Between 1994 and 2006, a total of 280 cases of varying degrees of tetrodotoxin poisoning following ingestion of the toxic eggs of the horseshoe crab, Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, were admitted to the medical service of Chon Buri Hospital. The severity of the poisoning was classified into four stages based on clinical signs and symptoms of human tetrodotoxication. The data reviewed here show that histamine, octopamine, and serotonin are abundant in the visual system of the horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus. Horseshoe crab Factor G is a heterodimeric serine protease zymogen that is activated by (1→3)-β-D-glucans (BDG) from fungal cell walls. This reaction is used in diagnostic agents for deep-seated mycosis. At present, functional analysis using Factor G from Tachypleus tridentatus has been performed, and genetic information has been published, but reconstitution using recombinant proteins has not yet been achieved. The distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the lateral eye and brain of the horseshoe crab was investigated with histochemical means using standard controls to eliminate butyrylcholinesterase and nonspecific staining. The Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay is currently being studied for use in diagnosing gonococcal urethritis/cervicitis syndromes and as a screening test for gonococcal cervicitis. Experience shows that the test can be adapted to office use by private physicians, providing rapid, accurate results in situations where laboratory facilities are unavailable. Further modifications are improving the speed and interpretation of results.

Hemocyanin of the horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus is composed of 48 oxygen-binding subunits, which are arranged in eight hexameric building blocks. Allosteric interactions in this oligomeric protein have been examined by measurement of high-precision oxygen-equilibrium curves, using an automated Imai cell.
