Grip forces exerted against stationary held objects during gravity changes.

In the present study, grip forces exerted against a stationary held object were recorded during parabolic flights. Such flight maneuvers induce changes of gravity with two periods of hypergravity, associated with a doubling of normal terrestrial gravity, and a 20 s period of microgravity. Accordingly, the object's weight changed from being twice as heavy as normally experienced and weightless. Grip-force recordings demonstrated that force control was seriously disturbed only during the first experience of hyper- and microgravity, with the grip forces being exceedingly high and yielding irregul

Effects of simulated reduced gravity and walking speed on ankle, knee, and hip quasi-stiffness in overground walking.

Quasi-stiffness characterizes the dynamics of a joint in specific sections of stance-phase and is used in the design of wearable devices to assist walking. We sought to investigate the effect of simulated reduced gravity and walking speed on quasi-stiffness of the hip, knee, and ankle in overground walking. 12 participants walked at 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 m/s in 1, 0.76, 0.54, and 0.31 gravity. We defined 11 delimiting points in stance phase (4 each for the ankle and hip, 3 for the knee) and calculated the quasi-stiffness for 4 phases for both the hip and ankle, and 2 phases for the knee. Chronic Polyhydramnios: A Medical Entity Which Could Be a Model of Muscle Development in Decreased Mechanical Loading Condition.

Polyhydramnios is a condition related to an excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid in the third trimester of pregnancy and it can be acute and chronic depending on the duration. Published data suggest that during muscle development, in the stage of late histochemical differentiation decreased mechanical loading cause decreased expression of myosin heavy chain (MHC) type 1 leading to slow-to-fast transition. In the case of chronic polyhydramnios, histochemical muscle differentiation could be affected as a consequence of permanent decreased physical loading. Most affected would be muscles whic

[Effect of vibrostimulation on support zones of rat's feet, and support loading on titin N2A-isoform and T2-fragment in m. soleus under the conditions of simulated microgravity].

Effects of daily 3-hr vibrostimulation of foot support zone and 3 hrs. of usual locomotion on titin N2A-isoform and proteolytic T2-fragment were studied in m. soleus of rats during 7-d suspension. Besides, effects of single one-hour support loading following 7-d weight-deprivation on titin N2A- and T2-forms were also evaluated in the muscle. Relative N2A content in m. soleus of the suspended group was noted to reduce approximately 25% as compared with the group of control. In the meantime, relative T2 content grew 2-3 times. Along with other changes in the muscle apparatus, N2A reduction contr

A Technique of Forced Expiratory Noise Time Evaluation Provides Distinguishing Human Pulmonary Ventilation Dynamics During Long-Term Head-Down and Head-Up Tilt Bed Rest Tests Simulating Micro and Lunar Gravity.

Estimating the effect of microgravity/hypogravity on pulmonary ventilation function remains topical. Recently developed acoustic techniques based on the evaluation of the forced expiratory noise time (FETa) were hypothesized to be a promising tool for this aim. The aim of the protocol is to study the effect of two different modalities of bed rest space simulations (microgravity and lunar gravity) on FETa and spirometric indices. The FETa in the frequency band of 200-2000 Hz, recorded above human trachea, was evaluated. The 21st-day exposure to 6 degree head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest, simulating

An in-depth look at shallow-water walking: the mechanical determinants of the energy metabolic cost of shallow water walking in humans.

Human locomotion in water involves unique forces (buoyancy, drag) influencing metabolic cost. However, a validated model integrating these forces to predict the cost of transport (COT) during shallow water walking (SWW) is lacking, and energetic optimization strategies remain unclear compared to terrestrial gaits. We measured the COT in nine healthy men during SWW across four immersion depths (knee to xiphoid) and four walking speeds (0.2-0.8 m/s). We developed and validated a physiomechanical model based on the mechanical work done against buoyancy-affected body weight and hydrodynamic drag.

Bone height measurements around a dental implant after a 6-month space flight: a case report.

PURPOSE: In space, astronauts are subject to microgravity, which reduces skeletal loading and osteoblast function and can cause bone resorption and a decrease in bone density. No known research to date has studied the effect of microgravity on dental implants. This study evaluated peri-implant bone changes around a dental implant placed in a French astronaut who spent 6 months in Russia's Mir Space Station. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Measurements were performed by 2 examiners before the flight (baseline), after the flight (stage 1), and following a recovery period (stage 2). Standardized periapic

In vitro cultured cells as probes for space radiation effects on biological systems.

Near future scenarios of long-term and far-reaching manned space missions, require more extensive knowledge of all possible biological consequences of space radiation, particularly in humans, on both a long-term and a short-term basis. In vitro cultured cells have significantly contributed to the tremendous advancement of biomedical research. It is therefore to be expected that simple biological systems such as cultured cells, will contribute to space biomedical sciences. Space represents a novel environment, to which life has not been previously exposed. Both microgravity and space radiation

Homo sapiens-A Species Not Designed for Space Flight: Health Risks in Low Earth Orbit and Beyond, Including Potential Risks When Traveling beyond the Geomagnetic Field of Earth.

Homo sapiens and their predecessors evolved in the context of the boundary conditions of Earth, including a 1 g gravity and a geomagnetic field (GMF). These variables, plus others, led to complex organisms that evolved under a defined set of conditions and define how humans will respond to space flight, a circumstance that could not have been anticipated by evolution. Over the past ~60 years, space flight and living in low Earth orbit (LEO) have revealed that astronauts are impacted to varying degrees by such new environments. In addition, it has been noted that astronauts are quite heterogene

Parabolic flight reveals independent binocular control of otolith-induced eye torsion.

To examine otolith-governed ocular torsion in hyper- and hypogravity, eight subjects, including two astronauts, underwent parabolic flight while seated upright with head fixed. A mask fitted with two video cameras provided synchronized images of both eyes at a rate of 25/sec during 15 parabolas, the individual parabolas separated by a few minutes of level 1 G flight. Three main findings emerged: 1) After the first parabola, most subjects showed differential torsional offset of the two eyes in the 1 G portions between parabolas, compared to the conjugate baseline position of the eyes prior to t

PlanHab: the combined and separate effects of 16 days of bed rest and normobaric hypoxic confinement on circulating lipids and indices of insulin sensitivity in healthy men.

PlanHab is a planetary habitat simulation study. The atmosphere within future space habitats is anticipated to have reduced Po2, but information is scarce as to how physiological systems may respond to combined exposure to moderate hypoxia and reduced gravity. This study investigated, using a randomized-crossover design, how insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, and circulating lipids were affected by 16 days of horizontal bed rest in normobaric normoxia [NBR: FiO2 = 0.209; PiO2 = 133.1 (0.3) mmHg], horizontal bed rest in normobaric hypoxia [HBR: FiO2 = 0.141 (0.004); PiO2 = 90.0 (0.4) mmHg]

The effects of a change in gravity on the dynamics of prehension.

Investigating cyclic vertical arm movements with an instrumented hand-held load in an airplane undergoing parabolic flight profiles allowed us to determine how humans modulate their grip force when the gravitational and the inertial components of the load force are varied independently. Eight subjects participated in this study; four had already experienced parabolic flights and four had not. The subjects were asked to move the load up and down continuously at three different gravitational conditions (1 g, 1.8 g, and 0 g). At 1 g, the grip force precisely anticipated the fluctuations in the lo

Visually-induced reorientation illusions as a function of age.

We reported previously that supine subjects inside a furnished room who are tilted 90 degrees may experience themselves and the room as upright to gravity. We call this the levitation illusion because it creates sensations similar to those experienced in weightlessness. It is an example of a larger class of novel static reorientation illusions that we have explored. Stationary subjects inside a furnished room rotating about a horizontal axis experience complete self rotation about the roll or pitch axis. We call this a dynamic reorientation illusion. We have determined the incidence of static

Promethazine Effects on Motion Sickness During Altered Gravity Induced by Parabolic Flight.

INTRODUCTION: Astronauts commonly experience space motion sickness, which can impair astronaut performance and safety. Pharmaceuticals are frequently used to reduce space motion sickness symptoms but have not been extensively studied in partial gravity. In this research effort, we investigated the impact of oral promethazine on motion sickness during parabolic flight. METHODS: We collected motion sickness scores from 12 subjects (6 women) during parabolic flight. Each subject participated in two flights-one 0-G flight and one partial g flight-experiencing 10 parabolas at 0 g, 0.25 g, 0.50 g,
