Hydrangeic acid from the processed leaves of Hydrangea macrophylla var. thunbergii as a new type of anti-diabetic compound.

Hydrangeic acid (3-100 microM), a stilbene constituent of the processed leaves of Hydrangea macrophylla var. thunbergii (Hydrangeae Dulcis Folium), promoted adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 cells. Hydrangeic acid significantly increased the amount of adiponectin released into the medium, the uptake of 2-deoxyglucose into the cells, and the translocation of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4). Hydrangeic acid also increased mRNA levels of adiponectin, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma2 (PPARgamma2), GLUT4, and fatty acid-binding protein (aP2) while it decreased the expression of tumor necrosis f

Durable Superhydrophobic Composite Coating Based on Hydrangea-like SiO2 Nanoparticles with Excellent Performance in Anticorrosion, Drag Reduction, and Antifouling.

Superhydrophobic coatings possess distinct wettability characteristics and hold significant potential in metal corrosion protection and underwater drag reduction. However, their practical application is often hindered by poor durability arising from the fragility of their micro/nanostructured surface roughness. In this study, a durable superhydrophobic coating featuring a hierarchical, hydrangea-like micro/nanostructure was successfully fabricated on an aluminum alloy substrate via a simple one-step cold-spraying technique. The coating consisted of hydrangea-shaped SiO2 nanoparticles modified

Hydrangea-like biomimetic MgO-modified coconut shell biochar for remediation of multi-media heavy metal pollution: Morphological innovation and underlying mechanisms.

Metal oxide-modified biochar have emerged as prominent adsorbents for tackling heavy metal contamination. However, their typical granular structure is prone to accumulate on biochar and clog the pores of biochar. This study developed a hydrangea-like MgO-modified biochar (X-MBC) to overcome this limitation and investigated its effectiveness and mechanisms in remediating heavy metal pollution across the "water-soil-plant" multi-media system. The findings revealed that 2-MBC exhibited maximum adsorption capacities of 978.58 mg/g for Cd2 + and 1605.78 mg/g for Pb²⁺ in aqueous solution. In the soi

Host plant preference and suitability of Systena frontalis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in container ornamental nursery systems.

Systena frontalis (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is an economically important pest of container-grown ornamental plants in the eastern United States. Adults cause characteristic shot-hole feeding injury that reduces plant marketability. Although growers report widespread damage across multiple ornamentals, information on adult host plant preference remains inconsistent and largely anecdotal. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine adult feeding preference and host suitability of S. frontalis on 12 major ornamental plant species grown in greenhouses using no-choice and multi-choice

Residual activity of insecticides against adult Systena frontalis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) under semi-field conditions.

Systena frontalis (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a serious insect pest in nursery production. Insecticides are an important control tactic for S. frontalis adults to reduce economic losses associated with its injury. Because densities and activity of S. frontalis adults are influenced by many biotic (e.g., adult emergence timing) and abiotic (e.g., fluctuating temperatures) factors in the nurseries, it is challenging to reliably determine the efficacy and residual activity of insecticides under field conditions. Thus, the objective was to determine the residual activity of common a

Chemical synthesis of febrifugine and analogues.

The quinazolinone-containing 2,3-disubstituted piperidines febrifugine and isofebrifugine have been the subject of significant research efforts since their occurrence in Dichroa febrifuga and their anti-malarial actions were first described in the late 1940s. Subsequently they have also been shown to be present in other plants belonging to the hydrangea family and various analogues of febrifugine have been prepared in attempts to tune biological properties. The most notable analogue is termed halofuginone and a substantial body of work now demonstrates that this compound possesses potent human

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Hierarchical SnO2 Nanostructures for Improved Formaldehyde Gas Sensing.

The indoor environment of buildings affects people's daily life. Indoor harmful gases include volatile organic gas and greenhouse gas. Therefore, the detection of harmful gas by gas sensors is a key method for developing green buildings. The reasonable design of SnO2-sensing materials with excellent structures is an ideal choice for gas sensors. In this study, three types of hierarchical SnO2 microspheres assembled with one-dimensional nanorods, including urchin-like microspheres (SN-1), flower-like microspheres (SN-2), and hydrangea-like microspheres (SN-3), are prepared by a simple hydrother

Efficient Extraction of Phenols from Coal Tar and Preparation of Phenolic Resin-Based Porous Carbon for Advanced Supercapacitor Application.

Developing simple and efficient extraction methods for phenolic substances from coal tar, which facilitate their direct transformation into high-performance electrode materials, holds considerable practical significance. In this study, amide-zinc chloride deep eutectic solvents are employed for efficient phenol extraction. The optimal phenol extraction process is subsequently investigated, and it is found that the robust hydrogen bonding interactions between solvents and phenols significantly enhance extraction efficiency. Notably, without the need for back-extraction, formaldehyde and tetraet
