Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis: rheumatologic, radiologic, and dermatologic characteristics.

Two recently observed patients with sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis exemplify the characteristic presentation of this rheumatologic disorder. We describe its manifestations, review the literature on this subject, and discuss clinical and radiologic aspects, including the frequently associated dermatologic disorder palmoplantar pustulosis. Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is an increasingly common diagnosis, and practicing physicians should be aware of the distinctive features that allow accurate differentiation from psoriatic arthritis and other diseases.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis. A case report and review of the literature.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) or intersternocostoclavicular ossification is a recently recognized disorder of unknown origin. SCCH is characterized by painful, condensing hypertrophy of the sternum, both clavicles, and the upper ribs. Since its original description by Sonozaki in 1974, approximately 40 cases have been reported, mainly in the Japanese literature. This peculiar hyperostotic syndrome is often misdiagnosed. The differentiation from osteitis deformans can be difficult. Clinically, the disease produces a swelling in the upper chest area with persistent, pulling pain exac

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis: a review and report of 11 cases.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is a benign ossifying diathesis of unknown etiology characterized by hyperostosis and soft-tissue ossification between the clavicles, anterior portion of the upper ribs, and manubrium, with variable hyperostosis or ankylosis in the spine and sacroiliac joints. Our cumulative experience with 11 cases is reported, with emphasis on radiographic features of the condition. Scintigraphic results in five patients and computed tomographic findings in one patient are presented. A review of the literature and our own material indicates that sternocostoclavicular hypero

Bone imaging of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis in palmoplantar pustulosis.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is a rare syndrome that is characterized by hyperostosis and soft tissue ossification between the clavicles and the anterior part of the upper ribs. This syndrome frequently is found in the case of palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP), especially in Japan. There have been few published reports, however, of Tc-99m MDP bone imaging findings in PPP. Eleven patients with PPP who were suspected to have sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis were studied with Tc-99m MDP whole body bone imaging. Bone images were abnormal in 11 patients. Abnormal radionuclide concentrations wer

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis: two cases with differing dermatologic syndromes.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is a rare rheumatic condition characterized by ossification and erosion of the clavicle and the first rib, that has been shown to be associated with pustular skin lesions. We present 2 cases, one of which had features of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris and the other dissecting cellulitis of the scalp. Although the dermatologic manifestations differ, both cases have rheumatologic and roentgenographic features diagnostic of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis.

Sternocostoclavicular Hyperostosis: Positive Clinical and Radiological Response on Pamidronate.

BACKGROUND: Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) is a rare disease, constituting a chronic sterile osteomyelitis with elevated bone turnover in the axial skeleton, causing pain and shoulder dysfunction. SCCH severely interferes with daily activities, work, and quality of life. SCCH has a relapse-remitting disease course, but inflammatory-induced sclerotic transformation in the affected area is slowly progressive. Here we present two patients with clinical and radiological diagnosis of SCCH treated with intravenous pamidronate, leading to clinical remission in both, but complete resolution

[Tumor-like bone lesions in sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis and palmoplantaris pustulosis].

We present two unusual cases of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) in conjunction with palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) and additional tumour like manifestations in a scapula and a femur respectively. The association of SCCH with complexes of signs and symptoms such as chronic multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO), or other nosological entities such as seronegative spondylarthropathies, is discussed.

The bullhead sign: scintigraphic pattern of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis and pustulotic arthroosteitis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the value of whole-body nuclear medicine imaging and to evaluate the typical scintigraphic pattern of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) and/or pustulotic arthroosteitis (PAO). In this entity the correct diagnosis is frequently missed because of uncharacteristic changes in other imaging modalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-nine patients (age range 15-65 years old, mean age 36 years) with sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) and/or pustulotic arthroosteitis (PAO) were examined with whole-body scintigraphy and con

[Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis: a space-occupying lesion of the superior thoracic aperture].

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is a rare disease characterized by soft-tissue ossifications and hyperostosis of the clavicles, anterior segments of the upper ribs and sternum. These changes may imitate other disorders and thus may be misinterpreted. We present the radiologic appearances of this entity and discuss the diagnostic value of computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and scintigraphy.

[Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting complicated with sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis;Report of a Case].

The patient was 72-year-old man, who had old myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was complicated with congestive heart failure, and multi-vessel coronary artery disease and moderate aortic valve stenosis and regurgitation were diagnosed. We performed coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG) and aortic valve replacement. Intraoperative findings showed severe adhesions and tissue fibrosis around sternum. It was very difficult to dissect adhesions around left internal thoracic artery (LITA). LITA was injured, and great sa

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis: its progression and radiological features. A study of 12 cases.

Twelve cases of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis were followed up over four to 16 years. The patients underwent repeated radiological examinations of the sternocostoclavicular joints and the sternum, and the extrasternal osseous manifestations of the disease were studied to show changes in the radiological features during long term follow up. Five of 12 (41%) patients had extrasternal manifestations. With the exception of one patient extrasternal manifestations were first detected by scintigraphs because they were asymptomatic. With respect to the sternal manifestations the initial radiologi

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis. Radiological and pathological study of a specimen with ununited clavicular fracture.

Anatomico-radiological study of a sternocostoclavicular mass taken post-mortem from a man whose clinical history had shown bilateral sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) with plantar pustulosis for 27 years. The clavicle showed an ununited fracture attributable to a trauma sustained five years earlier. Both clavicular segments showed active remodelling with intraosseous granulation tissue and periosteal metaplastic ossification. The sternocostoclavicular region was fused in a bony block in which there were no signs of remodelling activity. The first rib and the distal extremity of the cla

Stress fracture of the midshaft clavicle associated with sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis-Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Stress fracture is generally a result of cumulative and repetitive stress in athletes, which accelerates the normal remodeling process of bones, and the most frequently involved areas are the tibia and metatarsal bones. Therefore, stress fractures of the midshaft of the clavicle are very rare. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 58-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of pain in the middle of the right clavicle. Based on laboratory and radiographic inspection, it was concluded that the stress fracture of the midshaft of the clavicle in this case was caused by sternocostoclav

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis. A report of nineteen cases, with special reference to etiology and treatment.

The cases of nineteen patients with sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis were reviewed retrospectively. Of particular interest were the responses to antibiotics and prostaglandin inhibitors. The prostaglandin inhibitors relieved the pain within three to four weeks in sixteen of eighteen patients so treated. However, the inhibitors gradually became less effective in most patients. Oral antibiotics were more effective than the inhibitors in relieving the pain of eight of the eleven patients who were given antibiotics. Pustulosis palmaris and plantaris, commonly associated with sternocostoclavicula
