Further Insights Into the Interaction of Human and Animal Complement Regulator Factor H With Viable Lyme Disease Spirochetes.

Spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) complex differ in their ability to establish infection and to survive in diverse vertebrate hosts. Association with and adaption to various hosts most likely correlates with the spirochetes' ability to acquire complement regulator factor H (FH) to overcome the host's innate immune response. Here we assessed binding of serum FH from human and various animals including bovine, cat, chicken, dog, horse, mouse, rabbit, and rat to viable B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.), B. afzelii, B. garinii, B. spielmanii, B. valaisiana,

Human-animal interactions and bat coronavirus spillover potential among rural residents in Southern China.

Human interaction with animals has been implicated as a primary risk factor for several high impact zoonoses, including many bat-origin viral diseases. However the animal-to-human spillover events that lead to emerging diseases are rarely observed or clinically examined, and the link between specific interactions and spillover risk is poorly understood. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted biological-behavioral surveillance among rural residents in Yunnan, Guangxi, and Guangdong districts of Southern China, where we have identified a number of SARS-related coronaviruses in bats. Serum

A holistic review of fatherhood in humans and non-human animals: mechanisms of fatherhood, effects on fathers themselves, and interactions of fathers with others.

Fathers are often the forgotten parent in mammals; due to the necessity of lactation for the survival of infants, mothers and motherhood are by far the better studied sex (a rather unusual phenomenon among most topics). However, the study of fathers has experienced a recent surge in interest. Here we review literature from a neuroscience, endocrine, and psychological perspective, on the mechanisms of fatherhood and roles of fathers across species, including the ways that fathering affects mental health, interactions with others, and partner relationships in humans and animals. Limitations and

[Effects of harmful trace elements on iron, zinc and copper: their interactions in animals and humans. II. Lead].

Toxic effect of lead is related, among others, to metabolic interactions with essential trace elements i.e. iron, zinc and copper. Lead stimulates urinary excretion of these elements interfering with their reabsorption in kidney as well as inhibits ceruloplasmin activity in plasma, ferrochelatase activity in reticulocytes and copper- and zinc-dependent superoxide dismutase activity in tissues--with all functional consequences for organism. Iron, zinc and copper deficiency results in increased lead toxicity through considerable enhancement of lead absorption from intestinal tract, producing gre

AnchorCrafter: Animate Cyber-Anchors Selling Your Products via Human-Object Interacting Video Generation.

The generation of anchor-style product promotion videos presents promising opportunities in e-commerce, advertising, and consumer engagement. Despite advancements in pose-guided human video generation, creating product promotion videos remains challenging. In addressing this challenge, we identify the integration of human-object interactions (HOI) into pose-guided human video generation as a core issue. To this end, we introduce AnchorCrafter, a novel diffusion-based system designed to generate 2D videos featuring a target human and a customized object, achieving high visual fidelity and contr

A participatory rapid ethnographic assessment protocol for studying human-animal-material interactions in veterinary clinical practice.

Veterinary clinical practice involves complex interactions among clinicians, learners, clients, animals, material objects, and built environments. These interactions shape how care is delivered, how students learn, and how practitioners respond to changing circumstances in real time. However, existing qualitative and ethnographic methods often lack a replicable protocol for capturing how human, animal, and material contributions jointly shape clinical practice as it unfolds. This methodology article presents a participatory Rapid Ethnographic Assessment protocol designed for veterinary educato

Neuro-immune interactions of neural stem cell transplants: from animal disease models to human trials.

Stem cell technology is a promising branch of regenerative medicine that is aimed at developing new approaches for the treatment of severely debilitating human diseases, including those affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Despite the increasing understanding of the mechanisms governing their biology, the application of stem cell therapeutics remains challenging. The initial idea that stem cell transplants work in vivo via the replacement of endogenous cells lost or damaged owing to disease has been challenged by accumulating evidence of their therapeutic plasticity. This new concept co

Holoprosencephaly: signaling interactions between the brain and the face, the environment and the genes, and the phenotypic variability in animal models and humans.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is the most common developmental defect of the forebrain characterized by inadequate or absent midline division of the forebrain into cerebral hemispheres, with concomitant midline facial defects in the majority of cases. Understanding the pathogenesis of HPE requires knowledge of the relationship between the developing brain and the facial structures during embryogenesis. A number of signaling pathways control and coordinate the development of the brain and face, including Sonic hedgehog, Bone morphogenetic protein, Fibroblast growth factor, and Nodal signaling. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the effects of human-animal interactions on health and well-being of older adults: an umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Research shows that older adults can experience physical, emotional, and social benefits from owning or interacting with pets. Different variables, such as the type of animal, the context, and the duration of human-animal contact, can influence the effects of animal companionship on health. This umbrella review aims to assess how interactions between animals and older adults impact health and wellbeing. METHODS: After the definition and registration of the review protocol, five electronic medical databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library) were system

Memory formation and long-term retention in humans and animals: convergence towards a transformation account of hippocampal-neocortical interactions.

Historically, the hippocampus has been viewed as a temporary memory structure. Consistent with the central premise of standard consolidation theory (SCT), a memory is initially hippocampus-dependent but, over time, it undergoes a consolidation process and eventually becoming represented in a distributed cortical network independent of the hippocampus. In this paper, we review evidence that is incompatible with each of the following essential features of SCT that are derived from its central premise: (1) Hippocampal damage reliably produces temporally graded retrograde amnesia, (2) all declarat

Zoonotic Transmission of Soil-Transmitted Helminths in a Setting with Close Human-Animal Interaction: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study from Meghalaya, India.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) remain a major public health concern, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Although Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus) are commonly identified in humans, emerging evidence using molecular diagnostics capable of differentiating morphologically similar ova suggests zoonotic drivers of transmission, particularly in areas with close human-animal interaction. This pilot study investigated human and animal STH infections across nine villages of Meghalaya in the northeastern region of Ind

Can the treatment effects of human-animal interaction be maintained? A randomized controlled trial including follow-up in people with severe mental illness.

INTRODUCTION: There are persistent demands for well-designed randomized controlled trials (RCTs), including follow-up measurements, in studies on animal-assisted treatment (AAT). In addition, a possible dose-response relationship is under discussion. The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of a single-session AAT with sheep, including a booster exercise, over a follow-up period of four weeks. METHODS: In an RCT, a single-session AAT with sheep in a group setting, including an imaginative booster exercise conducted in the week following the AAT session, was compared to tre

Characterization of human-animal interactions among pet owners in Mexico from a One Health perspective: A cross-sectional study.

Determining the characteristics of coexistence between humans and their pets will enable the identification of risk behaviors associated with zoonotic transmission. This cross-sectional study in Mexico aimed to evaluate patterns of human-pet coexistence by examining the human-animal interaction and domestic hygiene sections of the online survey "National Survey on Coexistence with Pets in Mexico (NSCP)". The study adhered to STROBE guidelines. Associations were assessed using Pearson's χ2 test with p-values adjusted by Bonferroni and Holm's methods, and effect size was estimated with Cramér's

Modeling Neuroimmune Interactions in Human Subjects and Animal Models to Predict Subtype-Specific Multidrug Treatments for Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a persistent chronic neuroinflammatory illness exacerbated by external stressors and characterized by fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, cognitive, and neurological problems linked to underlying immunological dysfunction for which there is no known treatment. As the immune system and the brain communicate through several signaling pathways, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, it underlies many of the behavioral and physiological responses to stressors via blood-borne mediators, such as cytokines, chemokines, and hormones. Signaling by these molecules

Host-, Environment-, or Human-Related Effects Drive Interspecies Interactions in an Animal Tuberculosis Multi-Host Community Depending on the Host and Season.

In many Mediterranean ecosystems, animal tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, is maintained by multi-host communities in which cattle and different wildlife species establish interaction networks contributing to M. bovis transmission and persistence. Most studies have addressed wildlife-cattle disease-relevant interactions, focusing on reservoir hosts, while disregarding the potential contribution of the so-called accidental hosts and/or neglecting wildlife-wildlife interactions. In this work, we aimed to characterise interspecies interactions in an endemic TB risk area and identi

Seroprevalence and risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii infection in wild ungulates that cohabit in a natural park with human-animal interaction in the Mediterranean ecosystem.

The possibility of Toxoplasma gondii transmitted from game meat to humans is of public health concern. Here we determined seroprevalence and risk factors associated with T. gondii in large game ungulates that cohabit in Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park (SCSV-NP) (Southern Spain), a natural park with high human-animal interaction. Antibodies against T. gondii in 328 wild ungulates were assayed by the modified agglutination test (MAT ≥ 1:25). Antibodies were found in 39 (11.9%, 95% CI: 8.4-15.4) wild ungulates, with seroprevalence levels of 20.8% in wild boars (Sus scrofa)

Ocular tropism of coronavirus (CoVs): a comparison of the interaction between the animal-to-human transmitted coronaviruses (SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2, MERS-CoV, CoV-229E, NL63, OC43, HKU1) and the eye.

PURPOSE: Several studies have reported conflicting results on ocular manifestations and transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) whose causative virus, SARS-CoV-2, belongs to the coronavirus family, the seventh recognized as a human pathogen and the third causing a severe clinical syndrome. COVID-19 primarily affects the lungs, similar to the other human coronaviruses. Comparing the relation between the animal-to-human transmitted coronaviruses (SARS-CoV-1, SARS-Cov-2, MERS-CoV, CoV-229E, NL63, OC43, HKU1) and the eye may contribute to determining their actual eye-tissue tropism and
