Hydrochemical associations with microbial community structure in the Reshuigou hot springs, northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Geothermal hot springs provide important windows into the links among deep hydrothermal circulation, water-rock interaction, and microbial ecology in extreme environments. This study investigated six hot-spring water samples from Reshuigou, Guide County, Qinghai Province, by integrating hydrochemical analysis, PHREEQC mineral saturation calculations, microbial community profiling, RDA, PCoA environmental fitting, and Spearman correlation analysis. The Reshuigou waters were characterized by medium to high temperature, weak alkalinity, reducing conditions, and moderate to relatively high mineral

Diverse thermophilic anaerobes from Indian hot springs show potential for bioenergy production from lignocellulosic biomass.

Thermophilic anaerobic bacteria degrade lignocellulosic biomass and produce biofuels under high-temperature, oxygen-limited conditions, yet their cultivable diversity and functional potential in Indian hot springs remain underexplored. Water and sediment samples were collected from ten geographically distinct Indian hot springs spanning a temperature range of 25-85 °C, and the sites were characterised using standard physicochemical measurements. Of the four substrates tested, cellulose, xylan, and neutral detergent fibre supported notable hydrogen-producing enrichments at 55-85 °C, while ligni

Exploring a long distance, amagmatic, across-suture orogenic geothermal system: Sri Lanka's foreland hot springs.

Hot springs in orogenic geothermal systems are usually within 5-15 km of the recharge zone, either within the mountain range or along the mountain front. However, in Sri Lanka, hot springs are in the foreland up to 100 km away from their recharge zones in the Highland Complex. The absence of a sedimentary cover provides the opportunity to study fluid pathways along basement faults and fractures. We identify a fracture network that connects the recharge and discharge zones oriented 015°-090°. Its orientation to the regional stress field indicates that the majority of the faults and fractures ar

Molecular dissemination of emerging antibiotic, biocide, and metal co-resistomes in the Himalayan hot springs.

Growing resistance among microbial communities against antimicrobial compounds, especially antibiotics, is a significant threat to living beings. With increasing antibiotic resistance in human pathogens, it is necessary to examine the habitats having community interests. In the present study, a metagenomic approach has been employed to understand the causes, dissemination, and effects of antibiotic, metal, and biocide resistomes on the microbial ecology of three hot springs, Borong, Lingdem, and Yumthang, located at different altitudes of the Sikkim Himalaya. The taxonomic assessment of these

Potential human pathogenic bacteria in five hot springs in Eritrea revealed by next generation sequencing.

Human pathogens can survive and grow in hot springs. For water quality assessment, Escherichia coli or Enterococci are the main thermotolerant enteric bacteria commonly used to estimate the load of pathogenic bacteria in water. However, most of the environmental bacteria are unculturable thus culture methods may cause bias in detection of most pathogens. Illumina sequencing can provide a more comprehensive and accurate insight into environmental bacterial pathogens, which can be used to develop better risk assessment methods and promote public health awareness. In this study, high-throughput I

Legionnaires' disease associated with habitual drinking of hot spring water.

A 57-year-old man presented with pneumonia, respiratory distress, and myelodysplastic syndrome. A diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease due to Legionella pneumophila (L. pneumophila) was established. The patient had long been drinking tap water via a conduit from a hot spring resource, from which L. pneumophila was also isolated. Both the patient's strain and the water strain of L. pneumophila were identified as serogroup 1, and the genetic relatedness between the two strains as seen by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was 87%. The patient was successfully treated with erythromycin, fluoroquinolo

Bacteria and Archaea diversity within the hot springs of Lake Magadi and Little Magadi in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Lake Magadi and little Magadi are hypersaline, alkaline lakes situated in the southern part of Kenyan Rift Valley. Solutes are supplied mainly by a series of alkaline hot springs with temperatures as high as 86 °C. Previous culture-dependent and culture-independent studies have revealed diverse groups of microorganisms thriving under these conditions. Previous culture independent studies were based on the analysis of 16S rDNA but were done on less saline lakes. For the first time, this study combined illumina sequencing and analysis of amplicons of both total community rDNA and 16S

Exploring the biotechnological potential of terrestrial hot spring microbiomes for CO2 utilisation.

BACKGROUND: Terrestrial hot springs are extreme environments shaped by geothermal heat, geogenic gases and extremes of pH and temperatures. Their gas fluxes, which include CO2, CO, H2S and SO2, mirror the chemical composition of CO2-rich waste streams. Microbial communities inhabiting these environments are typically thermotolerant or thermophilic and sustained by CO2 fixation and chemolithotrophic metabolism. Such communities may therefore provide a natural starting point for developing ex-situ, consortium-based biotechnologies capable of operating under elevated temperatures and chemically h

Thermal Endurance by a Hot-Spring-Dwelling Phylogenetic Relative of the Mesophilic Paracoccus.

High temperature growth/survival was revealed in a phylogenetic relative (SMMA_5) of the mesophilic Paracoccus isolated from the 78 to 85°C water of a Trans-Himalayan sulfur-borax spring. After 12 h at 50°C, or 45 min at 70°C, in mineral salts thiosulfate (MST) medium, SMMA_5 retained ~2% colony forming units (CFUs), whereas comparator Paracoccus had 1.5% and 0% CFU left at 50°C and 70°C, respectively. After 12 h at 50°C, the thermally conditioned sibling SMMA_5_TC exhibited an ~1.5 time increase in CFU count; after 45 min at 70°C, SMMA_5_TC had 7% of the initial CFU count. 1,000-times diluted

Characterization of novel metagenomic-derived lipase from Indian hot spring.

Extreme environments are the main source of industrially suitable biocatalysts. The non-cultivable approach of searching enzymes is known to provide ample scope to accomplish novelty for their industrial applications. Lip479 clone out of seven lipase-producing clones obtained from Taptapani hot spring was found to be optimally active at pH 8.0 and temperature 65 °C. The recombinant Lip479 was highly stable in organic solvents, methanol, DMF, DMSO, acetone, and dichloromethane. Lip479 lipase activity was enhanced in the presence of K+, Mn2+, Na+, Zn2+, and Ca2+ except for Fe3+. The ability of L

Hot spring bath and Legionella pneumonia: an association confirmed by genomic identification.

A 59-year-old man developed pneumonia 9 days after bathing in a hot spring spa. Bilateral shadows on his chest radiograph rapidly progressed after admission. He was successfully treated with erythromycin and rifampicin. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 6 was recovered from an intratrachial specimen and a significant elevation was observed in a paired indirect fluorescent antibody to Legionella. Persistent slight fever and chest rentogenographic shadows resolved after administering low-dose prednisolone to treat organizing pneumonia shown by transbronchial lung biopsy. The same serotype of Legi

Genome-resolved discovery of Candidatus Vitaminotrophota reveals carbon fixation and multi-vitamin biosynthetic potential in hot springs.

Geothermal environments harbor abundant microbial diversity, yet rare lineages remain poorly resolved, limiting understanding of ecosystem function and evolutionary innovation under energy limitation. Here, we describe Candidatus Vitaminotrophota, a previously unrecognized bacterial phylum represented by 35 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from Tengchong hot spring sediments, China. Phylogenomic analyses support a coherent internal taxonomy comprising one order, two families and four candidate genera. Metabolic reconstruction indicates a predominantly anaerobic, mixotrophic lifestyle, with

Cultivation of Acidophilic Algae Galdieria sulphuraria and Pseudochlorella sp. YKT1 in Media Derived from Acidic Hot Springs.

Microalgae possess a high potential for producing pigments, antioxidants, and lipophilic compounds for industrial applications. However, the cultivation of microalgae comes at a high cost. To reduce the cost, changes from a closed bioreactor to open pond system and from a synthetic medium to environmental or wastewater-based medium are being sought. However, the use of open pond systems is currently limited because of contamination by undesirable organisms. To overcome this issue, one strategy is to combine acidophilic algae and acidic drainage in which other organisms are unable to thrive. He

Phylogenetic Analysis and Antimicrobial Profiles of Cultured Emerging Opportunistic Pathogens (Phyla Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria) Identified in Hot Springs.

Hot spring water may harbour emerging waterborne opportunistic pathogens that can cause infections in humans. We have investigated the diversity and antimicrobial resistance of culturable emerging and opportunistic bacterial pathogens, in water and sediment of hot springs located in Limpopo, South Africa. Aerobic bacteria were cultured and identified using 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) gene sequencing. The presence of Legionella spp. was investigated using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Isolates were tested for resistance to ten antibiotics representing six different classes: β-lactam (carben
