Baleen whales foraging in the fjords of northern Chilean Patagonia are exposed to contaminant hotspots and high primary productivity. To evaluate ecotoxicological risk, we quantified methylmercury (MeHg) and eight trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Fe, Li, Mn, Se and Zn) across a whale-prey food web comprising blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus), humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), krill (Euphausia sp.), zooplankton (e.g. amphipods) and squat lobster (Grimothea gregaria). Stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) mixing models were used to reconstruct diet and contextualize contaminant pathways. MeHg c

RATIONALE: Stable isotope analysis (SIA) of free-swimming mysticetes using biopsies is often limited in sample size and uses only one sample per individual, failing to capture both intra-individual variability and the influence of demographic and physiological factors on isotope ratios.
METHODS: We applied SIA of δ13C and δ15N to humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) biopsies taken during the foraging season along the western Antarctic Peninsula to quantify intra-individual variation from repeatedly sampled individuals, as well as to determine the effect of biopsy collection site, sex, and

Skeletal tissues of 49 humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae that stranded between 2002 and 2011 along the Abrolhos Bank seashore and its adjacent waters in Brazil were studied. Twelve (24.5%) animals presented pathological changes in one or more bones. Degenerative changes and developmental malformations were most frequent (10.2% each), followed by inflammatory/infectious and traumatic lesions (8.2% each). Infectious diseases led to severe lesions of the caudal vertebrae of 2 whales. In one of these individuals, the lesions involved 6 caudal vertebrae, leading to ankylosis of 3 vertebrae. De

On low-latitude breeding grounds, humpback whales produce complex and highly stereotyped songs as well as a range of non-song sounds associated with breeding behaviors. While on their Southeast Alaskan foraging grounds, humpback whales produce a range of previously unclassified non-song vocalizations. This study investigates the vocal repertoire of Southeast Alaskan humpback whales from a sample of 299 non-song vocalizations collected over a 3-month period on foraging grounds in Frederick Sound, Southeast Alaska. Three classification systems were used, including aural spectrogram analysis, sta

Rorqual whales (Balaenopteridae) lunge at high speed with mouth open to nearly 90 degrees to engulf large volumes of prey-laden water. This feeding process is enabled by extremely large skulls and mandibles that increase mouth area, thereby facilitating the flux of water into the mouth. When these mandibles are lowered during lunge-feeding, they are exposed to high drag, and therefore, may be subject to significant bending forces. We hypothesized that these mandibles exhibited a mechanical design (shape and density distribution) that enables these bones to accommodate high loads during lunge-f

Marine mammals have been proposed to have a passively changing buoyancy that influences their swimming efforts depending on the depth, as a result of pulmonary alveolar compression/expansion as ambient pressure changes. Mysticetes have been described to have the same passive mechanism without considering their unique respiratory system, which may provide them with the ability to change their buoyancy actively to enhance vertical movements. Here, we present behavioral evidence supporting that adult mysticetes actively change buoyancy during shallow dives by analyzing diving data from multi-sens

Song sessions produced by humpback whales recorded off the coasts of Hawaii and Colombia show recurrent patterns of acoustic variation across consecutive songs. Analyses of intra-individual variations within continuous song sessions revealed that songs consistently cycled through stages of acoustic complexity. At time scales spanning tens of minutes, cyclical variations likely reflected the diving behavior of singers. Changes over shorter time frames suggest that singing humpback whales may also systematically modulate the acoustic complexity of individual sounds during song production, both b

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a cosmopolitan migratory, seasonal mysticete that frequents the Brazilian coast. Strands of specimens may occur during the migratory stay in the country. In 2021 and 2022, three live humpback whales stranded on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states in southern Brazil. After euthanasia, specimens were necropsied, and organs were thoroughly examined for lesions. Grossly, in all three cases, the liver exhibited multifocal, irregular, firm, white areas on the hepatic capsule, which extended into the parenchyma. On the cut surface, t

Few studies have been conducted on the visual capabilities of large cetaceans, such as the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), and understanding these capabilities provides insights into the natural history and anthropogenic vulnerabilities of these animals, which are otherwise difficult to study in situ. Here, we performed an anatomical and histological study of a subadult humpback whale eye to estimate visual acuity (i.e. spatial resolution of vision) for modelling the perception of relevant visual targets in an open ocean environment. Visual acuity was estimated at 3.95 cycles per degr

Exposure to underwater sound can cause permanent hearing loss and other physiological effects in marine animals. To reduce this risk, naval sonars are sometimes gradually increased in intensity at the start of transmission ('ramp-up'). Here, we conducted experiments in which tagged humpback whales were approached with a ship to test whether a sonar operation preceded by ramp-up reduced three risk indicators - maximum sound pressure level (SPLmax), cumulative sound exposure level (SELcum) and minimum source-whale range (Rmin) - compared with a sonar operation not preceded by ramp-up. Whales wer

Passive acoustic tracking provides an unobtrusive method of studying the movement of sound-producing animals in the marine environment where traditional tracking methods may be costly or infeasible. We used passive acoustic tracking to characterize the fine-scale movements of singing humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) on a northwest Atlantic feeding ground. Male humpback whales produce complex songs, a phenomenon that is well documented in tropical regions during the winter breeding season, but also occurs at higher latitudes during other times of year. Acoustic recordings were made thro

Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) have developed extensive protective barriers to exclude water or food from the respiratory tract, including valvular nostrils, an intranarial elongated larynx, and a sphincteric soft palate. A barrier breach can be lethal, as asphyxiation may occur from incursions of water (drowning) or food (choking). Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), however, exhibit a possibly unique and paradoxical behavior concerning respiratory protection: they release a "bubble cloud" (a cluster of tiny bubbles) underwater from the mouth. How they do this remains uncle

Quantifying energy expenditure of cetacean mother-calf pairs is essential for modelling population-level responses to environmental change and anthropogenic disturbance, especially for capital breeders where mothers face the compounding demands of fasting while lactating. Technological advances in biologging and unoccupied aerial system (UAS; drone) photogrammetry help overcome challenges in translating respirometry methods from animals under human care to the field, creating better energy-use estimates in large cetaceans. We quantified energy expenditure of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangl

Individually distinctive acoustic signals in animal vocal communication are taxonomically widespread, however, the investigation of these signal types in marine mammals has focused only on a few species. Humpback whale songs are a stereotyped, hierarchically structured vocal display performed by males, and hence thought to be sexually selected. Within a population, whales conform to a common version of the song despite the song constantly evolving. While humpback songs have been studied extensively at the population level, individual level variation has been rarely described, with inconclusive

At present, there are no direct measures of hearing for any baleen whale (Mysticeti). The most viable alternative to in vivo approaches to simulate the audiogram is through modeling outer, middle, and inner ear functions based on the anatomy and material properties of each component. This paper describes a finite element model of the middle ear for the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) to calculate the middle ear transfer function (METF) to determine acoustic energy transmission to the cochlea. The model was developed based on high resolution computed tomography imaging and direct anatom

For cetaceans, population structure is traditionally determined by molecular genetics or photographically identified individuals. Acoustic data, however, has provided information on movement and population structure with less effort and cost than traditional methods in an array of taxa. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) produce a continually evolving vocal sexual display, or song, that is similar among all males in a population. The rapid cultural transmission (the transfer of information or behavior between conspecifics through social learning) of different versions of this displa

Migratory whales are excellent sentinels of the health of marine ecosystems as they traverse whole ocean basins. Their metabolic balance, body condition, and reproductive suppression during marine heatwaves reflect their sensitivity to ocean conditions. A pilot study used corticosteroids as biomarkers of metabolic stress responses. Routine validations were conducted for cortisol, corticosterone, and aldosterone enzyme immunoassays, with differing success for each sex. High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) profiles for the same hormones were analyzed on extracted blubber for each sex. No i

PURPOSE: To date, little is still known on parasite infections affecting free-living large whale populations worldwide. Data presented should be considered as a baseline study for future monitoring surveys on endoparasites affecting whales, thereby enhancing investigations on impacts of zoonotic parasitoses not only on vulnerable or endangered baleen whale population health but also on public health.
METHODS: The presented study is a first report on gastrointestinal parasites infecting different free-living baleen whales inhabiting East Canadian waters using non-invasive methods. Individual f

BACKGROUND: Cetacean morbillivirus, herpesvirus, avian influenza virus (AIV) and Brucella spp. have been linked to numerous cetacean strandings in the Northeast (NE) Atlantic. Yet, their prevalence in free-living cetaceans remains insufficiently investigated, particularly in northern regions.
METHODS: Between 2016 and 2025, humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and, opportunistically, fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) and a long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), were sampled in two foraging grounds in northern Norway (Skjervøy and Andenes), in

Emerging and re-emerging pathogens have been increasingly investigated in cetaceans worldwide, particularly in odontocetes, whereas infectious diseases in mysticetes remain poorly understood. This study surveyed herpesvirus in 51 baleen whales stranded along the Brazilian coast, between 2008 and 2022: humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae, n = 46), Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera brydei, n = 3), a southern right whale (Eubalaena australis, n = 1), and a common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata, n = 1). A total of 159 tissue samples were analyzed using nested PCR assays targeting the herpe
