Photoinduced toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to Daphnia magna: ultraviolet-mediated effects and the toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon photoproducts.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants known for their photoinduced toxicity. This toxicity may occur through two mechanisms: Photosensitization, and photomodification. Photosensitization generally leads to the production of singlet oxygen, a reactive oxygen species that is highly damaging to biological molecules. Photomodification of PAHs, usually via oxidation, results in the formation of new compounds and can occur under environmentally relevant levels of actinic radiation. The toxicities of 16 intact PAHs to Daphnia magna were assessed under two u

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and perinatal outcomes: a scoping review.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generated during the incomplete combustion of carbon-based materials and have been identified as mutagenic, teratogenic, carcinogenic, and immunotoxic agents. Maternal exposure to PAHs via inhalation, occupational exposures, dietary intake, or dermal absorption has been linked to an elevated risk of infertility, spontaneous abortion and preterm birth. PAHs can cross the placenta, potentially leading to adverse fetal outcomes including growth restriction and congenital anomalies. Additionally, both prenatal and postnatal exposure to PAHs have been ass

Prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and growth parameters.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It has long been known that airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can negatively affect pregnancy and birth outcomes, such as birth weight, fetal development, and placental growth factors. However, similar studies yield divergent results. Our goal was to estimate the amount of monohydroxylated PAH (OH-PAH) metabolites in the urine of pregnant women/mothers and their newborns in relation to birth outcomes, such as placenta weight, Apgar 5', and the growth parameters of children up to the age of two. METHODS: Two cohorts of children born in 2013 and 2014 du

Exposure of firefighters to particulates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Firefighting continues to be among the most hazardous yet least studied occupations in terms of exposures and their relationship to occupational disease. Exposures are complex, involving mixtures of particles and chemicals such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Adverse health effects associated with these agents include elevated incidences of coronary heart disease and several cancers. PAHs have been detected at fire scenes, and in the firehouse rest area and kitchen, routinely adjoining the truck bay, and where firefighters spend a major part of each shift. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and digestive tract cancers: a perspective.

Cancers of the colon are most common in the Western world. In majority of these cases, there is no familial history and sporadic gene damage seems to play an important role in the development of tumors in the colon. Studies have shown that environmental factors, especially diet, play an important role in susceptibility to gastrointestinal (GI) tract cancers. Consequently, environmental chemicals that contaminate food or diet during preparation become important in the development of GI cancers. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one such family of ubiquitous environmental toxicants. Th

Secondary organic aerosol from photooxidation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from the photooxidation of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, naphthalene, 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene, acenaphthylene, and acenaphthene) was investigated in a 9-m(3) chamber in the presence of nitrogen oxides and the absence of seed aerosols. Aerosol size distributions and PAH decay were monitored by a scanning mobility particle sizer and a gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector. Over a wide range of conditions, the aerosol yields for the investigated PAHs were observed to be in the range of 2-22%. The observed evolution of aeroso

Factors associated with human exposures to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The number and quantities of PAH emitted and accumulated within various environmental media require the development and application of new methods for determining the major routes of exposure to individual and selected compounds. From research that has been conducted on airborne BaP and other selected PAH it appears that they can accumulate indoors as well as outdoors. Smoking seems to be a major contributor for direct and passive inhalation, but the role of cooking and wood burning related to indoor emissions needs to be investigated further. The available data indicate that many PAH will be

Indirect- and direct-acting mutagenicity of diesel, coal and wood burning-derived particulates and contribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Particulates exhausted from two types of diesel engines (DEPs), burning-derived particulates from three types of coal (CBPs) and burning-derived particulates from three types of wood (WBPs) were separated into four fractions by silica-gel column chromatography using n-hexane, n-hexane-dichloromethane (3:1, v/v), dichloromethane and methanol, as the corresponding eluents. The indirect-acting mutagenicity of each fraction was assayed by the Ames test using the Salmonella typhimurium TA100 strain with S9 mix and the direct-acting mutagenicity was assayed using the S. typhimurium TA98 strain witho

[Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the atmosphere in the town of Zenica].

The content of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in extracts of particulate matter collected in the city of Zenica in December 1987 was analysed. In addition to the presence of proven carcinogens like benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene, chryzene and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, the contents of naphthalene, fluorene, fenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene and pyrene were also determined. Those substances were rightly assumed to be precursors of genotoxic products in reactions with atmospheric nitrogen oxides. The determined average concentration of benzo(a)pyrene was higher than those found in ot

Fractionation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon residues in soils.

Understanding the forms and availabilities of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) would have considerable benefits for their risk assessment, and is of crucial importance for food security and remediation strategies in contaminated sites. In this work, the forms of six PAHs (fluorene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, and benzo[a]pyrene) in soils were separated into three fractions including a desorbing fraction, a non-desorbing fraction, and a bound residual fraction using a sequential extraction mass balance approach. The desorbing and non-desorbing fractions were ex

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exposure associated with increased risk of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is considered to be multifactorial, with both genetic and environmental factors contributing to its development. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread in the environment, originating from sources such as cigarette smoke, exhaust emissions, grilled foods, smoked foods and urban air. Researchs have established a link between PAHs exposure and autoimmune disorders; however, specific effects of PAHs on psoriasis remain underexplored. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between PAHs exposure and susceptibility to psoriasis. We analysed eight monohydroxy PAHs (1-Hy

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Exposure Assessment in a Refractory Brick Production.

In a refractory brick manufacturing company a qualitative and quantitative determination of the sources of occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was obtained in order to validate targeted hygiene measurements. The study included the assessment of PAHs contamination of work surfaces by wipe-sampling, cutaneous exposure by hand washing, contamination of personal protective equipments (gloves) by extraction in solvent, and airborne PAHs concentration in atmospheric samples. Biomonitoring was also carried out by measurement of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHPU) in three gr

Electronically excited states of protonated aromatic hydrocarbons: phenanthrene and pyrene.

The first and second electronic excited states (S1 and S2) of protonated phenanthrene and protonated pyrene, having the ππ* nature, are strongly red-shifted compared to corresponding electronic transitions in neutral homologues. The CC2 calculations identify an out-of-plane deformation as the most important photochemical reaction coordinate in protonated phenanthrene as well as protonated benzene. It was shown that the excited S1 states of protonated phenanthrene and protonated benzene are unstable via a torsional motion, which provides a fast access to a S1-S0 conical intersection. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from wood pyrolyis in charcoal production furnaces.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were measured in smoke samples from wood carbonization during charcoal production, in both particulate matter (PM) and gaseous phases. Samples were acquired using a medium-volume air sampler at 1.5 m distance from the furnace. Particle-bound PAH were collected on Fluoropore polytetrafluoroethylene filters and gas-phase PAH were collected into sorbent tubes with XAD-2 resin. PAH were extracted with dichloromethane-methanol and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed total emission from the furnace of 26 microg/m3 for the 16

Smoking increases carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in human lung tissue.

Tobacco smoke is a major source of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The concentration of PAHs in lung tissue would reflect an individual's dose, and its variation could perhaps reflect cancer risk. Eleven PAHs were measured in 70 lung tissue samples from cancer-free autopsy donors by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. There were 37 smokers and 33 nonsmokers as estimated by serum cotinine concentration. The sum of PAH concentrations was higher in smokers (P = 0.01), and there was a dose-response relationship for greater smoking (P < 0.01). Smoking increased the conc

Revival of Hückel Aromatic (Poly)benzenoid Subunits in Triplet State Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Silicon Substitution.

By employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations we show that mono- and disilicon substitution in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, having two to four benzene units, quenches their triplet state antiaromaticity by creating Hückel aromatic (poly)benzenoid subunit(s) and weakly antiaromatic, or almost nonaromatic silacycle. Therefore, such systems are predicted to be globally aromatic in both the ground state and the first excited triplet state. Putting the silicon atom(s) into various positions of a hydrocarbon provides an opportunity to tune the singlet-triplet energy gaps. They depen

Effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on the gut-testis axis.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large group of organic compounds which are comprised of two or more fused benzene rings. As a typical environmental pollutant, PAHs are widely distributed in water, soil, atmosphere and food. Despite extensive researches on the mechanisms of health damage caused by PAHs, especially their carcinogenic and mutagenic toxicity, there is still a lack of comprehensive summarization and synthesis regarding the mechanisms of PAHs on the gut-testis axis, which represents an intricate interplay between the gastrointestinal and reproductive systems. Thus, thi
