Extracellular matrix regulates human airway smooth muscle cell migration.

Extracellular matrix proteins regulate the survival and proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Their effect on airway smooth muscle cell migration is not known. Their role in leukotriene-primed (0.1 microM leukotriene E4) chemotaxis of cultured human airway smooth muscle cells towards platelet-derived growth factor BB (1 ng.mL(-1)) was investigated. Migration of cells was greater on membranes coated with collagens III and V and fibronectin compared to collagen I, elastin and laminin (all 10 microg.mL(-1)). Concentration-dependent promotion of migration was observed on collagen I (1,000>10 micro

CD112 Supports Lymphatic Migration of Human Dermal Dendritic Cells.

Dendritic cell (DC) migration from peripheral tissues via afferent lymphatic vessels to draining lymph nodes (dLNs) is important for the organism's immune regulation and immune protection. Several lymphatic endothelial cell (LEC)-expressed adhesion molecules have thus far been found to support transmigration and movement within the lymphatic vasculature. In this study, we investigated the contribution of CD112, an adhesion molecule that we recently found to be highly expressed in murine LECs, to this process. Performing in vitro assays in the murine system, we found that transmigration of bone

Aquaporin 3 promotes human extravillous trophoblast migration and invasion.

PROBLEM: Does aquaporin 3 (AQP3) affect the migration and invasion of human extravillous trophoblast (HTR8/Svneo) cells? METHOD OF STUDY: A lentivirus infection system was used to construct stable cell lines with either AQP3 knockdown or overexpression. RT-PCR and western blotting were used to verify the efficiencies of AQP3 knockdown or overexpression in HTR8/Svneo cells at mRNA and protein levels, respectively. Cell Counting Kit-8 and flow cytometry assays were used to detect the influence of AQP3 knockdown or overexpression on proliferation and apoptosis of HTR8/Svneo cells. In addition, w

Human cytomegalovirus infection inhibits CXCL12- mediated migration and invasion of human extravillous cytotrophoblasts.

BACKGROUND: During the first trimester of pregnancy, a series of tightly regulated interactions govern the formation of a highly invasive population of fetal-derived extravillous cytotrophoblasts (EVT). Successful pregnancy is dependent on efficient invasion of the uterine wall and maternal spiral arteries by EVT. Dysregulated trophoblast invasion is associated with intrauterine growth restriction, birth defects, spontaneous abortion and preeclampsia. A number of soluble growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines modulate this process, fine-tuning the temporal and spatial aspects of cytotrophob

Prehistoric global migration of vanishing gut microbes with humans.

The gut microbiome is crucial for health and is affected strongly by lifestyle1. Many microorganisms commonly found in non-industrialized populations are disappearing or have become extinct in industrialized populations2-6. Studying which microorganisms have been long-term residents of the human gut and may have co-evolved with humans2,7,8 could provide insights into how microbial biodiversity loss affects human health. However, the genetic complexities of microbial evolution and the plasticity of gut microbiome composition have made it challenging to resolve the evolutionary history of these

Ontogenetic migration of the mental foramen in Neandertals and modern humans.

Since the nineteenth century, researchers have noted that Neandertal and modern human adults differ in mental foramen position, although the ontogenetic changes in the position of this feature have only recently come under the scrutiny of paleoanthropologists. Research on mental foramen position has focused on whether this feature is inferior to a particular tooth. However, tooth position may not be a reliable indicator of mental foramen position because of variability in tooth size within and between taxa and during eruption events. As opposed to observing the mental foramen with respect to t

Gastrointestinal sounds and migrating motor complex in fasted humans.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relationships among gastrointestinal sounds, gastrointestinal manometric findings, and small intestinal transit time in healthy fasted humans. METHODS: Gastrointestinal sounds acquired with two microphones attached to the upper and lower abdominal walls of healthy subjects were quantified with a computer-aided sound analysis program. Antroduodenal contractions were recorded by manometry. Small intestinal transit time was measured by breath hydrogen testing after intraduodenal administration of lactulose. RESULTS: The sum of the gastrointestinal sound amplitudes

Experimental study of the migration of charcoal particles in the human mouth.

Suspensions of charcoal in water, placed in the vestibule on one side of the mouth, spread within about 5 min to the dorsum of the tongue and the hard palate on the same side but did not cross the mid-line. When placed centrally under the tongue, the movement of charcoal was equally rapid but it spread over the whole surface of the mouth.

The role of intra-abdominal pressure in human testicular migration.

OBJECTIVES: This review aims to study the role of the abdominal wall in testicular migration process during the human fetal period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a descriptive review of the literature about the role of the abdominal wall in testicular migration during the human fetal period. RESULTS: The rise in intra-abdominal pressure is a supporting factor for testicular migration. This process has two phases: the abdominal and the inguinal-scrotal stages. The passage of the testis through the inguinal canal occurs very quickly between 21 and 25 WPC. Bilateral cryptorchidism in Prun

Human Migration and the Spread of the Nematode Parasite Wuchereria bancrofti.

The human disease lymphatic filariasis causes the debilitating effects of elephantiasis and hydrocele. Lymphatic filariasis currently affects the lives of 90 million people in 52 countries. There are three nematodes that cause lymphatic filariasis, Brugia malayi, Brugia timori, and Wuchereria bancrofti, but 90% of all cases of lymphatic filariasis are caused solely by W. bancrofti (Wb). Here we use population genomics to reconstruct the probable route and timing of migration of Wb strains that currently infect Africa, Haiti, and Papua New Guinea (PNG). We used selective whole genome amplificat

Human migration and the spread of malaria parasites to the New World.

We examined the mitogenomes of a large global collection of human malaria parasites to explore how and when Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax entered the Americas. We found evidence of a significant contribution of African and South Asian lineages to present-day New World malaria parasites with additional P. vivax lineages appearing to originate from Melanesia that were putatively carried by the Australasian peoples who contributed genes to Native Americans. Importantly, mitochondrial lineages of the P. vivax-like species P. simium are shared by platyrrhine monkeys and humans in the Atlantic

Polysialic acid enhances the migration and invasion of human cytotrophoblasts.

Polysialic acid (polySia) is a large, cell-surface linear homopolymer composed of α2,8-linked sialic acid residues. Most extensively studied in the nervous system, this unique glycan modulates development by enhancing cell migration and regulating differentiation. PolySia also functions in developing and adult immune systems and is a signature of many cancers. In this study, we demonstrated that human placental trophoblasts, an epithelial lineage, also display this glycan. Cytotrophoblasts and syncytiotrophoblasts expressed polySia in the first trimester and downregulated it during the course

Attenuation of human neutrophil migration and function by uropathogenic bacteria.

The establishment of bacterial infections at mucosal epithelial surfaces is determined by the balance of virulence attributes of the pathogen with the activity of innate host defenses. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) are key responders in many bacterial infections, but the mechanisms by which pathogens subvert these early responses to establish infection are largely undefined. Here, we model early interactions between human PMN and the primary cause of urinary tract infections, namely uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Our objective was to define virulence phenotypes of uropathogens tha

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor in the human epididymis and semen.

During epididymal transit, mammalian spermatozoa acquire new proteins involved in the acquisition of motility and of male gamete fertilising ability. We have previously shown that membranous vesicles called epididymosomes are involved in the transfer of epididymal-originating proteins to spermatozoa. The cytokine macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is one of these proteins but the role played by MIF in relation to epididymal sperm maturation still remains unclear. As this protein has already been shown to bear different functions depending on its location, we investigated its distribu

Analysis of testicular migration during the fetal period in humans.

PURPOSE: We present an analysis concerning the testicular migration and its position correlated to body weight, crown-rump length and gestational age during the fetal period in humans without congenital abnormalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied bilaterally 142 testes taken from 71 fresh human fetuses between 10 and 35 weeks after conception. The fetuses were also evaluated in regard to crown-rump length and body weight. The position of the testes was correlated to the fetal parameters. RESULTS: In 37 fetuses (74 testes) at 10 to 23 weeks after conception only 7 testes (9.45%) had migr

Effects of steroids on the in vitro forward migration of human spermatozoa.

The effects of 14 steroids at concentrations between 0.1 and 10 micrograms/ml on human spermatozoal forward migration in vitro were tested. Oestradiol-17 beta at a concentration of 0.1 microgram/ml significantly activated spermatozoal forward migration in ejaculated human semen. However, the effect of oestradiol-17 beta at concentrations of 2 and 10 micrograms/ml on ejaculated human sperm motility was not significantly different from the control where no steroid was added. Progesterone, testosterone, oestriol, oestrone, oestradiol-17d, and ethinyl oestradiol significantly inhibited human sperm

S1P differentially regulates migration of human ovarian cancer and human ovarian surface epithelial cells.

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) arises from the epithelial layer covering the surface of ovaries and i.p. metastasis is commonly observed at diagnosis. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a bioactive lipid signaling molecule, is potentially involved in EOC tumorigenesis. We have found that S1P is elevated in human EOC ascites. We show that physiologically relevant concentrations of S1P stimulate migration and invasion of EOC cells but inhibit migration of human ovarian surface epithelial (HOSE) cells. In addition, S1P inhibits lysophosphatidic acid (LPA)-induced cell migration in HOSE but not in EO

Cancer cell migration under control of human cathelicidin LL-37.

Cancer cell migration is a key step in the metastatic cascade. Understanding its mechanisms represents one of the greatest challenges in modern oncology. Both in vitro and in vivo experimental models and mathematical descriptions of movement dynamics are used to study this complex phenomenon. These models allow for the quantitative characterization of movement trajectories based on cell motion parameters. Within the tumor microenvironment, the human cathelicidin LL-37 holds a special place as a regulator of these processes. This article summarizes current knowledge (until July 2025) on LL-37's
