Tongue tumor detection in medical hyperspectral images.

A hyperspectral imaging system to measure and analyze the reflectance spectra of the human tongue with high spatial resolution is proposed for tongue tumor detection. To achieve fast and accurate performance for detecting tongue tumors, reflectance data were collected using spectral acousto-optic tunable filters and a spectral adapter, and sparse representation was used for the data analysis algorithm. Based on the tumor image database, a recognition rate of 96.5% was achieved. The experimental results show that hyperspectral imaging for tongue tumor diagnosis, together with the spectroscopic

Acne Detection Based on Reconstructed Hyperspectral Images.

Acne Vulgaris is a common type of skin disease that affects more than 85% of teenagers and frequently continues even in adulthood. While it is not a dangerous skin disease, it can significantly impact the quality of life. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), which captures a wide spectrum of light, has emerged as a tool for the detection and diagnosis of various skin conditions. However, due to the high cost of specialised HS cameras, it is limited in its use in clinical settings. In this research, a novel acne detection system that will utilise reconstructed hyperspectral (HS) images from RGB images

Compact Snapshot Hyperspectral Imaging With Neural Dispersion-Engineered Metalens.

There is a growing demand for ultra-compact, low-cost, and high-fidelity snapshot hyperspectral imaging devices across various fields. However, conventional systems struggle to fulfill all these evolving requirements. Although a single diffractive optical element offers a compact solution, its degrees of freedom in light phase modulation are limited. Here, we exploit wavelength-dependent characteristics of the point spread function (PSF) to design a dispersion-engineered metalens that serves as a key element for hyperspectral imaging. The PSF of the metalens is tailored to undergo an extra lat

AI-Assisted Hyperspectral Interferometry and Single-Cell Dispersion Imaging.

Interferometry techniques are essential for extracting phase information from optical systems enabling precise measurements of dispersion and highly sensitive detection of perturbations. While phase sensing offers enhanced sensitivity compared to conventional spectroscopy methods, this sensitivity often makes systems more vulnerable to external factors such as vibrations, introducing instability and noise. In this work, we demonstrate a broadband and AI-enhanced interferometry method, denoted general polarization common-path interferometry (GPCPI) that relaxes the polarization constraints of t

Hyperspectral imaging for objective microcirculatory assessment in trauma patients.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a non-invasive technology capable of assessing microcirculatory impairment. This study evaluated whether HSI can detect early microcirculatory alterations in trauma patients and differentiate between those with hemodynamic instability or stability during initial trauma resuscitation. In this prospective single-center observational study at a German level I trauma center (01/2023-10/2024), patients underwent HSI (TIVITA® 2.0) at three time points: during the primary survey, after resuscitation room care, and 24 h after admission. HSI approximates four microcircula

Hyperspectral Imaging for Identifying Foreign Objects on Pork Belly.

Ensuring food safety and quality is critical in the food-processing industry, where the detection of contaminants remains a persistent challenge. This study assesses the feasibility of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for detecting foreign objects on pork belly meat. A Specim FX17 hyperspectral camera was used to capture data across various bands in the near-infrared spectrum (900-1700 nm), enabling identification of contaminants that are often missed by traditional visual inspection methods. The proposed solution combines a segmentation approach based on a lightweight Vision Transformer with speci

Pixelwise immersion factor calibration for underwater hyperspectral imaging instruments.

In situ spectral reflectance initially captured at high spatial resolution with underwater hyperspectral imaging (UHI) is effective for classification and quantification in oceanic biogeochemical studies; however, the measured spectral radiance is rarely used as an absolute quantity due to challenges in calibration of UHI instruments. In this paper, a commercial UHI instrument was calibrated for radiometric flat field response and pixelwise immersion effect to support in situ measurement of absolute spectral radiance. The radiometric and immersion factor calibrations of the UHI instrument were

Hyperspectral Imaging for Non-invasive Diagnostics of Melanocytic Lesions.

Malignant melanoma poses a clinical diagnostic problem, since a large number of benign lesions are excised to find a single melanoma. This study assessed the accuracy of a novel non-invasive diagnostic technology, hyperspectral imaging, for melanoma detection. Lesions were imaged prior to excision and histopathological analysis. A deep neural network algorithm was trained twice to distinguish between histopathologically verified malignant and benign melanocytic lesions and to classify the separate subgroups. Furthermore, 2 different approaches were used: a majority vote classification and a pi

Hyperspectral imaging fluorescence excitation scanning for colon cancer detection.

Optical spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging have shown the potential to discriminate between cancerous and noncancerous tissue with high sensitivity and specificity. However, to date, these techniques have not been effectively translated to real-time endoscope platforms. Hyperspectral imaging of the fluorescence excitation spectrum represents new technology that may be well suited for endoscopic implementation. However, the feasibility of detecting differences between normal and cancerous mucosa using fluorescence excitation-scanning hyperspectral imaging has not been evaluated. The goal of

Hyperspectral Imaging for Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma Differentiation.

This study proposed an intelligent intraoperative diagnostic framework that combines hyperspectral imaging (HSI) with deep reinforcement learning to accurately differentiate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), the two main subtypes of primary liver cancer. To address the limitations of conventional imaging techniques and serum biomarkers, the authors constructed the first clinical HSI dataset of liver tumors (n = 131, spectral range 400-1000 nm). The proposed method integrates a 3D residual neural network (3D-ResNet) with a Proximal Policy Optimization (PP

Unveiling Thymoma Typing Through Hyperspectral Imaging and Deep Learning.

Thymoma, a rare tumor from thymic epithelial cells, presents diagnostic challenges because of the subjective nature of traditional methods, leading to high false-negative rates and long diagnosis times. This study introduces a thymoma classification technique that integrates hyperspectral imaging with deep learning. We initially capture pathological slice images of thymoma using a hyperspectral camera and delineate regions of interest to extract spectral data. This data undergoes reflectance calibration and noise reduction. Subsequently, we transform the spectral data into two-dimensional imag

Snapshot hyperspectral light field imaging using image mapping spectrometry.

In this Letter, we present a snapshot hyperspectral light field imaging system using a single camera. By integrating an unfocused light field camera with a snapshot hyperspectral imager, the image mapping spectrometer, we captured a five-dimensional (5D) ($x,y,u,v,\lambda $x,y,u,v,λ) ($x,y,$x,y, spatial coordinates; $u,v,$u,v, emittance angles; $\lambda ,$λ, wavelength) datacube in a single camera exposure. The corresponding volumetric image ($x,y,z$x,y,z) at each wavelength is then computed through a scale-depth space transform. We demonstrated the snapshot advantage of our system by imaging

Tongue fissure extraction and classification using hyperspectral imaging technology.

Tongue fissures, an important feature on the tongue surface, may be pathologically related to some diseases. Most existing tongue fissure extraction methods use tongue images captured by traditional charge coupled device cameras. However, these conventional methods cannot be used for an accurate analysis of the tongue surface due to limited information from the images. To solve this, a hyperspectral tongue imager is used to capture tongue images instead of a digital camera. New algorithms for automatic tongue fissure extraction and classification, based on hyperspectral images, are presented.

Image enhancement based on in vivo hyperspectral gastroscopic images: a case study.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has been recognized as a powerful tool for noninvasive disease detection in the gastrointestinal field. However, most of the studies on HSI in this field have involved ex vivo biopsies or resected tissues. We proposed an image enhancement method based on in vivo hyperspectral gastroscopic images. First, we developed a flexible gastroscopy system capable of obtaining in vivo hyperspectral images of different types of stomach disease mucosa. Then, depending on a specific object, an appropriate band selection algorithm based on dependence of information was employed to

Classification of hyperspectral medical tongue images for tongue diagnosis.

Human tongue is one of the important organs of the body, which carries abound of information of the health status. The images of the human tongue that are used in computerized tongue diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are all RGB color images captured with color CCD cameras currently. However, this conversional method impedes the accurate analysis on the subjects of tongue surface because of the influence of illumination and tongue pose. To address this problem, this paper presents a novel approach to analyze the tongue surface information based on hyperspectral medical tongue ima

The utility of hyperspectral imaging in patients with chronic venous disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The underlying pathophysiology of lower limb changes in chronic venous disorders (CVD) may involve alteration in microcirculation and tissue oxygenation. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a noninvasive tool that is used clinically to measure transcutaneous oxygenation in peripheral artery disease and diabetic foot disease. However, there has been little application in venous disease. The aim of this study was to determine if transcutaneous oxygenation in the lower limb, as measured by HSI, changes depending on the clinical component of the Clinical-Etiological-Anatomical-Pathophysiolog

Hyperspectral Ophthalmoscope Images for the Diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy Stage.

A methodology that applies hyperspectral imaging (HSI) on ophthalmoscope images to identify diabetic retinopathy (DR) stage is demonstrated. First, an algorithm for HSI image analysis is applied to the average reflectance spectra of simulated arteries and veins in ophthalmoscope images. Second, the average simulated spectra are categorized by using a principal component analysis (PCA) score plot. Third, Beer-Lambert law is applied to calculate vessel oxygen saturation in the ophthalmoscope images, and oxygenation maps are obtained. The average reflectance spectra and PCA results indicate that

Hyperspectral imaging as a novel diagnostic tool in microcirculation of wounds.

UNLABELLED: Monitoring of perfusion is a cornerstone in surgery, phlebology and basic science to proof wound healing by interventions. In chronic wound management it is of utmost importance to realize and parametrize wound bed perfusion to verify actual, and plan further treatment by noninvasive diagnostics. Up to now monitoring is based on visual inspection of wounds as conventionally practiced over more than decades. The main problems of visual inspection are the lack of standardization and comparability because of interindividual variations. Therefore technical performance with contact free
