Newborn hearing screening programme based on an integrated hospital and community care system. Results of the first 4 years of activity.

Since January 2012, babies born in the province of Modena, Italy, have routinely undergone hearing testing as part of a two-stage screening programme. Newborn hearing screening (NHS) has been based on an integrated hospital and community care system and this study aims to assess screening coverage, referral rates, the prevalence, type and extent of hearing loss several years into the programme. Data were collected from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2015. Coverage was over 99% in all five facilities of the province. The ratio of "fails of the screening" to the total number of infants tested v

Risk of malignancy assessment of the International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytopathology: Experience in a community hospital setting and comparison with other studies.

BACKGROUND: The International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytopathology (ISRSFC) was published recently to provide standard reporting terminology for serous fluid. To date, several ISRSFC reclassification studies have reported a wide range of diagnostic category frequency and the associated risk of malignancy (ROM). Herein, the authors applied the ISRSFC to report pleural and peritoneal effusions retrospectively in a community hospital setting. METHODS: With Internal Review Board approval, 446 peritoneal effusion specimens and 299 pleural fluid specimens from 576 patients in three commu

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa community acquired pneumonia: Prevalence and locally derived risk factors in a single hospital system.

OBJECTIVES: Current American Thoracic Society/Infectious Disease Society of America (ATS/IDSA) community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) guidelines expand the CAP definition to include infections occurring in patients with recent health care exposure. The guidelines now recommend that hospital systems determine their own local prevalence and predictors of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among patients satisfying this new broader CAP definition. We sought to carry out these recommendations in our system, focusing on the emergency department, where CAP diag

Feasibility Study on Development of a Collaborative Monitoring System between a Hospital and Community Pharmacy Using an Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome Application for Breast Cancer Outpatients Treated with Abemaciclib.

We developed a symptom monitoring system that facilitates collaborations among physicians, hospital pharmacists, and community pharmacists using an electronic Patient-Reported Outcome (ePRO) application. The present study investigated the feasibility and acceptability of this system. Before and after the introduction of the system, participants completed a questionnaire assessing the burden, anxiety, and satisfaction using a 0-10 numeric rating scale. The rate of application input implementation, the number of times alert and free messages sent by patients, adherence, the incidence of adverse

Screening for frequent hospitalization risk among community-dwelling older adult between 2016 and 2023: machine learning-driven item selection, scoring system development, and prospective validation.

BACKGROUND: Screening for frequent hospitalizations in the community can help prevent super-utilizers from growing in the inpatient population. However, the determinants of frequent hospitalizations have not been systematically examined, their operational definitions have been inconsistent, and screening among community members lacks tools. Nor do we know if what determined frequent hospitalizations before COVID-19 continued to be the determinant of frequent hospitalizations at the height of the pandemic. Hence, the current study aims to identify determinants of frequent hospitalization and th

The Role of the Built Environment: How Decentralized Nurse Stations Shape Communication, Patient Care Processes, and Patient Outcomes.

Increasingly, health communication scholars are attending to how hospital built environments shape communication, patient care processes, and patient outcomes. This multimethod study was conducted on two floors of a newly designed urban hospital. Nine focus groups interviews were conducted with 35 health care professionals from 10 provider groups. Seven of the groups were homogeneous by profession or level: nursing (three groups), nurse managers (two groups), and one group each of nurse care technicians ("techs") and physicians. Two mixed groups were comprised of staff from pharmacy, occupatio

Bringing a WEB-based interface to a hospital information system.

The Hospital Information System at the MU Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is a "home-grown" system written in MUMPS. The system has a "roll-and-scroll" user interface typical of terminal based systems from the 1970s and early 1980s. We are now introducing a new user interface that uses World Wide Web technology (HTML forms). Computers connected to the hospital's intranet can access the hospital system using the Web browser of the user's choice. The new user interface can run in parallel with the older interface (even on the same computer), and uses the same underlying database. This allow

Impact on hospital functions following the 2010 Chilean earthquake.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the 2010 Chilean earthquake on hospital functions and services. Hospitals functioning in a post-disaster environment must provide emergency medical care related to the event, in addition to providing standard community health services. This study focused on damage to both structural and nonstructural components, as well as to utility services. METHODS: Site visits were made to every hospital in a single province (Bio-Bio). Engineers conducted damage assessments while interviews of hospital administrators were conducted. The su

Shaken but prepared: Analysis of disaster response at an academic medical centre following the Boston Marathon bombings.

Over the last decade, there has been a rise in the number of mass casualty incidences (MCIs) and their subsequent effect on hospital systems. While there has been much discussion over improving procedures to treat victims of MCIs, there has not been a thorough, systems-based analysis concerning the costs incurred by hospitals during such events. Here the authors examine the history of the Hospital Incident Command Center and how its evolution at Tufts Medical Center helped mitigate the damage following the Boston Marathon Bombings. Tufts' unique variations to the Hospital Incident Command Cent
