Pattern and burden of animal bite cases in a tertiary care hospital in Haryana.

Rabies is an endemic disease in both developed and developing world and is responsible for a large number of morbidities and mortalities in humans. Limited supply of vaccine hampers the accessibility of life saving treatment. In our study carried out in a tertiary care hospital in Haryana showed that there were 3617 animal bite cases reported in a year with an average of 9.91 new cases per day. The average economic burden related to management of these bite cases is 3.5 lacs per month. This cost along with vaccine demand can be substantially reduced if intradermal schedule is introduced.

Re-exposure animal bite management among incident animal bite cases in a secondary care Hospital in Delhi, India.

Complete postexposure prophylaxis with 4 doses of anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) in a previously vaccinated (nonnaïve) individual results in administration of two extra ARV doses resulting in wastages of precious resources comprising vaccine logistics, human resources, physician, and patient time. This cross-sectional study conducted in a secondary care hospital in Delhi among 175 incident animal bite cases observed 39 (22.3%) had an animal-bite history within the previous 5 years. A total of 19 (10.8%) cases reported a history of complete ARV vaccination during a previous animal-bite exposure. How

Outbreak and dissemination of the international high-risk NDM-5-producing Escherichia coli ST410 clone in companion animal hospitals in China.

Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPEs) have increasingly been detected in companion animals, posing potential risks to both animal and public health. We investigated bla NDM-5-positive Escherichia coli from fecal and environmental samples collected between 2019 and 2025 from 12 companion animal hospitals across six cities in China. A total of 41 bla NDM-5-positive E. coli isolates were recovered from six hospitals, with 36 (87.8%) belonging to sequence type (ST) 410. The 36 E. coli ST410 isolates belonged to B4/H24RxC or B5/H24RxC sub-lineages and displayed close phylogenetic relatedn

Description of neurological mimics presented to the neurology service of a small animal referral hospital.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians observe that cats and dogs referred to neurology services often do not have an underlying neurological disorder. There has been no analysis of the frequency or categorisation of these neurological mimics. METHODS: Retrospective study of 520 cases was carried out. Data on signalment, presenting clinical signs, neurological examination findings and final diagnosis were collected. Final diagnoses were classified as primary neurological, non-neurological in origin but with neurological clinical manifestation, completely non-neurological (neurological mimics) or undiagnosed.

Incidence of kidney disease in the canine population treated at a small animal hospital in Uruguay.

Kidney disease (KD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in dogs; however, epidemiological data remain limited. This study estimated the incidence of KD and characterized chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI) through an observational study of dogs treated at a small animal hospital. A case-control study was subsequently conducted to identify factors associated with KD. Among 2,393 newly registered dogs in 2023, 91 cases of KD were identified, and an equal number of controls were randomly selected. Adjusted odds ratios were estimated using logistic regression models

Antiviral and immunomodulatory effect of zapnometinib in animal models and hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

INTRODUCTION: In severe COVID-19, direct-acting antiviral drugs were not effective in hyperinflammatory stages and steroid treatment may weaken host immunity. The MEK inhibitor zapnometinib, as a host-targeting drug, has demonstrated promising efficacy against severe acute viral infections. Proof-of-concept for the innovative approach was presented in a clinical Phase 2 trial with hospitalized COVID-19 patients. METHODS: The antiviral and immunomodulatory potential of zapnometinib was investigated in samples obtained from COVID-19 patients enrolled in a Phase 2 clinical trial (RESPIRE), as we

Large animal-related injury requiring hospital admission: injury pattern disparities.

BACKGROUND: Due to the infrequent occurrence of large animal-related injury (LARI) in many areas, their significance as a public health problem could be overlooked. The purpose of this study was to examine the demographics and injury disparities associated with LARI. METHODS: The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Survey from 2001 was used to construct a cohort of patients admitted after LARI. Patients were stratified by age, gender, race, and median household income of patient's zip code. Where available total hospital charges were converted to cost using the hospit

Molecular Analysis of Canine Filaria and Its Wolbachia Endosymbionts in Domestic Dogs Collected from Two Animal University Hospitals in Bangkok Metropolitan Region, Thailand.

Canine filariasis is caused by several nematode species, such as Dirofilaria immitis, Dirofilaria repens, Brugia pahangi, Brugia malayi, and Acanthocheilonema reconditum. Zoonotic filariasis is one of the world's neglected tropical diseases. Since 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) has promoted a global filarial eradication program to eliminate filariasis by 2020. Apart from vector control strategies, the infection control of reservoir hosts is necessary for more effective filariasis control. In addition, many studies have reported that Wolbachia is necessary for the development, reprod

Risk factors for shedding of Salmonella enterica among hospitalized large animals over a 10-year period in a veterinary teaching hospital.

BACKGROUND: Transmission of Salmonella in veterinary hospitals is typically associated with environmental contamination. Links between isolates recovered from hospitalized large animals and environment suggest animals as the likely source. Therefore, understanding factors influencing shedding is key in control. Shedding in hospitalized animals has been investigated, but many studies focused on subsets of animals limiting generalizability. OBJECTIVE: (1) Investigate factors associated with fecal shedding of Salmonella among hospitalized large animals at a veterinary hospital. (2) Compare resul

Feasibility of multimedia animations as preoperative guides for urgent abdominal surgeries in a public hospital in Brazil.

Health literacy, culture and language play vital roles in patients' understanding of health issues. Obstacles are more evident in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where inadequate patient education levels are higher and hospital resources are lower. This is a prospective pilot study assessing the feasibility of digital preoperative animations as guides for surgical patients. Patients admitted to a public hospital in Brazil for acute cholecystitis or appendicitis were included. Feasibility was represented by acceptability rate and ease of integration with department protocols. Thirty-f

Characterization of antimicrobial prescription frequency and diversity in a large animal veterinary medical teaching hospital.

Antimicrobials are commonly used in veterinary medicine for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes, but little is known about the frequency with which they are prescribed or the quantity administered, especially in large animals. Furthermore, there are no standardized metrics for characterizing antimicrobial use, which can lead to confusion when comparing antimicrobial use among different units (institution, clinical service, clinician). Because there is no gold standard metric, the most comprehensive characterization of antimicrobial use will be achieved using a variety of metrics. The goal of

Evaluation of environmental sampling methods for detection of Salmonella enterica in a large animal veterinary hospital.

Environmental surveillance for Salmonella enterica can be used for early detection of contamination; thus routine sampling is an integral component of infection control programs in hospital environments. At the Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (PUVTH), the technique regularly employed in the large animal hospital for sample collection uses sterile gauze sponges for environmental sampling, which has proven labor-intensive and time-consuming. Alternative sampling methods use Swiffer brand electrostatic wipes for environmental sample collection, which are reportedly effective and ef
