Simultaneously Toughening and Stiffening Elastomers with Octuple Hydrogen Bonding.

Current synthetic elastomers suffer from the well-known trade-off between toughness and stiffness. By a combination of multiscale experiments and atomistic simulations, a transparent unfilled elastomer with simultaneously enhanced toughness and stiffness is demonstrated. The designed elastomer comprises homogeneous networks with ultrastrong, reversible, and sacrificial octuple hydrogen bonding (HB), which evenly distribute the stress to each polymer chain during loading, thus enhancing stretchability and delaying fracture. Strong HBs and corresponding nanodomains enhance the stiffness by restr

Hydrogen bonding of nitroxide spin labels in membrane proteins.

On the basis of experiments at 275 GHz, we reconsider the dependence of the continuous-wave EPR spectra of nitroxide spin-labeled protein sites in sensory- and bacteriorhodopsin on the micro-environment. The high magnetic field provides the resolution necessary to disentangle the effects of hydrogen bonding and polarity. In the gxx region of the 275 GHz EPR spectrum, bands are resolved that derive from spin-label populations carrying no, one or two hydrogen bonds. The gxx value of each population varies hardly from site to site, significantly less than deduced previously from studies at lower

Cooperative hydrogen bonding in trimers involving HCN and HBO.

A computational study of the cooperative effect of hydrogen bonding in linear trimers comprised of HCN and HBO molecules was undertaken at the MP2/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory. It was found that the third molecule leads to enhancement of the binding relative to that of the dimer species comprising these monomers. HBO is a better proton acceptor and a weaker proton donor than HCN.

Hydrogen bonding between FNO and H2O: structure and energetics.

Nitrosyl fluoride, of some interest in atmospheric chemistry, has three atoms which could potentially serve as proton acceptors in the formation of hydrogen bonds. The optimized structure of FNO and H(2)O was determined at the MP4/6-31G** level of calculation. In the resulting structure, the hydrogen bonds at the fluorine with an energy of 5.15 kcal/mol, contrary to the prediction that less electronegative atoms make better proton acceptors/electron donors but consistent with results of proton affinity studies and with the contribution of a resonance structure with no bond between the N and F

FTIR studies of intermolecular hydrogen bonding in halogenated ethanols.

The effect of halogen substitution on intermolecular hydrogen-bonding in ethanol is studied. Specifically, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of ethanol, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE), and 2,2,2-trichloroethanol dissolved in carbon tetrachloride are reported as a function of temperature and concentration. The spectral intensities corresponding to monomer, dimer, and multimer formation are used to determine the effect of halogen substitution on intermolecular hydrogen-bonding. The enthalpy for dimerization was found to evolve from -4.2+/-0.3 kcal/mol in ethanol to -6.8+/-1.0 kcal/mol in T

Quantum hydrogen-bond symmetrization in the superconducting hydrogen sulfide system.

The quantum nature of the proton can crucially affect the structural and physical properties of hydrogen compounds. For example, in the high-pressure phases of H2O, quantum proton fluctuations lead to symmetrization of the hydrogen bond and reduce the boundary between asymmetric and symmetric structures in the phase diagram by 30 gigapascals (ref. 3). Here we show that an analogous quantum symmetrization occurs in the recently discovered sulfur hydride superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature Tc of 203 kelvin at 155 gigapascals--the highest Tc reported for any superconducto

Molecular reporters for mammalian sugars via hydrogen bonding auxiliaries.

Glycans are essential transmitters of biological information. However, their complex and dynamic structures remain difficult to characterize, posing a major barrier to fully understanding their biological functions. Here, we demonstrate that hydrogen bonding auxiliaries positioned adjacent to the boron site of turn-on fluorogenic phenylboronic acid reporters serve as key modulators of sensitivity to mammalian sugars, providing a new design principle analogous to the hydrogen bonding networks found in lectin binding pockets. We show that these auxiliaries tune sensitivity both globally and for

Shape-Shifting Tetralactam Macrocycles: Protonation-Activated Convergent Hydrogen Bonding.

Integrating high binding affinity with dynamic, stimuli-responsive control represents a pivotal objective in synthetic receptor design, with far-reaching implications for sensing, separation, and molecular machinery. We report a class of shape-shifting tetralactam macrocycles featuring embedded 2,4-pyridinedicarboxamide units as switching elements. In their neutral state, these macrocycles adopt divergent hydrogen-bonding conformations that exhibit low substrate affinity. Upon protonation, a reversible conformational reorganization occurs, reorienting four amide N-H groups toward the cavity to

Computational design of superstable proteins through maximized hydrogen bonding.

Hydrogen bonds are fundamental chemical interactions that stabilize protein structures, particularly in β sheets, enabling resistance to mechanical stress and environmental extremes. Here, inspired by natural mechanostable proteins with shearing hydrogen bonds, such as titin and silk fibroin, we de novo designed superstable proteins by maximizing hydrogen-bond networks within force-bearing β strands. Using a computational framework combining artificial intelligence-guided structure and sequence design with all-atom molecular dynamics MD simulations, we systematically expanded protein architect

Chloride capture using a C-H hydrogen-bonding cage.

Tight binding and high selectivity are hallmarks of biomolecular recognition. Achieving these behaviors with synthetic receptors has usually been associated with OH and NH hydrogen bonding. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, we designed a chloride-selective receptor in the form of a cryptand-like cage using only CH hydrogen bonding. Crystallography showed chloride stabilized by six short 2.7-angstrom hydrogen bonds originating from the cage's six 1,2,3-triazoles. Attomolar affinity (1017 M-1) was determined using liquid-liquid extractions of chloride from water into nonpolar dichloromethane

Hydrogen bonding interactions between indole and benzenoid-pi-bases.

The NH-pi interactions of indole with benzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, toluene, m-xylene, and mesitilene, in carbon tetrachloride solutions, have been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The experiments, carried out on the NH stretching band of indole, prove the formation of 1:1 complexes in which the NH bond of indole is engaged. The NH frequency shifts are independent of the number of rings in the base, but they progressively increase as the electron density is enhanced by methylation. The association constants increase with the increase of both, the number of rings and th

Hydrogen bond enhanced coordination of hydrogen peroxide to indium trichloride.

Coordination of hydrogen peroxide by a metal center is the first step in the enzymatic cycle of peroxidases and catalases. Although this process occurs readily in living cells, synthesizing molecular complexes with the H2O2 ligand remains challenging due to hydrogen peroxide's weaker coordinating ability compared to other polar solvents. To date, structural information on coordination compounds with hydrogen peroxide as a ligand is represented by the crystal structures of a zinc complex and two tin complexes. This work demonstrates that hydrogen peroxide complexes can be prepared from coordina

Chemical Bonds Containing Hydrogen: Choices for Hydrogen Carriers and Catalysts.

Compounds containing B─H, C─H, N─H, or O─H bonds with high hydrogen content have been extensively studied as potential hydrogen carriers. Their hydrogen storage performance is largely determined by the nature of these bonds, decomposition pathways, and the properties of the dehydrogenation products. Among these compounds, methanol, cyclohexane, and ammonia stand out due to their low costs and established infrastructure, making them promising hydrogen carriers for large-scale storage and transport. They offer viable pathways for decarbonizing society by enabling hydrogen to serve as a clean ene

A three-component hydrogen bonded framework.

A porous three-component hydrogen bonded framework, 1⋅biphen⋅TP, was prepared from a tetra-amidinium component (14+) and two different dianions, benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (terephthalate, TP2-) and biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate (biphen2-). Interestingly, when the framework was prepared in ethanol/water, 1⋅biphen⋅TP forms even when an excess of either dicarboxylate is present. However, when only water is used as solvent, only two-component frameworks are formed.

Hydrogen-Bonded Complex of the Parent Phosphinidene.

The diatomic molecule PH is very reactive, and it serves as the parent compound for phosphinidenes featuring a monovalent phosphorus atom. Herein, we report the characterization and reactivity of a rare hydrogen-bonded complex of PH. Specifically, the molecular complex between PH and HCl has been generated by photolysis of chlorophosphine (H2PCl) at 254 nm in a solid Ar-matrix at 10 K. The IR spectrum of the complex HP⋅⋅⋅HCl and quantum chemical calculations at the UCCSD(T)-F12a/haTZ level consistently prove that the phosphorus atom acts as a hydrogen bond acceptor with a binding energy (D0) o

Effects of intramolecular hydrogen bonds on lipophilicity.

Intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IMHBs) affect the lipophilicity and physicochemical properties of small organic molecules and drug candidates. Considering IMHBs in drug design is an important strategy for improving the lipophilicity and physicochemical properties of drug candidates. However, how IMHBs affect the lipophilicity and partition coefficients are not well understood. Based on the relationship between the effect of IMHBs on the experimental partition coefficients and the H-bonding capabilities of H-bond forming atoms, we explore how IMHBs affect water/n-octanol partition coefficients,

Hydrogen-Bonded Duplexes with Lengthened Linkers.

Connecting basic hydrogen-bonding units with lengthened flexible or rigid linkers generates oligoamide strands that carry new H-bonding sequences and association specificity, leading to H-bonded homo- and heteroduplexes with association constants in the 104 M-1 range in chloroform. Computational and experimental studies indicate that in duplexes with rigid aromatic linkers the oligoamide strands adopt bent conformations that allow the formation of interstrand H-bonds and accommodate the introduced aromatic liners, offering a new series of association units.

An enantiomerically pure hydrogen-bonded assembly.

Chiral molecules have asymmetric arrangements of atoms, forming structures that are non-superposable mirror images of each other. Specific mirror images ('enantiomers') may be obtained either from enantiomerically pure precursor compounds, through enantioselective synthesis, or by resolution of so-called racemic mixtures of opposite enantiomers, provided that racemization (the spontaneous interconversion of enantiomers) is sufficiently slow. Non-covalent assemblies can similarly adopt chiral supramolecular structures, and if they are held together by relatively strong interactions, such as met

Sensing the acidity of hydrogen bond networks.

The reactivity of hydrogen bond networks (HBNs) is critical to many chemical and biological scenarios. When the HBNs are under constraint, hydrogen bond strength and acidity are affected significantly. HBNs exhibit cooperativity, where connections formed in one part of the HBN influence its behavior elsewhere. We combined experimental and computational approaches to examine the growth of the HBNs of water and hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), constrained by an aprotic cosolvent. We independently employed vibrational frequency shift of an acetonitrile probe, 1H NMR chemical shift of an aniline prob

Hydrogen Bonds: Simple after All?

Hydrogen bonds play integral roles in biological structure, function, and conformational dynamics and are fundamental to life as it has evolved on Earth. However, our understanding of these fundamental and ubiquitous interactions has seemed fractured and incomplete, and it has been difficult to extract generalities and principles about hydrogen bonds despite thousands of papers published on this topic, perhaps in part because of the expanse of this subject and the density of studies. Fortunately, recent hydrogen bond proposals, discussions, and debates have stimulated new tests and models and
