Background: Social determinants of health are important contributors to maternal and child health outcomes. Limited existing research examines the relationship between housing instability during pregnancy and perinatal care utilization. Our objective was to evaluate whether antenatal housing instability is associated with differences in perinatal care utilization and outcomes. Materials and Methods: Participants who were surveyed during their postpartum hospitalization were considered to have experienced housing instability if they answered affirmatively to at least one of six screening items.

To assess the relationship between LGBTQ status and (1) current, recent, and lifetime experiences of housing instability, (2) risk of housing instability due to fears of interpersonal violence, and (3) perceived housing challenges, this study examined online survey data from individuals with a household income <$35,000 (N = 1,270). Analyses compared LGBTQ and cisgender heterosexual respondents using chi-square tests and logistic regression. Over their lifetime, LGBTQ respondents had increased odds of sleeping outdoors (adjusted odds ratios [AOR] = 1.580) or in a car (AOR = 1.465) because they

INTRODUCTION: Preventing and ending homelessness for women veterans, a priority of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), can be aided by identifying factors that increase their risk for housing instability.
METHODS: This study relied on data from the Veterans Health Administration's universal screen for housing instability from Fiscal Year 2013 to 2016, and administrative data from electronic medical records. Using logistic regression, we compared 2 groups of women veterans: those who consistently had stable housing and those who transitioned to unstable housing after a period of housing s

INTRODUCTION: Multiple social determinants of health have been linked to gun violence; however, the specific role of housing instability (HI) in contributing to firearm homicide rates remains underexplored. We hypothesized that greater HI would be associated with higher firearm homicide rates.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed 2021 firearm homicide data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention across the 50 largest US metropolitan statistical areas. Measures of HI were collected from the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developm

IMPORTANCE: The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) partners with community organizations (grantees) across the US to provide temporary financial assistance (TFA) to vulnerable veterans through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. The goal of TFA for housing-related expenses is to prevent homelessness or to quickly house those who have become homeless.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the cost-effectiveness of the SSVF program with TFA vs without TFA as an intervention for veterans who are experiencing housing insecurity.

INTRODUCTION: Housing instability is a significant contributor to poor health but remains understudied among surgical patients. We evaluated the association between housing instability and rates of unplanned surgical procedures, as well as resultant health and financial outcomes, for patients with access-sensitive conditions.
METHODS: Using the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project National Inpatient Sample, we identified patients who underwent one of four selected procedures for access-sensitive surgical conditions (abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, colectomy, incisional hernia repair, and

More than a half million children are confirmed as victims of maltreatment by the child welfare system each year. Children from unstably housed families are over-represented in child mal-treatment reports, and a growing body of evidence links housing problems to maltreatment and Child Protective Services (CPS); investigation. The present study applies two propensity score analysis approaches-greedy matching and propensity score weighting-to data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study to move toward a causal explanation of child mal-treatment behaviors among mothers in low-income

This study developed risk models for returns to housing instability (that is, homelessness and unstable doubling-up situations) among families exiting emergency shelter. Participants included 446 families randomly assigned to receive priority offers of long-term housing subsidies and 578 families randomly assigned to usual care in the Family Options Study, a multisite experiment designed to test the impact of various housing and service interventions for homeless families. Relationships between family features recorded at shelter entry and returns to housing instability 20 months later were ex

BACKGROUND: The negative consequences of parental substance abuse are significant and longstanding for children. Among other risks, these youth are more likely to experience housing instability. The most common predictor of a child not living with their biological parent is parental substance use. Research shows that these youth are at higher risks of housing instability; however, little is known about their housing experiences, from their perspective. This study explored the housing experiences of youth affected by parental substance abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans face elevated risk of suicide and homelessness, with housing instability being a significant, independent risk factor among this population. Addressing housing instability through primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention services is crucial for improving health and mortality outcomes, though research remains limited. The objective of this study is to assess the association between receipt of primary, secondary, and tertiary homelessness prevention services and risk of suicide and all-cause mortality among Veterans within 24 months of experiencing housing instability.

BACKGROUND: Though disability and housing instability are discussed separately in public health literature, few studies address families at their intersection. As a result, little is known about families who experience both homelessness and disability, how many receive disability benefits like SSI and SSDI, or the influence of those benefits on health-promoting outcomes like housing stability and self-sufficiency. Moreover, no previous research compares the ability of different housing and service interventions to increase disability benefit access.
OBJECTIVE: We examine relationships between

Youth homelessness is widely studied, yet little research traces developmental housing pathways across time. This study used a life-course lens to explore how youth navigate instability from childhood into emerging adulthood, and how connection, structure, and meaning-making shape recovery. By mapping temporal movement, we identify turning points that shift trajectories toward stability. Eight youth (ages 21-26) enrolled in a cash-transfer program participated in Life History Calendar interviews to reconstruct housing trajectories and contextual life events. Transcripts and calendars were anal

PURPOSE: Existing classifications of housing instability often oversimplify the diverse experiences of unstable housing among youth, potentially obscuring varied health risks. This study addresses this gap by examining the nuanced classification of housing instability and its association with behavioral health outcomes among U.S. high school students.
METHODS: Data from the 2021 and 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (n = 26,219) were utilized. Housing status was categorized into four levels: housing stability, uncertain housing stability, housing instability, and severe housing instability. Ou

PURPOSE: Adolescent mental health challenges in the United States have reached critical levels. This is a sensitive developmental period during which exposure to household-level hardships, such as food insecurity and housing instability, and adverse neighborhood environments may heighten vulnerability to mental, emotional, developmental, and behavioral health (MEDBH). This study examined the pathways through which household-level and neighborhood factors influence adolescent MEDBH.
METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health, logistic regression mode

While IPV is often studied as a predictor of housing insecurity, few U.S. studies explore how different forms of housing instability may contribute to intimate partner violence (IPV) risk. Using a mixed-methods approach and a cross-sectional design, this study examined the association between four housing instability domains and IPV among a sample of tenants that had either experienced eviction or were at high risk for eviction. Tenants in Harris and Travis counties (Texas, USA) completed an online survey (n = 1085; March-July 2024). Housing instability was assessed across four domains: homele

Although housing instability moderates suicide risk among military veterans, it is unknown whether suicide methods differ between stably and unstably housed veterans. The Veterans Health Administration screened 5,849,870 veterans for housing instability between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2016. Death data were from the National Death Index. Unstably housed veterans had greater hazards of suicide mortality by jumping from a height (aHR = 3.07, 95%CI = 1.20-7.98) and unspecified means (aHR = 2.80, 95%CI = 1.63-4.80) than stably housed veterans. Translating these findings into optimal suici

Although one in four women in the United States experience severe intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetimes and are at greater risk for homelessness and housing insecurity than women who have not experienced IPV, the factors increasing the vulnerability of women with an IPV history to housing instability have not been examined. This cross-sectional study utilized baseline data from interviews with 218 IPV-exposed women from diverse ethnoracial backgrounds participating with their children in the Kids' Club and the Mom's Empowerment Program, joint interventions designed to improve outc

OBJECTIVE: To develop and test predictive models of housing instability and homelessness based on responses to a brief screening instrument administered throughout the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).
DATA SOURCES/STUDY SETTING: Electronic medical record data from 5.8 million Veterans who responded to the VHA's Homelessness Screening Clinical Reminder (HSCR) between October 2012 and September 2015.
STUDY DESIGN: We randomly selected 80% of Veterans in our sample to develop predictive models. We evaluated the performance of both logistic regression and random forests-a machine learning a

This paper reports results of mixed methods, population survey of housing instability, and homelessness. Child welfare personnel conducted the Quick Risks and Assets for Family Triage (QRAFT), a three-question screening tool intended to identify housing instability and homelessness. The QRAFT requires users to assess family housing history, current housing arrangement, and current housing condition, on a four-point scale from "asset/not a risk" to "severe risk." The QRAFT was completed among 6828 families undergoing new child maltreatment investigations. Approximately 5.4% of families demonstr

IMPORTANCE: Homelessness is associated with negative health outcomes and increased health care costs. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program provides housing-related financial assistance and other supports to veterans experiencing housing instability; however, little is known regarding short-term assistance interventions with a prevention focus.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate potential impacts of the SSVF program in mortality and health care cost outcomes over 3 years following program entry.
