Placental insufficiency results in fetal loss, low birth weight, stillbirth, preweaning mortality and poor growth. Placental development beg … osed of glycosaminoglycans, the most abundant being hyaluronan and heparan sulfate. Changes in both hyaluronoglucosaminidase and heparanase during placental development suggest that these enzymes play a role in placental development. In addition to structural modifications, various nutrient specific transport mechanisms exist. These mechanisms are likely to be as importan …

Spider venoms are primarily composed of small neurotoxic peptides. However, recent studies suggested a hitherto overlooked diversity of spider venom enzymes, although their functional space still remains largely unexplored. We tested 10 spider venoms for enzymatic activities covering six enzyme classes and found that all tested enzymatic activities can be detected in at least some of the venoms and that hyaluronidases exhibit particularly high enzymatic activities. With this, our study provides functional evidence for the proposed biological significance of enzymes in spider venoms, but more d

Hyaluronan (HA) is a large polysaccharide that is broadly distributed and highly abundant in the soft connective tissues and embryos of vertebrates. The constitutive turnover of HA is very high, estimated at 5 g per day in an average (70 kg) adult human, but HA turnover must also be tightly regulated in some processes. Six genes encoding homologues to bee venom hyaluronidase (HYAL1, HYAL2, HYAL3, HYAL4, HYAL6P/HYALP1, SPAM1/PH20), as well as genes encoding two unrelated G8-domain-containing proteins demonstrated to be involved in HA degradation (CEMIP/KIAA1199, CEMIP2/TMEM2), have been identif

After a surgery of the theoretical background of iontophoretic technic and the physico-chemical properties of hyaluronidases, a clinical application is presented, based on over 500 hemophilic patients treated percutaneously, in cases both of hemarthrosis and hematomas. The results are presented and discussed. The conclusion is that hyaluronidase iontophoresis is useful and should be performed together with the other measures for the prevention and the treatment of the damages produced by hemorrhages in hemophilic patients.
