5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid and homovanillic acid in cerebrospinal fluid of children with febrile convulsions.

5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained from febrile children subdivided according to the presence or absence of convulsions. Lumbar puncture was made either early (mean time 2 h) or late (3-6 days) after the febrile convulsion. The level of 5-HIAA was significantly decreased in children early and late after the febrile convulsion as compared with the convulsion-free group, but the HVA level was reduced only early after the febrile convulsion. These results suppor

The effect of valproic acid on the 5-hydroxyindoleacetic, homovanillic and lactic acid levels of cerebrospinal fluid.

In this study the cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contents of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) were sequentially measured in free-moving rats which were administered 50-500 mg X kg-1 valproic acid. Animals receiving 100-500 mg X kg-1 valproic acid showed significant increases in CSF 5-HIAA and HVA content, with maximal accumulation rates of 1.80-2.10 and 0.25-0.30 nmol X ml-1 X h-1, respectively, being reached at the 250-mg X kg-1 dose. The combination of valproic acid 500 mg X kg-1 and probenecid 300 mg X kg-1 failed to increase the accumulation rates of 5-H

Homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in the ventricular CSF of comatose patients with obstructive hydrocephalus.

Ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were determined every 2 to 4 hours over a period of 1 to 4 days in 12 patients, consisting of seven cases of brain tumor, two cases of cerebrovascular disease, and three cases of head injury. The concentrations of HVA and 5-HIAA varied with time in all cases, and significant correlations were found between the two values in eight cases. However, the relationship between variations of HVA and 5-HIAA levels and rhythms of sleep and waking could not be clarified. Both HVA and 5-HIAA con

Psychological and serum homovanillic acid changes in men administered androgenic steroids.

We report a difference in the response of serum homovanillic acid (HVA) and in the performance of some psychological tasks before and after the administration of testosterone enanthate (TE, 100 or 300 mg/wk) or nandrolone decanoate (ND, 100 or 300 mg/wk) for 6 wk to healthy men. Serum HVA was significantly increased in both the low- and high-dose ND groups, from 8.4 +/- 1.0 and 8.7 +/- 0.5 pmol/ml (mean +/- SE) to 11.6 +/- 1.7 and 10.7 +/- 1.1 pmol/ml respectively. No significant changes in HVA were observed for the groups administered TE, nor in 5-HIAA for any of the groups. The influence of

Homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid in children with afebrile and febrile convulsions.

The concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) were measured in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from five groups of children: (1) afebrile controls (2) febrile controls, (3) children with afebrile convulsions, which included children with established idiopathic epilepsy, (4) children with first febrile convulsions, and (5) children with repeated febrile convulsions. There were no significant differences between the metabolite levels in the five diagnostic groups. The CSF concentrations of 5-HIAA and HVA in these children, with a mean age of 2.5 years, we

Concentration of homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in the ventricular cerebrospinal fluid of patients with obstructive hydrocephalus.

In 12 patients with different posterior fossa tumours the concentrations of homovanillic acid (HVA) and of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured in cerebrospinal fluid from the lateral ventricles. All patients had obstructive hydrocephalus. Patients with a clear increase of 5-HIAA/HVA ratio in the ventricular CSF have died subsequently. This feature may have a diagnostic value, and indicates the prevalence of serotoninergic neurones in patients with obstructive hydrocephalus with fatal course after surgery.

Assessment of central dopaminergic function using plasma-free homovanillic acid after debrisoquin administration.

Central dopaminergic (DA) function in children and adults was assessed by monitoring plasma-free levels of the dopamine metabolite homovanillic acid (pHVA) before and after a single oral dose and chronic oral administration of debrisoquin. Debrisoquin inhibits peripheral metabolism of dopamine to HVA and does not cross the blood-brain barrier. By reducing peripheral formation of HVA through the use of debrisoquin, the remaining HVA in plasma more accurately reflects central DA activity. Debrisoquin administration resulted in marked reductions of pHVA in each of 12 patients studied. Eleven of t

Failure of cerebrospinal fluid homovanillic acid to predict levodopa response in Parkinson's disease.

Lumbar cerebrospinal fluid homovanillic acid levels were estimated in 60 patients with Parkinsonism before and during levodopa treatment. There was a slight negative correlation between pretreatment CSF homovanillic acid levels and disability. There was no correlation between pretreatment homovanillic acid levels and clinical response to levodopa. Patients with high pretreatment levels did as well as those with depressed levels. High (normal or near normal) levels of CSF homovanillic acid in a patient with Parkinsonism do not necessarily indicate that the Parkinsonism will not respond to levod

Updated Parkinson's disease motor subtypes classification and correlation to cerebrospinal homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels.

INTRODUCTION: Motor classifications of Parkinson's Disease (PD) have been widely used. This paper aims to update a subtype classification using the MDS-UPDRS-III and determine if cerebrospinal neurotransmitter profiles (HVA and 5-HIAA) differ between these subtypes in a cohort from the Parkinson's Progression Marker Initiative (PPMI). METHODS: UPDRS and MDS-UPDRS scores were collected for 20 PD patients. Akinetic-rigid (AR), Tremor-dominant (TD), and Mixed (MX) subtypes were calculated using a formula derived from UPDRS, and a new ratio was developed for subtyping patients with the MDS-UPDRS.

Comparative evaluation of 5-HIAA (5-hydroxy indoleacetic acid) and HVA (homovanillic acid) in infantile hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Infantile hydrocephalus is a common congenital problem. Functional and behavioral disturbances associated with hydrocephalus may be due to altered neurotransmitters in the brain. The role of neurotransmitters has been established in various psychiatric and neurological conditions. Therefore, we decided to study the role of 5-hydroxy indoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of hydrocephalic patients as diagnostic and prognostic marker. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ventricular CSF samples were taken from hydrocephalic patients peroperatively and

Lower CSF homovanillic acid levels in depressed patients with a history of alcoholism.

Major depression and alcoholism are often comorbid, resulting in more impairment and more suicidal behavior compared with either diagnosis alone. This study compared clinical features and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) monoamine metabolites in depressed subjects with and without a history of alcoholism and healthy volunteers. We hypothesized that depressed subjects with a history of alcoholism would be more aggressive, impulsive, and suicidal than depressed subjects without a history of alcoholism, and would have lower CSF monoamine metabolite levels. We compared 63 subjects with a current major de

Plasma homovanillic acid and treatment response in a large group of schizophrenic patients.

Plasma levels of homovanillic acid (pHVA), a metabolite of dopamine, were measured in ninety-five Chinese schizophrenic patients free of neuroleptics for at least four weeks. These patients were treated with classical antipsychotics for six weeks. Pretreatment pHVA was positively correlated with the subsequent clinical response (r = 0.408, p < 0.0001). Good responders (BPRS improvement > or = 50%, n = 47) had higher pretreatment pHVA levels than poor responders (BPRS improvement < 50%, n = 48) (15.7 +/- 8.4 ng/ml versus 9.9 +/- 3.7 ng/ml, p < 0.0001). A higher than 15 ng/ml pretreatment pHVA l

Tolerance to the increase of striatal homovanillic acid elicited by several anorectic drugs.

Several anorectic drugs affect dopamine metabolism in the rat striatum, increasing the concentration of homovanillic acid (HVA). However 1- and d-amphetamine and mazindol develop a tolerance to the HVA increase. On the contrary, the effect of fenfluramine and S 992 is not reduced by sub-chronic treatments. Moreover, a cross-tolerance to this biochemical effect develops between amphetamine and mazindol, but pretreatment with fenfluramine or with S 992 does not induce cross-tolerance to amphetamine.

The emerging neuromodulatory role of Homovanillic acid in the medial prefrontal cortex: Implications for anxiety.

Homovanillic acid (HVA), the principal terminal metabolite of dopamine, has long been considered an inactive byproduct of dopaminergic signaling. However, its potential neuromodulatory role in emotional regulation remains largely unexplored. This study investigated the neuromodulatory capacity of HVA within the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and its implications for anxiety-like behavior. We employed an integrated approach in rodents, combining neurochemical profiling, stereotaxic microinfusion, and whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology. Rats were phenotyped for anxiety-like behavior using

Relationship of symptomatology, gender, and antipsychotic drug treatment with plasma homovanillic acid in schizophrenia.

AIM: To study the role of dopamine neurotransmission in schizophrenia and its drug treatment by assessing the relationship of plasma homovanillic acid (pHVA), a major central dopamine metabolite to various clinical parameters in schizophrenic patients. METHODS: pHVA was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection in a large cohort of both medicated and unmedicated DSM-IV schizophrenic patients. Prior to the measurement of pHVA, the patients were rated on the schedule for the assessment of positive and negative symptoms (PANSS). RESULTS: (1) pHVA in 46 pa

Plasma free homovanillic acid (HVA) as a predictor of clinical response in acute psychosis.

The relationship of plasma free homovanillic acid (HVA) and methoxyhydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) to early clinical response was prospectively studied in a new series of acutely psychotic inpatients given a fixed dose of perphenazine elixir for 10 days. Elevated pretreatment plasma HVA but not MHPG was significantly associated with good response. Change in HVA was correlated with a favorable response and a significant decline in MHPG was found in responders. Results suggest that HVA can provide a useful clinical predictor of response, and that both dopamine metabolism and noradrenergic functioning

Cerebrospinal fluid adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid and homovanillic acid in patients with sleep apnoea syndrome.

Adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) were determined in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with respiratory disorder and hypersomnia and in control patients. Patients with the sleep apnoea syndrome confirmed polygraphically showed elevated levels of cyclic AMP and 5-HIAA. Cyclic AMP levels were inversely correlated with arterial Po(2), measured under resting conditions. The level of HVA also was raised, but the change was not statistically significant.
