Association Between Ocular Dominance and Anisometropic Hyperopia.

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: Anisometropia, a relative difference in the refractive state of the two eyes, is common in hyperopic patients. We investigated the association between ocular dominance (sighting dominance) and refractive asymmetry in patients with hyperopia. METHODS: This retrospective study included 223 hyperopic patients with a mean age of 10.1 ± 3.6 years (range 3 to 21 years). Refractive error was measured with cycloplegic refraction, and axial length was measured with IOLMaster® (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). Ocular dominance was assessed with the hole-in-the-card test. The a

Drug-induced myopia, hyperopia and accommodation disorders.

Myopia, hyperopia and accommodation disorders are common refractive disorders, usually due to anatomical abnormalities or to physiological aging. They can also be functional, however, particularly when provoked by drugs. Drug-induced refractive disorders resolve after treatment cessation. All drugs acting on the autonomic nervous system can affect vision. Other drugs have unpredictable effects: the mechanism is not always known but sometimes appears to involve changes in the hydration of various ocular structures.

Phakic intraocular lens implantation for the correction of hyperopia.

The prevalence of myopia is much higher than hyperopia. Hence, there are relatively few studies investigating phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation for the correction of hyperopia. This review aimed to summarize the available relevant literature on the efficacy and safety of pIOL implantation for the correction of hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism. At present, two types of pIOLs are used to correct hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism: anterior chamber iris-fixated pIOLs and posterior chamber implantable collamer lenses. Both have been found to be safe and effective. No serious events (

[Correction of high-degree hyperopia by multiple pseudophakia].

The present study was undertaken to create a physicomathematical model of multiple pseudophakia and to investigate its method in correcting high-degree hyperopia. On the basis of the calculation of spherical aberrations, the authors have proposed recommendations for combining intraocular lenses (IOL), as well as developed and tested the modified formula for calculating the focal power of intracapsularly implanted IOLs. They provide a rationale for the increased clearly visible space depth phenomenon observed in patients with multiple pseudophakia and have calculated the reflection light energy

Chalazion-induced hyperopia as a cause of decreased vision.

This article presents three cases of decreased vision due to acquired hyperopia, which were caused by a chalazion of the upper eyelid. Through manifest refraction and computerized corneal topographic analysis, acquired hyperopia associated with central corneal flattening was revealed. These findings were responsible for the blurred vision that was reversed by chalazion resolution or removal. Although not usually considered a risk factor for refractive disorders other than astigmatism, chalazia of the upper eyelid can present as a decrease in vision associated with reversible central corneal fl

Hyperopia and neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration.

PURPOSE: Refractive errors for phakic eyes of patients referred with age-related macular degeneration were reviewed to determine whether some range of refractive error might be a risk factor for the neovascular form. METHODS: The authors compared refractive errors of 198 patients with unilateral neovascular disease with refractive errors of 129 patients with bilateral dry disease. These groups had comparable distributions with respect to age, sex, and visual acuity of their better eyes. Student's t tests and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to assess group differences in mea

A pedigree of cervical stenosis, brachydactyly, syndactyly, and hyperopia.

Cervical myelopathy due to developmental cervical canal stenosis occurred in a 13-year-old boy. The patient's father and aunt also had an abnormally small cervical canal, although both were asymptomatic. The patient and his family had many congenital anomalies including hereditary brachydactyly, syndactyly, and hyperopia. The association of these anomalies seems not to have been previously reported in the literature.
