Going with the flow: legionellosis risk in Toronto, Canada is strongly associated with local watershed hydrology.

Legionella species are increasingly recognized as a cause of both healthcare- and community-acquired pneumonia (so-called "Legionnaire's disease"). These pathogens are ubiquitous in the environment, but environmental factors in the occurrence of sporadic legionellosis remain poorly understood. We analyzed all legionellosis cases identified in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario from 1978 to 2006, and evaluated seasonal and environmental patterns in legionellosis case occurrence by using both negative binomial models and case-crossover analysis. A total of 837 cases were reported during the stu

[A wetland identification method based on hydrological response unit connectivity.].

Wetland identification is a fundamental prerequisite for the conservation, ecological restoration, and basin-scale water resources management of wetlands. Conventional remote-sensing-based wetland identification mainly relies on surface spectral information and is susceptible to intra-class spectral variability, inter-class spectral similarity, ambiguous boundaries, and seasonal hydrological fluctuations. It is therefore difficult to reveal the hydrological processes underlying wetland formation and maintenance. To address these limitations, we proposed a refined wetland identification method

Extreme hydrological events shape temporal dynamics of schistosomiasis in the Amazon.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease whose transmission is strongly influenced by environmental and hydrological conditions. In tropical regions, increasing climate variability and the intensification of extreme events raise important questions regarding how long-term climatic conditions and hydrological disturbances shape disease dynamics. This study investigated the temporal association between schistosomiasis incidence, mean annual temperature, accumulated annual precipitation, and flooding occurrence over a 25-year time series (2000-2024) in an Amazonian municipality. Annual con

Diatom responses to sewage inputs and hydrological alteration in Mediterranean streams.

We analyzed the conjoint effects of sewage inputs and hydrological alteration on the occurrence of teratological forms and on the assemblage composition of stream benthic diatoms. The study was performed in 11 Mediterranean streams which received treated or untreated urban sewage (Impact sites, I), whose composition and morphological anomalies were compared to upstream unaffected (Control, C) sites. The impact sites had high concentrations of ammonium, phosphorus, and pharmaceutical compounds (antibiotics, analgesics, and anti-inflammatories), particularly in those receiving untreated sewage.

Hydrologic conditions describe West Nile virus risk in Colorado.

We examine the relationship between hydrologic variability and the incidence of human disease associated with West Nile virus (WNV; family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus) infection (hereafter termed "human WN cases") in Colorado from 2002 to 2007. We find that local hydrologic conditions, as simulated by the Mosaic hydrology model, are associated with differences in human WN cases. In Colorado's eastern plains, wetter spring conditions and drier summer conditions predict human WN cases. In Colorado's western mountains, drier spring and summer conditions weakly predict human WN cases. These fin

Eco-hydrology as a driver for tidal restoration: Observations from a Ramsar wetland in eastern Australia.

Land reclamation projects and the installation of drainage infrastructure has impacted coastal wetlands worldwide. By altering water levels and inundation extent, these activities have changed the viable ecosystems onsite and resulted in the proliferation of freshwater species. As more than 50% of tidal wetlands have been degraded globally over the last 100 years, the importance of this issue is increasingly being recognised and tidal wetland restoration projects are underway worldwide. However, there are currently limited sites where large-scale reintroduction of tidal flushing has been imple

Influence of Plio-Pleistocene basin hydrology on the Turkana hominin enamel carbonate δ(18)O values.

Stable oxygen isotopes of hominin enamel carbonate (δ(18)OEC) provide a window into aspects of past drinking behavior and diet, body size, breastfeeding and weaning, mobility, and paleoclimate. It is tempting to compare all hominins across time and space in order to gauge species-level adaptations to changing environments and niche separation between those living sympatrically. Basinal, sub-basinal, and micro-environmental differences, however, may exert an influence on variation in enamel carbonate isotopic values that must be reconciled before hominin species across Africa can be meaningfull

Human exposure to trace elements in central Cambodia: Influence of seasonal hydrology and food-chain bioaccumulation behaviour.

Exposure to mercury and other trace elements remains an important public health concern, worldwide. The present study involved a comprehensive field study to determine concentrations of fourteen trace elements (Al, As, Cr, Co, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, V and Zn) in surface water and different fish species from Tonlé Sap Lake in central Cambodia, during both the dry and wet seasons. Total arsenic (tAs) and Mn in surface water during the dry season exceeded WHO drinking water guidelines. Total mercury (tHg) concentrations (µg/g wet wt.) in fish during the wet season (GM = 0.055; CI95 = 0.0

Modelling the hydrological response of blue-green roofs: ECO-PRO model.

Green roofs are climate-adaptive measures able to address many urban challenges like heat islands, water scarcity, floodings, pollution and biodiversity loss. Recently, the "blue-green roof" variant has gained attention for its enhanced functionality, since, incorporating a high-capacity storage layer, they can retain significant amount of rainwater. This last can be gradually released, reducing stress on urban drainage during heavy storms, sustain passive irrigation and provide greywater for reuse. Modelling green infrastructures is essential for optimizing design and efficacy, and, in this c

Integrating fluvial geomorphology into river hydrological connectivity: Implications for carbon emissions.

Rivers serve as critical components of the carbon cycle and hotspots for carbon emissions, while changes in hydrological connectivity can significantly modulate carbon emission processes. Through literature analysis, we elaborate the concept of hydrological connectivity, and proposes a refined definition that incorporates fluvial geomorphology. This redefined concept characterizes the integrated transport of materials, energy, and biota within river systems, encompassing both structural and functional connectivity dimensions, along with their temporal-spatial dynamics and relative stability. Subsurface hydrological connectivity controls nitrate export flux in a hilly catchment.

Subsurface runoff represents the main pathway of nitrate transport in hilly catchments. The magnitude of nitrate export from a source area is closely related to subsurface hydrological connectivity, which refers to the linkage of separate regions of a catchment via subsurface runoff. However, understanding of how subsurface hydrological connectivity regulates catchment nitrate export remains insufficient. This study conducted high-frequency monitoring of shallow groundwater in a hilly catchment over 17 months. Subsurface hydrological connectivity of the catchment over 38 rainfall events was an

Biogeochemical and hydrological drivers of the dynamics of Vibrio species in two Patagonian estuaries.

The ecology of the most relevant Vibrio species for human health and their relation to water quality and biogeochemistry were studied in two estuaries in Argentinian Patagonia. Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were reported in >29% of cases at the Río Colorado and Río Negro estuaries. Neither the pandemic serogroups of Vibrio cholerae O1, Vibrio cholerae O139 nor the cholera toxin gene were detected in this study. However, several strains of V. cholerae (not O1 or O139) are able to cause human disease or acquire pathogenic genes by horizontal transfer. Vibrio vulnificus was detected

Seasonal hydrology and its impact on buffalo artificial insemination strategies in the amazon region of northern Brazil.

This study aimed to verify how seasonal hydrology affects artificial insemination strategies in northern Brazil to promote better livestock management and ecosystem sustainability. A total of 1780 inseminations were analyzed, including 1590 fixed-time artificial inseminations (FTAI) and 190 conventional artificial inseminations (CAI) (AI in natural estrus without using hormones) conducted over ten years. Of these, 370 inseminations occurred during the flood season (January to May), 700 during the intermediate season (June to September), and 710 during the ebb season (October to January). The e

WRO-water: A hydrology-guided multi-head attention transformer for runoff prediction and water quality early warning.

Predicting runoff and providing water quality early warnings becomes critical for timely monitoring of water resources. In particular, it needs to be robust under varying rainfall conditions, sensor noise and catchment conditions. We propose WRO-Water system, a hydrology-guided multi-head attention Transformer with mass-balance regularization for runoff forecasting, water quality prediction and anomaly-based early warning. The hydrology-guided attention is different from the default Transformer, which only uses content-based self-attention, by making the temporal attention scores dependent on

Hydrology and density feedbacks control the ecology of intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis across habitats in seasonal climates.

We report about field and theoretical studies on the ecology of the aquatic snails (Bulinus spp. and Biomphalaria pfeifferi) that serve as obligate intermediate hosts in the complex life cycle of the parasites causing human schistosomiasis. Snail abundance fosters disease transmission, and thus the dynamics of snail populations are critically important for schistosomiasis modeling and control. Here, we single out hydrological drivers and density dependence (or lack of it) of ecological growth rates of local snail populations by contrasting novel ecological and environmental data with various m

From thaw till fall: Interacting hydrology, carbon cycle, and greenhouse gas dynamics in a subarctic stream-lake continuum.

Carbon-water interaction studies between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are especially needed today in Arctic and Boreal regions, as they are facing drastic warming and precipitation shifts. Despite the importance of streams in the carbon cycle, northern stream-based studies are scarce, owing to a lack of measurements throughout the north, and possibly skewing global greenhouse gas estimates. We used a combination of multiscale measurements to quantify water sources (H2O isotope proxies), carbon availability (dissolved in/organic carbon concentrations) and quality (water absorbance, SUVA25

Study on the effects of hydrological connectivity on the dispersal and driving factors of macroinvertebrate communities.

Dispersal is crucial for the distribution of macroinvertebrate populations and communities. However, research on the dispersal of macroinvertebrates after dam demolition remains limited. Studying the impact processes and driving factors of dam demolition on the dispersal capacity of macroinvertebrate communities can help in the development of effective strategies for river ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation. Therefore, this study conducted continuous monthly surveys, monitoring drifting macroinvertebrates in the Jiuchong River of Shennongjia National Park from 2022 and 2023 (b

Determining hydrological flow paths to enhance restoration in impaired mangrove wetlands.

The restoration of mangroves has gained prominence in recent decades. Hydrological rehabilitation has been undertaken to connect impaired mangroves with the sea, lagoons or estuaries. Because mangrove hydrodynamics occurs on the surface and interstitial spaces in the sediment, we propose to determine the hydrological flow paths to restore the hydrological regimes of the impaired mangroves. The hydrological flow paths were determined through a micro basin analysis based on microtopographic data to generate a digital elevation model. Applying this methodological approach, the hydrology of an imp

Revealing the hydrological transport and attenuation of 14 antibiotics in a low-flow stream.

The fate of antibiotics has mostly been studied in lab-scale systems. Few studies have precisely evaluated the attenuation of antibiotics in natural streams. We used Lagrangian sampling combined with a tracer test and one-dimensional transport with inflow and storage model (OTIS) to reveal the effects of dilution and self-attenuation processes, and diurnal variation of light on the degradation of 14 antibiotics in a 3.6 km low-flow stream. The results showed that the order of in-stream attenuation rates were macrolides (0.18-0.25 h-1) > tetracyclines (0.16-0.18 h-1) > fluoroquinolones (0.094-0
