Prezygapophyseal articular facet shape in the catarrhine thoracolumbar vertebral column.

Two contrasting patterns of lumbar vertebral morphology generally characterize anthropoids. "Long-backed" monkeys are distinguished from "short-backed" apes [Benton: The baboon in medical research, Vol. 2 (1967:201)] with respect to several vertebral features thought to afford greater spinal flexibility in the former and spinal rigidity in the latter. Yet, discussions of spinal mobility are lacking important functional insight that can be gained by analysis of the zygapophyses, the spine's synovial joints responsible for allowing and resisting intervertebral movements. Here, prezygapophyseal a

ASSESSMENT OF ACUTE PHASE PROTEINS AND PROTEIN ELECTROPHORESIS IN HEALTHY GIBBONS (HYLOBATIDAE) IN MANAGED SETTINGS.

Acute phase proteins (APP) and protein electrophoresis (EPH) offer crucial insights into inflammation and overall health in various species. In this study, we validated serum amyloid A (SAA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) reagents for use with serum samples from gibbons (Hylobatidae, n = 50), spanning five species across four gibbon genera: eastern hoolock (Hoolock leuconedys), Javan (Hylobates moloch), pileated (Hylobates pileatus), siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus), and white-cheeked (Nomascus leucogenys). Preliminary reference intervals (n = 50) were calculated for SAA (1.8-48.1 mg/L), CRP (

Covariation between wrist bone morphology and maximal range of motion during ulnar deviation and supination in extant nonhuman primate taxa.

This study investigates the maximal range of motion (ROM) during wrist deviation and forearm rotation for five different primate genera and the possible correlation with the shape of the distal ulna, triquetrum and hamate. A two-block phylogenetic partial least square analysis was performed to test this covariation in a phylogenetic context, using shape coordinates and a matrix of maximal ROM data as input data. The results show that gibbons have the highest ROM for both ulnar deviation and supination, whereas Macaca exhibited the lowest ROM for supination, and Pan had the lowest ROM for ulnar

Homology of the adductor pollicis and contrahentes muscles: a study of monkey hands.

The deep palmar muscles in monkey hands were studied. The contrahentes muscles mainly arose from the capitate bone, descended palmar to the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve and the palmar metacarpophalangeal nerves, and attached to the proximal phalanges or wing tendons of the second, fourth and fifth fingers. In relation to the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve and the palmar metacarpophalangeal nerves, the contrahentes muscles are homologous with the adductor pollicis and flexor indicis radialis muscles. The contrahentes muscles occasionally gave off some accessory slips which blend

Examination of magnitudes of integration in the catarrhine vertebral column.

The evolution of novel vertebral morphologies observed in humans and other extant hominoids may be related to changes in the magnitudes and/or patterns of covariation among traits. To examine this, we tested magnitudes of integration in the vertebral column of cercopithecoids and hominoids, including humans. Three-dimensional surface scans of 14 vertebral elements from 30 Cercopithecus, 32 Chlorocebus, 39 Macaca, 45 Hylobates, 31 Pan, and 86 Homo specimens were used. A resampling method was used to generate distributions of integration coefficient of variation scores for vertebral elements ind

Morphological modularity in the anthropoid axial skeleton.

Previous research has found that hominoids have stronger modularity between limb elements than other anthropoids, suggesting that there is less constraint on morphological diversification (e.g., limb proportions) in hominoids in terms of evolutionary independence. However, degrees of modularity in the axial skeleton have not been investigated across a broad range of anthropoid taxa. Thus, it is unknown whether hominoids also have stronger modularity in the axial skeleton than other anthropoids, which has implications for the evolution of diverse torso morphologies in Miocene apes as well as th

Scapular shape of extant hominoids and the African ape/modern human last common ancestor.

Newly discovered early hominin fossil scapulae have bolstered investigations of scapular shape, which have long been used to interpret behavioral variation among primates. However, unexpected similarities between Pongo and Homo - particularly in scapular spine orientation - have raised questions about the functional utility of scapular morphology and its phylogenetic context in the hominin lineage. Not surprisingly, significant disagreement surrounds disparate morphological reconstructions of the modern human/African ape last common ancestor (LCA). Our study utilizes geometric morphometric (GM

Brief communication: Lumbar lordosis in extinct hominins: implications of the pelvic incidence.

Recently, interest has peaked regarding the posture of extinct hominins. Here, we present a new method of reconstructing lordosis angles of extinct hominin specimens based on pelvic morphology, more specifically the orientation of the sacrum in relation to the acetabulum (pelvic incidence). Two regression models based on the correlation between pelvic incidence and lordosis angle in living hominoids have been developed. The mean values of the calculated lordosis angles based on these models are 36°-45° for australopithecines, 45°-47° for Homo erectus, 27°-34° for the Neandertals and the Sima d

Additional analyses of stem catarrhine and hominoid dental morphology support Kapi ramnagarensis as a stem hylobatid.

Fossil gibbons are exceedingly rare, with much of the hylobatid fossil record and, consequently, hylobatid evolutionary history remaining unknown. Kapi ramnagarensis was described as a stem hylobatid on the basis of an isolated lower right M3 from ∼13.0-12.5 Ma deposits surrounding Ramnagar (J&K), India. This interpretation was recently challenged, with alternative hypotheses suggesting that it is instead a stem catarrhine or a strangely derived pliopithecoid that has converged on hylobatid morphology. A series of morphological features were said to distinguish Kapi from fossil and extant hylo

Predicting extinction risk of gibbons from genomes of extinct Yunnan lar gibbon.

BACKGROUND: All species of gibbons are endangered, with the Yunnan lar gibbons (Hylobates lar yunnanensis) officially declared extinct in the wild in 2022. While human activities are frequently cited as major factor, the population structure, evolutionary history, and patterns of genomic erosion of endangered or extinct species remain poorly understood. RESULTS: We obtain genomic data from museum specimens of the extinct Yunnan lar gibbon, as well as from extant gibbon populations, and conduct a comprehensive assessment of population history and the genomic consequences of recent declines. Conserved patterns and locomotor-related evolutionary constraints in the hominoid vertebral column.

The evolution of the hominoid lineage is characterized by pervasive homoplasy, notably in regions such as the vertebral column, which plays a central role in body support and locomotion. Few isolated and fewer associated vertebrae are known for most fossil hominoid taxa, but identified specimens indicate potentially high levels of convergence in terms of both form and number. Homoplasy thus complicates attempts to identify the anatomy of the last common ancestor of hominins and other taxa and stymies reconstructions of evolutionary scenarios. One way to clarify the role of homoplasy is by inve

Dual Sound Sources in Siamangs Generate Individually Rhythmic and Temporally Coordinated Vocal Emissions.

Temporal organization is crucial for efficient communication in many animal species, particularly those with complex vocal output. Singing primates structure their songs into rhythmic categories based on small-integer ratios between adjacent intervals. However, rhythmic organization usually emerges from a single sound source, and it remains unknown whether any species can produce rhythms through the coordination of multiple vocal production mechanisms. This study investigates rhythmicity in the song of siamangs (Symphalangus syndactylus). This singing primate uses two distinct vocal mechanisms

Small apes adjust rhythms to facilitate song coordination.

Song coordination is a universal characteristic of human music. Many animals also produce well-coordinated duets or choruses that resemble human music. However, the mechanism and evolution of song coordination have only recently been studied in animals. Here, we studied the mechanism of song coordination in three closely related species of wild Nomascus gibbons that live in polygynous groups. In each species, song bouts were dominated by male solo sequences (referred to hereafter as male sequence), and females contributed stereotyped great calls to coordinate with males. Considering the functi

Nuclear organization of serotonergic neurons in the brainstems of a lar gibbon and a chimpanzee.

In the current study, we detail, through the analysis of immunohistochemically stained sections, the morphology and nuclear parcellation of the serotonergic neurons present in the brainstem of a lar gibbon and a chimpanzee. In general, the neuronal morphology and nuclear organization of the serotonergic system in the brains of these two species of apes follow that observed in a range of Eutherian mammals and are specifically very similar to that observed in other species of primates. In both of the apes studied, the serotonergic nuclei could be readily divided into two distinct groups, a rostr

The prevalence of Balantidium coli infection in fifty-six mammalian species.

A total of 375 fecal samples of 56 mammalian species belonging to 17 families of 4 orders were examined for the detection of Balantidium coli from December 1994 to August 1995. As a result, B. coli was found from 6 species belonging to 4 families of 2 orders (Primates and Artiodactyla) of host animals examined. White-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar), squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciurea) and Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) were new hosts for B. coli. All the wild boar (Sus scrofa) and chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) examined were positive. The highest number of B. coli was obtained from a chimpanzee (

The reconstructed cranium of Pierolapithecus and the evolution of the great ape face.

Pierolapithecus catalaunicus (~12 million years ago, northeastern Spain) is key to understanding the mosaic nature of hominid (great ape and human) evolution. Notably, its skeleton indicates that an orthograde (upright) body plan preceded suspensory adaptations in hominid evolution. However, there is ongoing debate about this species, partly because the sole known cranium, preserving a nearly complete face, suffers from taphonomic damage. We 1) carried out a micro computerized tomography (CT) based virtual reconstruction of the Pierolapithecus cranium, 2) assessed its morphological affinities

Accelerated evolution increased craniofacial divergence between humans and great apes.

The level of craniofacial diversity of hominids (the group that includes great apes and humans) is much higher than that of their sister group, the hylobatids (also known as gibbons or lesser apes), despite the similar timeline of diversification and a similar level of genetic differentiation between the two clades. To shed light on the evolutionary dynamics shaping these varying levels of craniofacial diversity, we used three-dimensional high-density geometric morphometric approaches and phylogenetic comparative methods. We show that neurocranial diversity exceeds that expected from neutral e

The power of gibbon songs: Going beyond the research to inform conservation actions.

Gibbons (Hylobatidae) are the smallest of the apes, known for their arboreal behavior and stereotyped songs. These species and sex-specific songs are often the subject of detailed studies regarding their evolution, responses to changing environments, involvement in social behavior, and used to design vocalization-based survey techniques to monitor population densities and trends. What is poorly understood is the value and impact of using the science and sound of gibbon vocalization and gibbon stories in education and outreach to complement nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) efforts. We prese

Infarctive encephalopathy in zoo-housed gibbons in North America.

Progressive neurologic signs without a known underlying etiology have been observed in managed gibbon populations housed at institutions in North America. In 2018, the Gibbon Species Survival Plan initiated a veterinary survey to evaluate clinical histories among gibbons displaying neurologic signs. The clinical results of this survey as well as the results of a centralized histologic review of brain samples from 5 species of managed gibbons displaying neurologic signs are outlined here. Reported neurologic deficits in gibbons surveyed included tremors (12/12, 100%), ataxia/incoordination (11/

The functional morphology of the accessory interosseous muscle in the gibbon hand: determination of locomotor and manipulatory compromises.

The evidence for two functional roles of M. accessorius interosseus can be adduced as follows: (1) abduction of the whole finger is clearly required to resist the force of the thumb against the index during pinch grasp (Fig. 4) and when greater resistance is applied to the food, activity increases in the muscle. (2) The muscle also flexes the metacarpophalangeal joint at the onset of grasp on the ladder rung. In hanging from the finger tips or from the cage top, with the metacarpophalangeal joints extended, the muscle goes silent. From the functional point of view, the name given by Huxley (18
