Red biocolorant from endophytic Talaromyces minnesotensis: production, properties, and potential applications.

Fungal colorants are gradually entering the global color market, given their advantages of being less harmful to human health, as well as having greater stability and biotechnological potential, compared to other natural sources. The present work concerns the isolation and identification of an endophytic filamentous fungus, together with the chemical characterization and assessment of the fluorescence, toxicity, stability, and application potential of its synthesized red colorant. The endophytic fungus was isolated from Hymenaea courbaril, a tree from the Brazilian savannah, and was identified

Real-Time Wood Chemotyping Using a Low-Cost and Compact Mass Spectrometer.

The ongoing deforestation of critical ecosystems such as the Amazondriven largely by illegal logginghighlights the urgent need for accessible, scientifically robust tools for reliable timber identification. Traditional anatomical methods often fall short when distinguishing between morphologically similar species, while advanced analytical techniques, though accurate, are typically expensive, laboratory-bound, and impractical for massive timber trade monitoring. In this study, we report the first application of a compact, low-cost mass spectrometer for direct chemotyping of tropical hardwood

Acetylsalicylic acid biosorption onto fungal-bacterial biofilm supported on activated carbons: an investigation via batch and fixed-bed experiments.

This study reports on acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) biosorption onto fungal-bacterial biofilm supported on two types of activated carbons (one commercial type made of coconut fibers, CAC, and one other manufactured from fruit rinds of Hymenaea stigonocarpa Mart., HYAC, which after biofilm inoculation, they were named CAC-b and HYAC-b), via batch and fixed-bed experiments. These materials were characterized by BET Specific Surface Area and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM). Biosorption onto HYAC-b was 57.2% higher than HYAC. Despite presenting the highest biosorption capacity over time (qt = 85

Plant species as a therapeutic resource in areas of the savanna in the state of Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ethnobotanical studies have contributed significantly in research of plants with therapeutic potential. The aim of the present study was to learn about the use of native medicinal plants cited by the traditional population in "cerradão" (savanna woodland) areas in Northeast Brazil, providing data on therapeutic indications of the species used and their versatility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted on the basis of a standardized questionnaire designed for key informants selected using the "snowball" technique. The selection of pla

Plasticity on the spectrum: photosynthetic induction of tropical forest tree species in contrasting light conditions.

Tree species differ in their ability to use light efficiently, affecting carbon gain, establishment and survival in highly heterogeneous environments. This efficiency relies on the maintenance of the photosynthetic induction state, regulated by structural, biochemical, photochemical and stomatal processes that vary along the leaf economics spectrum (LES). Slow return species, such as shade-tolerant species (often late successional), are thought to sustain higher photosynthetic induction state, while quick return species, like light-demanding species (often early-successional) would have lower

Antileishmanial activity and cytotoxicity of Brazilian plants.

Leishmaniasis is a major public health problem, and the alarming spread of parasite resistance has increased the importance of discovering new therapeutic products. The present study aimed to investigate the in vitro leishmanicidal activity from 16 different Brazilian medicinal plants. Stationary-phase promastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis and murine macrophages were exposed to 44 plant extracts or fractions for 48 h at 37°C, in order to evaluate their antileishmanial activity and cytotoxicity, respectively. The most potent extracts against L. amazonensis were the hexanic extract of Dipteryx

Capsaicin: Current Understanding of Its Mechanisms and Therapy of Pain and Other Pre-Clinical and Clinical Uses.

In this review, we discuss the importance of capsaicin to the current understanding of neuronal modulation of pain and explore the mechanisms of capsaicin-induced pain. We will focus on the analgesic effects of capsaicin and its clinical applicability in treating pain. Furthermore, we will draw attention to the rationale for other clinical therapeutic uses and implications of capsaicin in diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, airway diseases, itch, gastric, and urological disorders.
