The case of a 31-year-old man with a neck mass of 7 months' duration is described. An X-ray examination showed a tumor originating from the right greater horn of the hyoid bone that pushed the larynx and pharynx to the left. Upon visual inspection the tumor seemed to be cartilaginous in nature. Histologically it was a well-differentiated chondrosarcoma that originated from the periphery of the hyoid bone. Ultrastructural study demonstrated an abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum, a particularly well-developed Golgi apparatus, and pleomorphic microvilli. 10 months after excision, a local recurr

Hyoid bone elongation is an uncommon cause of stroke. Here, we report a case of hyoid bone elongation causing localized trauma to the internal carotid artery, resulting in multiple strokes. A 32-year-old woman presented with unilateral weakness and history of a recent stroke. Imaging revealed the greater horn of the hyoid bone extending between the external and internal carotid with associated thrombus at the carotid bifurcation and acute stroke. Carotid ultrasound demonstrated movement of the hyoid bone in and out of the space between the external carotid artery and internal carotid artery wi

PURPOSE: Osteonecrosis of the hyoid bone is an uncommon disease that has only been described occasionally in the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report 3 cases of osteonecrosis of the hyoid bone after radiation therapy for carcinoma at various sites in the head and neck region.
RESULTS: Imaging computed tomography (CT) scans were performed for all 3 cases and did aid in the diagnosis. In 1 case, a 201thallium scintigraphy and a bone scan (99mtechnetium-diphosphonate) were performed and this confirmed the diagnosis of osteoradionecrosis.
CONCLUSION: Osteoradionecrosis of the hyoid bone

Atherosclerotic plaques concomitantly with the hyoid bone protrusion into the internal carotid artery (ICA) are rarely reported in the literature. These plaques can be considered as arising from the turbulent flow and the shear stress caused by the close contact between the hyoid bone and the arterial wall carotid artery. The carotid stenosis was greater than 70%. We report a patient with a transient ischemic attack and a right significant carotid artery stenosis presumably due to a compression of an elongated ICA by the hyoid bone. The patient was submitted to open surgery to remove the plaqu

OBJECTIVE: To understand and analyze the morphological characteristics of hyoid bone and its gender difference in order to find out its forensic significance.
METHODS: The hyoid bones of 68 adult corpses were dissected from redundant soft tissues after heating. The connection status of body of hyoid, greater cornu and lesser cornu, the morphological characteristics of hyoid bone and the degree of ossification were observed by visual inspection. The height of hyoid bone and the arched height of hyoid bone were measured and compared the differences between male and female in order to deduce the

Fractures of the hyoid bone (HB) and thyroid cartilage (TC) are important findings in emergency medicine and forensic pathology. This study aimed to determine the occurrence and anatomical localization of HB and TC fractures and to evaluate the etiological and risk factors.A total of 315 patients with HB and/or TC fractures were included over a 3-year period. Data regarding the incident type, cause of death, age, sex, body mass index, regional trauma findings, location of fractures, resuscitation, and toxicological analyses were collected. Injury severity scores were calculated using the Abbre

A 36-year-old man presented with acute cerebral infarction in the right frontal lobe associated with right internal carotid artery dissection (CAD). Enhanced computed tomography revealed right greater horn of the hyoid bone in close proximity to the right internal carotid artery (ICA). It was speculated that mechanical compression of the internal carotid artery by the hyoid bone induced by neck rotation was related to ICA dissection. Greater knowledge of the association between the hyoid bone and the CAD will lead to increased awareness and appropriate diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: We present two cases of a hyoid bone fracture identified through careful clinical examination with a Valsalva manoeuvre during nasendoscopy.
METHOD: Case reports and review of the literature, with emphasis on technique during nasendoscopy.
RESULTS: The first patient had sustained a blow to the neck with a stick, six months prior to presentation with a globus sensation. External examination and standard nasendoscopy were unremarkable. The second patient had been struck across the neck by a wire whilst riding a motorbike at low speed. Endoscopy revealed swelling of the supraglottis.

Fractures of hyoid bone resulting from trauma other than strangulation are very rare, isolated hyoid bone fractures are even rarer, and occur more frequently in young individuals, and in men more than in women. A comprehensive review of the world literature, also two rare cases of isolated hyoid bone fractures induced by direct trauma onto the anterior neck are presented. Additionally, a table summarizing 31 cases from 1954 to 2003, is included. Mechanism of injury, diagnosis, complications, prognosis, and treatment are discussed.

PURPOSE: The hyoid bone plays a key role in several physiological functions by interacting with the attached muscles. Understanding its kinematics and positional stability is essential for evaluating its functions: swallowing, mastication, intraoral transport, vocalization, and respiration. This study aimed to assess the position of the hyoid bone relative to the cranial base and mandible using cephalometric imaging and to examine its stability.
METHODS: Cephalometric images of 140 patients were analyzed using specialized software. The positional relationship between the cranial base and hyoi

OBJECTIVES: Hyoid bone tenderness is an underemphasized clinical abnormality and is described as discomfort or pain on gentle palpation of the greater cornu. The primary outcome of this study is to assess if there is any association between hyoid tenderness and laryngeal pathology.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective case-control study.
METHODS: Ninety-four subjects were identified. These were divided into two groups, those with hyoid tenderness and those without hyoid tenderness. Presenting complaints and findings on nasal laryngoscopy were compared to identify any association between hyo

We report the case of a hyoid syndrome caused by a developmental anomaly of the second branchial cleft, presenting at adult age by dysphagia without any abnormality detected at the barium swallow and at naso-pharyngeal endoscopy, first examinations to perform in case of dysphagia. The MRI findings of this anomaly showed a hyperintense well-limited vallecular mass syndrome. The diagnosis of hyoid bone anomaly was established at spiral CT with 3D reconstructions showing an incurvated and elongated lesser cornua causing persistant impingement on the lateral wall of the oropharynx. Superior laryngeal neuralgia is a rare condition. We report a case of superior laryngeal neuralgia with deviated hyoid bone. A 50-year-old woman presented with paroxysmal and lancing pain localized to the area around the thyrohyoid membrane. Pain was induced and worsened by swallowing. A three-dimensional image showed deviation of the hyoid bone. General and neurological examinations were normal. After spraying of the larynx with 4% lidocaine, the pain improved. Superior laryngeal neuralgia was diagnosed, and the condition was treated with carbamazepine. Superior laryngeal neuralgia is rare bu

In 1981 Bibby and Preston commented on the uniqueness of the anatomic relationships of the hyoid bone, notably that it was not fixed in space by bony articulations. This fact alone makes it a potential indicator of certain individual features of importance in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment. This study investigates the effect of mouth breathing and tongue-thrusting on the hyoid bone position by means of the hyoid triangle analysis. Three groups of eighteen subjects formed the sample, one group of mouth breathers, one group of tongue-thrusters, and a control group of subjects who exhibited

Eagle syndrome is a well-known disease caused by elongation of the styloid process and/or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament, which interferes with adjacent anatomical structures, giving rise to acute cerebrovascular syndrome(ACVS)and/or pain. Although hyoid bone is also a stylohyoid complex, its association with ACVS is not well known. Thus, we investigated the anatomical relationship between the internal carotid artery(ICA)and the hyoid bone. Between January 2014 and December 2015, three-dimensional computed tomographic angiography(3D-CTA)of the neck was performed for 218 patients. Of

BACKGROUND: The ventral enclosure of the thyroid cartilage by a collapsed hyoid bone (CHB) is poorly encountered in previous research. It was aimed to observe whether or not these malformations could be found and detailed anatomically in a consistent lot of computed tomography (CT) files.
METHODS: Two hundred archived CT angiograms were explicitly observed for the CHB anatomical variant.
RESULTS: Different possibilities of CHB were found in 6/200 cases, five males and one female. The symmetrical overlap of the thyroid cartilage by the hyoid body was found in one male case. In three cases, tw
