home where many allergens and respiratory irritants are found. Although sufficient evidence suggests that home interventions are effective in improving health of children with asthma, the Task Force on Community Preventive Services has stated that evidence is insufficient for the effectiveness of home interventions on adults with asthma. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate

Promoting autonomy in a smart home environment with a smarter interface.

In the not too distant future, the median population age will tend towards 65; an age at which the need for dependency increases. Most older people want to remain autonomous and self-sufficient for as long as possible. As environments become smarter home automation solutions can be provided to support this aspiration. The technology discussed within this paper focuses on providing a home automation system that can be controlled by most users regardless of mobility restrictions, and hence it may be applicable to older people. It comprises a hybrid Brain-Computer Interface, home automation user

Music and speech input in the home environments of Latinx infants.

Infants' experience with the auditory world is culture-specific and shapes how their brains process complex sounds in their environment. The present study is the first to examine naturalistic exposure to speech and music, two main components of infants' auditory soundscapes, in Latinx U.S. infants (n = 64; age range 4-23mo). Through a bootstrapping approach, results are then compared to a previously published dataset of non-Latinx U.S. infants. Two daylong audio recordings per infant were captured with LENA. Using a crowdsourcing approach, 417 naïve listeners annotated a total of 6400 randomly

Veterans Finding Community and a "Home" Within an Emergency Housing Environment.

In April 2020, the Department of Veterans Affairs responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and escalating unsheltered homelessness in Los Angeles by sanctioning a tent turned tiny shelter encampment at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs medical center. Initially, staff offered linkages to on-campus VA healthcare. However, as many Veterans living in the encampment struggled to avail themselves of these services, our "encampment medicine" team was launched to provide on-site care coordination and healthcare at the tiny shelters. This case study showcases the team's engagement with a Veteran experie

Human Ocular Surface Particulate Composition in the Clinical Versus Home Environment.

PURPOSE: Our eyes are chronically exposed to airborne particulate matter shown to adversely affect the ocular surface. This research examines size, type (organic vs. inorganic), and elemental composition of particles recovered from the ocular surface in 2 environments and their associations with dry eye (DE) metrics. METHODS: Particles were recovered from the right eye using Schirmer strips obtained both in the clinic and home environments 9 ± 8 days apart. Particle size and elemental composition were assessed using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The paired t

Suitable Data Representation for Abnormal Pattern Detection in Smart Home Environment.

Development in the area of sensor technologies and subsequently applications within the Internet of Things allows the implementation of systems for continuous monitoring of human's vital parameters and daily activities. This development is welcomed since the population aged 65 and over is constantly increasing. Moreover, the number of seniors living alone is also increasing. The monitoring systems can contribute to the safety and security of elderly people and allow them to stay at home where they are used to live as long as possible. Application of various sensor types raises questions on the

The home within care: exploring home-like design in paediatric/adolescent palliative care environments.

This study explores the integration of home-like design elements in paediatric/adolescent palliative care inpatient units, drawing on perspectives from both medical and architectural professionals. Recognising the unique developmental and psychosocial needs of young patients, this research explores how the spatial and emotional qualities associated with 'home' are interpreted and operationalised in palliative care environments. A multimethod approach was employed, including a targeted literature review, analysis of seven international paediatric hospice design and semistructured interviews wit

In-home work environment for home care workers in Northern Sweden before and during the Covid-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The in-home work environment is the main work environment for home care workers, but it has only been sparsely studied. Our aim was to investigate the in-home work environment for home care workers by exploring challenges that arise regardless of a pandemic and by investigating Covid-19-specific challenges. METHODS: Two cross-sectional studies were conducted, one before (2017) and one during the pandemic (2021/2022) in three Swedish regions (Jämtland/Härjedalen, Västerbotten and Västernorrland), in which 1,154 (58%) out of 2,000 and 629 (33%) of 1,900 invited home care workers par
