Perception of quality of life for cats and dogs of low-income Spanish and English-speaking veterinary clients attending problem focused or routine veterinary visits is an important area of focus for community based veterinary service providers. Using a qualitative approach, 50 New York City based American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) veterinary clients completed semi-structured interviews as well as a survey about their perception of life with their pets. Veterinary clients shared both human-animal bond (HAB) related and quality of life (QoL) related factors in thei

Around one in ten people seeking shelter from homelessness in the United Kingdom have a companion animal, most commonly a dog. Dog ownership when homeless can pose a barrier to accessing healthcare and accommodation, and may force individuals to sleep on the streets. People experiencing homelessness with a dog are therefore a stigmatised minority within a minority, often invisible to support services and hard to reach. The bond between human and canine in these situations is usually strong; the dog is often the most significant 'other' in that person's life. Failure to accommodate this relatio

Basic animal studies and human imaging studies have contributed to our understanding of the psychobiology of love and attachment. There are overlaps and distinctions in the neuronal circuitry of maternal love, romantic love, and long-term attachment. In these circuits, important molecules, which have been demonstrated to play a role in the psychobiology of social bonding include dopamine, serotonin, opioids, oxytocin, and vasopressin. Particular genetic and environmental variations contribute to social-bonding phenotypes, consistent with an evolutionary perspective on the value of these behavi

Social behaviour is fundamental to survival and adaptation, relying on complex, interacting neurobiological systems in which the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) and the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) play pivotal roles in regulating social bonding, motivation, and reward processing. This review synthesises recent advances in understanding the bidirectional interactions between OT and DA within key nodes of the brain's reward circuitry, including the nucleus accumbens, ventral tegmental area, amygdala, and medial prefrontal cortex. We examine how these interactions support a wide range of social beh

While experiencing homelessness with a pet can present unique challenges, it can also provide physical health, mental health, and social benefits. A Photovoice project with adolescents and adults experiencing homelessness with a pet was conducted in Seattle, Washington, USA in 2018-2019 to explore the experience of homelessness with a pet, the impact of the human-animal bond on the health of each, and to drive policy changes to help support people experiencing homelessness (PEH) with pets. Twenty-five people spanning a range of age groups, genders, and living situations were recruited primaril

Veterinary palliative medicine (VPM) is an emerging discipline within clinical veterinary science that addresses the comfort and quality of life of animals affected by chronic or terminal illness. The implications of VPM extend beyond the individual patient. From a One Health perspective, end-of-life veterinary practice encompasses animal welfare, caregiver well-being, and environmental sustainability. This paper aims to present a multidisciplinary synthesis that connects these dimensions. It highlights the health benefits and the emotional costs of the human-animal bond; the psychological ris

Sensory decline, particularly vision and hearing loss, is nearly universal in aging dogs and cats yet remains underrecognized in general practice. These changes are often mistaken for cognitive dysfunction or normal aging, but they significantly affect quality of life, behavior, and the human-animal bond. This review provides busy clinicians with practical, evidence-based strategies for identifying and managing sensory decline, including screening approaches, diagnostic tools, and real-world management tactics. Emphasis is placed on proactive care, client education, and the interplay between s

Pair bond formation has been investigated much less than many other social behaviors, perhaps in part because traditional laboratory mice and rats do not exhibit this behavior. However, pair bonding is common among monogamous animals such as the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). In this review, we discuss how the prairie vole has been used as a model system to investigate the neurobiology of pair bonding. Descriptions include neuroanatomical differences between monogamous and non-monogamous voles, as well as how manipulations of vasopressin, oxytocin, dopamine, and corticosterone systems af

Traditional methods for managing free-roaming cats in Australia primarily depend on legislation and enforcement to achieve compliance. State laws and local regulations mandate confinement, sterilization, registration, and identification and limit the number of cats kept, with penalties for breaches. However, these strategies fail to address underlying issues like financial constraints in low-income areas and the prevalence of semi-owned cats. Containment mandates often result in increased complaints, shelter intake, and euthanasia, without effectively reducing cat-related problems. Research sh

Veterinary hospice provides a compassionate, patient-centered approach to end-of-life care that emphasizes comfort, dignity, and quality of life over curative intent. This article outlines the principles of hospice care, including patient selection, multimodal pain and symptom management, environmental adaptations, and integration with geriatric care. It highlights the importance of proactive communication, quality-of-life assessment tools, and euthanasia planning to guide families through difficult decisions. By supporting both patients and caregivers, veterinary hospice strengthens the human

SNAP-25, a membrane-associated protein of the nerve terminal, is specifically cleaved by botulinum neurotoxins serotypes A and E, which cause human and animal botulism by blocking neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction. Here we show that these two metallo-endopeptidase toxins cleave SNAP-25 at two distinct carboxyl-terminal sites. Serotype A catalyses the hydrolysis of the Gln197-Arg198 peptide bond, while serotype E cleaves the Arg180-Ile181 peptide lineage. These results indicate that the carboxyl-terminal region of SNAP-25 plays a crucial role in the multi-protein complex th

When pet dogs demonstrate certain serious problem behaviors, this may lead owners to choose behavioral euthanasia. However, research on behavioral euthanasia of pet dogs is sparse and previously published papers have not specifically sampled owners who made the decision to euthanize for behavior. The Behavioral Euthanasia in Pet Dogs Questionnaire was created to collect a wide range of information from dog owners who made behavioral euthanasia decisions. Using this survey, we explored the types of behaviors associated with behavioral euthanasia. Human-directed aggression, especially toward adu

Understanding grief in non-human animals poses conceptual and empirical challenges. Unlike humans, whose grief is readily identified through affective, cognitive and behavioural manifestations, recognizing it in other species is complicated by differences in expression and by anthropomorphic bias. Research on grief has taken several approaches. Observational studies in the ethological tradition have documented grief-like responses (withdrawal, vocalizations and changes in social interaction) across diverse taxa. Separation studies have shown that disrupting attachment produces depressive-like

Psittacines embody in an ideal fashion the child-like characteristics that humans adore. Animal lovers are unable to resist their expressive eyes, brightly coloured plumage, tameness and mimicry of human speech. The desire of pet-owners to have a tame, speaking bird with a very strong bond to its owner is achieved through hand-rearing, but this results in psychoreactive behavioural abnormalities in these highly social birds due to abnormal fixation. The signs and causes of these behavioural abnormalities, also called cage neuroses, are explained. The complex of feather-plucking, feather-ingest

PURPOSE: Prison-based animal programs are becoming increasingly common in North America. The majority focus on community and animal well-being, with less explicit therapeutic goals for human participants. The purpose of this paper is to measure the objectives of a canine animal-assisted therapy (AAT) program in a Canadian psychiatric prison and examine whether the program supports inmates' correctional plans.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A modified instrumental case study design was applied with three inmates over a 24-AAT-session program. Quantitative and qualitative AAT session data were co

The formation of enduring relationships between adult mates (i.e., pair bonds) is an integral aspect of human social behavior and has been implicated in both physical and psychological health. However, due to the inherent complexity of these bonds and the relative rarity with which they are formed in other mammalian species, we know surprisingly little about their underlying neurobiology. Over the past few decades, the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) has emerged as an animal model of pair bonding. Research in this socially monogamous rodent has provided valuable insight into the neurobiolo

In this narrative review, we summarize the current state of knowledge on novel isoquinolinium chlorofumarate diesters and pinnatoxins as potential neuromuscular blocking agents for modern anesthesia. Isoquinolinium derivatives gantacurium, CW002, CW011, and CW1759-50 are discussed due to promising initial findings, with animal and human studies presented to assess which agent may have the greatest potential for future clinical use. The approval process for gantacurium has reached Phase III clinical trials, but further trials are no longer ongoing. CW002 has undergone animal and human testing,

The loss of a companion animal can provoke grief whose intensity rivals human bereavement, yet its biological basis remains largely uncharted. This structured narrative review synthesizes neurobiological, endocrinological, immunological, and psychosocial evidence into a mechanistic framework offered not as established fact but as a source of testable hypotheses. We trace the substrates of the human-animal bond across six interacting systems and propose how disruption of each upon an animal's death may drive grief. Three carry comparatively robust analogical support (oxytocinergic signaling, hy

Farnesyltransferase (FTase) is a zinc enzyme that has been the subject of attention in anti-cancer research over the past. In this study, phytochemicals from Curcuma longa L., Taraxacum officinale, and Spondias mombin plants were screened for their inhibitory potentials on the human farnesyltransferase. A three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) model for the inhibition of farnesyltransferase was generated and the inhibition of farnesyltransferase by the hit, ascorbic acid was validated in an animal model of breast cancer. The lead compound, ascorbic acid makes

Plasmalogens are ether phospholipids. They have a vinyl ether bond at sn-1 and polyunsaturated fatty acids at sn-2, and are abundant in marine- and animal-derived foods. Their unique structures may help maintain membrane organization, redox balance, and signaling. Human studies show that plasmalogen levels decline with age, and the drop is even sharper in Alzheimer's disease (AD), suggesting a link between dietary lipids and neurodegeneration. This narrative review summarizes dietary sources, molecular composition, and metabolism of plasmalogens, focusing on how structural diversity affects st
