Herpes simplex virus infection masquerading as condyloma acuminata in a patient with HIV disease.

Verrucous lesions in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease may be caused by viruses other than the human papillomavirus. We describe a 32-year-old HIV-positive black man who presented with a verrucous lesion of the intergluteal cleft that clinically resembled condyloma acuminata or verrucous carcinoma. Histopathological examination revealed the changes of herpes virus infection, and culture of the tissue confirmed the presence of herpes simplex virus. Human papillomavirus was not detected by in situ hybridization or the polymerase chain reaction. Significant regression of th

Identification of herpesviruses types 1 to 8 and human papillomavirus in acute apical abscesses.

INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that viruses, especially herpesviruses, can play a role in the pathogenesis of marginal and apical periodontitis. This study aimed to detect herpesviruses types 1 to 8, namely herpes simplex virus (HSV-1/2), varicella zoster virus (VZV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6), human herpesvirus-7 (HHV-7), and human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) as well as human papillomavirus (HPV) in acute apical abscesses. METHODS: Twenty-four samples were taken by aspiration of the purulent exudate from acute apical abscesses. DNA ext

Virological perspectives of the current situation of oncogenic viruses in Egypt: a review.

Oncogenic viruses play a pernicious role in the development of cancer, causing various tumors in humans and animals. These viruses are of public health importance in developing nations. Worldwide, about 15–20% of cancer cases are related to viral infections. About 12% of all cancers in humans are attributed to oncoviruses. However, the accurate rate of cancers attributed to oncoviruses across all animal cancers remains uncertain. In some species, such as chickens and cats, oncoviruses are responsible for approximately 80–100% of specific cancer cases. The first oncovirus reported in humans was

Mechanisms of Viral Oncogenesis: DNA and RNA Viruses in Human Cancer.

With 13% of global tumorigenesis related to pathogens and 2.2 million new tumour cases related to viral infections every year, the role played by viruses in tumorigenesis cannot be ignored. At present, the viruses that have been identified as carcinogenic substances are EB virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, Kaposi's sarcoma virus, human immunodeficiency virus type 1, human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1, human papillomavirus, Merkel cell polyomavirus, and BK virus. There are also a number of viruses which have not been designated as carcinogens, but which are also closely related t

Co-infection of Epstein-Barr virus and human papillomavirus in human tumorigenesis.

Viral infections contribute to approximately 12% of cancers worldwide, with the vast majority occurring in developing countries and areas. Two DNA viruses, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human papillomavirus (HPV), are associated with 38% of all virus-associated cancers. The probability of one patient infected with these two distinct types of viruses is increasing. Here, we summarize the co-infection of EBV and HPV in human malignancies and address the possible mechanisms for the co-infection of EBV and HPV during tumorigenesis.

DNA viruses and human cancer.

This review examines some of the evidence which aetiologically implicates various DNA viruses (primarily papillomavirus, hepatitis B virus and Epstein-Barr virus) in certain human cancers (cervical carcinoma, primary liver cell carcinoma, Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, respectively). The evidence includes: presence of viral DNA, RNA and proteins in tumours (and cell lines derived from them); occurrence of viruses with apparently different oncogenic potential; their ability to transform cell lines in vitro or cause tumours in animals; epidemiological and serological data. The Human Bone Marrow Is Host to the DNAs of Several Viruses.

The long-term impact of viruses residing in the human bone marrow (BM) remains unexplored. However, chronic inflammatory processes driven by single or multiple viruses could significantly alter hematopoiesis and immune function. We performed a systematic analysis of the DNAs of 38 viruses in the BM. We detected, by quantitative PCRs and next-generation sequencing, viral DNA in 88.9% of the samples, up to five viruses in one individual. Included were, among others, several herpesviruses, hepatitis B virus, Merkel cell polyomavirus and, unprecedentedly, human papillomavirus 31. Given the reactiv

High risk of human papillomavirus infection and cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions among women with symptomatic human immunodeficiency virus infection.

We investigated the relationship of human papillomavirus (by cervicovaginal lavage and Southern blot), human immunodeficiency virus, and squamous intraepithelial lesions in 96 high-risk women in the Bronx, New York. Antibodies for human immunodeficiency virus were detected in 51 (53%) women. Of the 33 women with symptomatic human immunodeficiency virus infection, 23 (70%) had human papillomavirus infection compared with 4 of 18 (22%) asymptomatic women who were human immunodeficiency virus seropositive and 10 of 45 (22%) uninfected women (p less than 0.0001). Interplay between autophagy and apoptosis in human viral pathogenesis.

Autophagy and apoptosis are two pivotal programmed cell death pathways that regulate vital physiological processes, ranging from cellular development to intracellular homeostasis. These pathways also act as key battlegrounds in host-pathogen interactions during viral infection. This comprehensive review explores the dual regulatory mechanisms controlling autophagy and apoptosis triggered by clinically significant human viruses. These include DNA viruses-such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), hepatitis viruses, human papillomavirus (HPV), and human bocavirus (HBoV)-and RN

Whole-Transcriptome Sequencing-Based Profiling of the Cutaneous Virome in Patients with Secondary Immunodeficiency.

Most viral infections can be self-limited, with no requirement for medical intervention. However, the same viruses can cause severe diseases in patients with compromised immunity due to single-gene diseases, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or hematologic malignancies or those receiving immunosuppressive drugs. Occasionally, these immunocompromised patients harbor >1 infectious agent, requiring several concomitant diagnostic tests. We have developed, to our knowledge, a previously unreported whole-transcriptome sequencing-based pipeline that allows virome profiling, quantitation, and expre

Structural optimization of a retrograde trafficking inhibitor that protects cells from infections by human polyoma- and papillomaviruses.

Human polyoma- and papillomaviruses are non-enveloped DNA viruses that cause severe pathologies and mortalities. Under circumstances of immunosuppression, JC polyomavirus causes a fatal demyelinating disease called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and the BK polyomavirus is the etiological agent of polyomavirus-induced nephropathy and hemorrhagic cystitis. Human papillomavirus type 16, another non-enveloped DNA virus, is associated with the development of cancers in tissues like the uterine cervix and oropharynx. Currently, there are no approved drugs or vaccines to treat or pr

Viruses in human cancers.

Viruses may contribute to the development of human tumors by different mechanisms: indirectly by inducing immunosuppression or by modifying the host cell genome without persistence of viral DNA; directly by inducing oncoproteins or by altering the expression of host cell proteins at the site of viral DNA integration. Human cancers associated with papillomavirus, hepatitis B virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and human T cell leukemia-lymphoma virus infections are responsible for approximately 15 percent of the worldwide cancer incidence. Cancer of the cervix and hepatocellular carcinoma account for ab

Human papillomavirus type 6 in grade I transitional cell carcinoma of the urethra.

Of 4 patients who underwent cystourethroscopy, biopsy and laser excision of suspected urethral condylomata acuminata 3 had coexistent grade I papillary transitional cell carcinoma of the urethra. Human papillomavirus type 6 messenger ribonucleic acid was demonstrated within biopsy specimens using tritium-labeled single-stranded antisense ribonucleic acid probes. Compared to condylomata the papillary transitional epithelium expressed less viral message, which might be expected in an epithelium that does not show full squamous epithelial or koilocytotic differentiation. 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy for anal canal condyloma acuminatum: A series of 19 cases and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Anal canal condyloma acuminata are common, sexually transmitted lesions, most often caused by the human papillomavirus. The relatively high recurrence rate of anal canal condyloma acuminata can be attributed to the unsuccessful elimination of viruses in areas of subclinical and latent infection. This study aimed to observe and evaluate the effectiveness of 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy combined with monitoring of human papillomavirus load changes in patients with anal canal condyloma acuminata. METHODS: A total of 19 patients with anal genital warts were recruited for

DNA viruses in human cancer: an integrated overview on fundamental mechanisms of viral carcinogenesis.

The first experimental data suggesting that neoplasm development in animals might be influenced by infectious agents were published in the early 1900s. However, conclusive evidence that DNA viruses play a role in the pathogenesis of some human cancers only emerged in the 1950s, when Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was discovered within Burkitt lymphoma cells. Besides EBV, other DNA viruses consistently associated with human cancers are the hepatitis B virus (HBV), human papillomavirus (HPV), and Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV). Although each virus has unique features, it is becoming clearer that al

Novel avian papillomaviruses identified in a south polar skua sampled on Ross Island, Antarctica.

Papillomaviruses are small circular DNA viruses that infect epithelial cells of their hosts. Avian papillomaviruses are poorly sampled/documented compared to those infecting humans. We used a viral metagenomic approach to identify viruses from the oral swab taken from a deceased south polar skua (Stercorarius maccormicki) found at Cape Royds, Ross Island, Antarctica in late 2024. We identified three papillomaviruses and determined their complete genomes, Stercorarius maccormicki papillomavirus (SmacPV) 1-3. SmacPV1 is the most divergent of the three SmacPVs, sharing 62% genome-wide pairwise id

Resolution of recalcitrant human papillomavirus gingival infection with topical cidofovir.

Cidofovir, a purine nucleotide analogue of cytosine, is a promising new drug that acts against a wide number of DNA viruses. In 1997, the Food and Drug Administration approved intravenous cidofovir for the treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Recent studies have shown cidofovir (1% gel or cream) to be effective for the treatment of recalcitrant and unmanageable viral cutaneous lesions induced by herpes, pox, and papillomavirus families. We report the case of a 45-year-old man who had been diagnosed as having acquired immunodeficiency syndr
