The hunger hormone ghrelin in cachexia.

Cachexia is characterized by reduced food intake, muscle and adipose tissue loss associated with increased energy expenditure. Cachexia is highly prevalent and represents one of the main causes of increased morbidity, mortality and reduced quality of life in chronic diseases. Ghrelin plays an important role in stimulating and controlling hunger and maintaining energy homeostasis acting on central nervous system and on peripheral tissues. Most of the studies have been conducted in experimental settings and in cancer and uremic patients, showing interesting results in the treatment of cachexia.

Hunger tolerance and Leishmania in sandflies.

The sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi transmits Leishmania major, the agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis, in desert and savannah regions of the Old World, where seasonal stress of dehydration and heat reduces the quantity of sugar in plant leaves. Without essential sugar, only a few flies that feed on leaves can survive for long enough to deposit eggs and transmit Leishmania. Accordingly, selection for hunger tolerance may also select for pathogen susceptibility in flies. Here we provide evidence of a link between these advantageous and costly properties by testing the susceptibility of flies selecte

Hunger and undernutrition in the United States.

In the United States, where food is plentiful nationwide, detection of populations at risk of hunger and malnutrition must rely more on social and economic indicators than on physiological indices, important as these are. Large federal programs expanded or created after the 1969 White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health were shown to be successful during the 1970s in reducing hunger and malnutrition as a massive social phenomenon, even though poverty conditions remained the same. Studies that apply our knowledge of nutritional and dietary requirements to construct a "market basket"

Gastrointestinal factors in hunger and satiety.

The evidence for the participation of signals from the gastrointestinal tract in hunger and satiety is reviewed. Various methods of subjecting only certain portions of the gastrointestinal tract to food are described including sham feeding, crossing of the intestines of two animals, and intragastric, intraduodenal and intravenous feeding. These methods have revealed that animals eat more when only the mouth is exposed to food, but consume less when food enters the stomach directly and still less when feeding themselves intravenously. The role of the stomach in satiety is discussed in relation

Time as a cue for human hunger.

Many people eat at around the same times each day. This may result in meal times becoming predictive of eating's potential to be rewarding at that time (i.e., hunger). Time as a predictor of food reward has received much attention in animals but less in humans, even though many people organise eating around breakfast, lunch and dinner - words implying particular times of day. In this narrative review we examine if and how habitual meal times might cause hunger in people. We start by addressing a basic premise, can time-of-day predict food availability outside of modern clock-driven societies?

Effect of Oxytocin on Hunger Discrimination.

Centrally and peripherally administered oxytocin (OT) decreases food intake and activation of the endogenous OT systems, which is associated with termination of feeding. Evidence gathered thus far points to OT as a facilitator of early satiation, a peptide that reduces the need for a meal that has already begun. It is not known, however, whether OT can diminish a feeling of hunger, thereby decreasing a perceived need to seek calories. Therefore, in the current project, we first confirmed that intraperitoneal (i.p.) OT at 0.3-1 mg/kg reduces food intake in deprived and non-deprived rats. We the

Consequences of hunger for individuals and societies.

Famine and the manifestations of acute hunger that result are an unnecessary disgrace to our global society and serious in their political, economic, and social consequences. Probably more damaging is the chronic undernutrition that afflicts such a large proportion of the populations of developing countries and the hidden hungers of iron deficiency, avitaminosis A, and iodine deficiency disorders that are enormously widespread. Famine in the modern world is almost invariably superimposed on chronic undernutrition that is not solved with emergency relief. Adaptation to this undernutrition requi

[Effect of hunger on the development of the child].

In a brief view there are described experimental results obtained from starving animals and teratogenous influences of the deficiency disease. By reference to a model group of 60 children there are depicted the complex influences of the deficiency disease and stresses of war. Two subgroups are described clinically, explaining the various pathogenesis. Children born under conditions of war and persecution or living under such conditions during childhood--41 persons. Children who after the war were born into families of previously persecuted people--19 persons. Neurotic conditions accompanied by

Neurological complications of prolonged hunger strike.

We investigated neurological findings in 41 prisoners (mean age: 28.6) who participated in a hunger strike between 2000 and 2002. All cases were evaluated using neuropsychological, neuroradiological, and electrophysiological methods. The total duration of fasting ranged from 130 to 324 days (mean 199 days). All cases had 200-600 mg/day thiamine orally for 60-294 days (mean 156) during the hunger strike, and had neurological findings consistent with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. All 41 patients exhibited altered consciousness which lasted from 3 to 31 days. All patients also presented gaze-evoke

[Assistance in hunger strikes: legal guidelines].

Hunger strikes raise ethical and legal issues, in addition to societal and medical ones. The World Medical Association adopted resolutions in 1975 (Declaration of Tokyo) and 1991 (Declaration of Malta) in which respect for the decision to refuse food was confirmed. A survey of the relevant international and national standards shows that in the Netherlands law and policy are more supportive of respect for food refusal (and against forced feeding) than would seem to be the case at the international level. However, respect for the decision of the hunger striker requires that it is well-considered

Measuring Hunger Severity in Rare MC4R Pathway Diseases: Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Most Hunger Item.

INTRODUCTION: Leptin receptor (LEPR) deficiency, pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) deficiency, Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), and acquired hypothalamic obesity (HO) are diseases of the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) pathway that often lead to insatiable hunger and severe obesity. As targeted treatments, such as setmelanotide, emerge for these diseases, it is critical to understand treatment benefit from patients' perspectives. This study describes the development and psychometric evaluation of the Most Hunger item, a patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure assessing hunger in patients with MC4R pathway

Gender differences in reports of interoceptive hunger.

Gender differences in interoception, manifesting as attention to bodily events (typically greater in women) and accuracy at detecting bodily events (typically greater in men) are broadly established and suggest the likely existence of similar gender differences for interoceptive hunger. Here, we report a two-stage cross-sectional study to test for gender differences in self-report interoceptive hunger. In stage one we examined extant data (96 men vs. 355 women) and in stage 2 we collected data to test the findings from stage one (122 men vs. 315 women). Overall, compared to men, women consiste

The psychological basis of hunger and its dysfunctions.

This article describes a new and emerging psychological perspective on hunger, together with the implications of that perspective, which is based upon learning and memory. Hunger is a psychological state characterized by a desire to eat. Historically, conceptions of hunger have largely been expressed in terms of physiology (eg, biological process X causes hunger). However, physiology neither offers a psychological account of hunger nor explains why memory impairment can eliminate hunger. Two forms of hunger are identified - specific and general. Specific hunger is for particular palatable food

Acute Cardiomyopathy in a Prisoner on a Hunger Strike.

Chronic starvation and its associated metabolic derangements are known to have dangerous cardiovascular implications in the long term, but less is known about the cardiovascular consequences of acute starvation, such as in the context of a hunger strike. This case describes a patient who presented with signs and symptoms of acute coronary syndrome which began two weeks into a hunger strike and was ultimately found to have stress cardiomyopathy with complete resolution on subsequent imaging.

On the Force-Feeding of Prisoners on Hunger Strike.

Roughly 80,000 U.S. prisoners are held in solitary confinement at any given time. A significant body of research shows that solitary confinement has severe, long-term effects, and the United Nations has condemned the practice of solitary confinement as torture. For years, prisoners have been organizing hunger strikes in order to protest solitary confinement. But such action is not without consequences, and some inmates have suffered serious injury or death. The question I raise in this paper is whether we ought to force-feed hunger striking prisoners when serious harm is imminent. Both the Wor
